Car rental help....

I've rented quite a bit-so I'm surprised I have some questions still... I'm looking for a rental in late Sept/early Oct- p/u in Phoenix airport,drop off at LAX.....I thought now I would just start looking....both places I've looked at so far say 'sold out'....what? what am I doing wrong? I'm used to Orlando.... is it b/c of the differing p/u drop off places? the length of use? any companies out there that don't mind these things? TIA.......

...and.... I did find a couple of rentals, I guess they're called a one way..... the prices are HIGH. Any good ideas for getting them lower? should I book now and hope I find a deal later? ...and...what kind of cancel policy does Thrifty car rental have? I'd hate to be stuck if rates got lower,etc. I am feeling desperate,even though I have months to go before our trip! it's really too far to walk.....
Thrifty looks about the best right now, as there aren't many codes this far out
