Capt. Jack's Wenches (&swabbies) lose the weight for 8/08 Getting our Magic back!

For a little extra motivation I signed up for the National Body Challenge from Discovery Health.

You get a free 8 week pass for Bally's Fitness,

Awwww I signed up to :thumbsup2

(but Shhh it's just to hang out for a few weeks with my old Bally's friends for free. They do Spinning and Powerflex classes.)

I'm still going to my new gym (Fitness First) pretty much every day though.

Kinda have a set-back at the moment in that my wrist has been seriously bothering me. Tylenol isn't even much help. I have to ease up on the weights a little and no pushups or dips.

I did call and get an appt with a specialist finally. I need to get past this and back to mobility.

Now i know my downfall lately is all the junk around....

I USED to put either a chicken breast or salmon on the George Forman while I was making my breakfast and steam some veggies. Will really need to get back on track. We really don't eat fried foods very much so that isn't the issue. Let's hope for a healthy New Year.
I have a few sites with healthy menus. If anyone is interested.

More often than not, I end up with a Smart Ones or Lean Cuisine because I am lazy!

When I am motivated...I like to saute some veggies on Sunday night & put several portions in small containers. Then I pack the veggies with a low-fat tortilla, and some carrots & fat free ranch and maybe some fruit for lunch.

I like eggplant, red & green peppers, red onions sauteed together. I can add garlic, oregano, and fat free caesar dressing for Italian, or a few tablespoons of enchilada sauce for Mexican, or teryaki sauce for Chinese - heat up at work, roll in a tortilla (with lettuce if I have it) & that's lunch.

I also always have a can of low-cal, low fat soup in my desk (so I have something healthy to eat if I forget my lunch) & both sweet and salty 100 calorie packs to stop me from running downstairs for junk food.

Thanks for the great lunch ideas:thumbsup2

Arlene I'm interested in those healthy menu sites:goodvibes

My best time for exercise is in the morning, so I probably won't have time to make lunch in the morning as well. I'm hoping making it the night before will work. Maybe if I put a big note on my fridge I'll remember:rolleyes:
I have been keeping to the walking program that my doctor recommended so far. I want to work up to something more fun/strenuous:upsidedow

ok,

So far so good this year....

Woke up...got up in time to go to a 9:30 Kickbox class and then walked for 30 minutes on the treadmill.

Came home and having two eggs w/ one slice cheese and bacon for breakfest. (24 gms of protein)

I think for me it has to be simpler or I won't be successful. So for me it's just - "Eat closer to the earth." I started doing that several months back, and on a whim stepped on the scale - 7 pounds gone! And I wasn't even trying to loose weight.

Well, why stop a good thing? I'll just keep doing it. Do I eat the "bad stuff" - sure. I'll get the occassional hamburger - but I'll try for a salad instead of the fries. Not 'cause they're healthier, but becasue they're closer to the earth.

Chips? OK. But I get the organic, multi-grain, with seeds and flax. They have way more flavor - and since they are a denser (less processing and more fiber) chip I don't eat as many of them.

Dunno - just seems to work. And is simple enough for my little mind to manage it. :goodvibes

SO if i drop a piece of cake on the floor (as long as the floor is clean) I'm good to eat it down there then? :rolleyes1

No, you have to drop it outside (as long as the dirt is clean).

Sounds like you stumbled onto a good plan Esteri. I know I eat way to many processed food, I just can't stop. OK, well I could, I guess I just don't want to.

Dirt is good for you - be sure to let your kids play in it. Strengthens the immune system, and reduces liklihood of allergies and asthma. (Really, a bunch of medical studies prove it.)

Which is a long winded way of saying - eat all the dirty cake you want!! :rotfl2:

You know eating closer to the earth isn't all that hard. Or maybe it's not all that hard cause I live in CA - you guys will have to tell me.

Visit the farmers market instead of the grocery. The fruits and veggies are picked when ripe and not processed to be kept in the gorcery store. Eat raw when you can - uncooked foods are living foods. Around here there are organic farms that have a subscription program - a box of fresh veggies show up every week. I can't believe it's a CA only thing - ask around at your local health food store.

Try raw milk - if you can find a dairy. There's one here in CA that will ship - if you want to give it a try and need a source. Raw milk tastes better, and is better for you. Our pediatrician recommended it for DS10 becasue all the antibiotics he had to take as a child for ear infections negatively impacted his immune system and led to allergies. The bacteria in raw milk are the same ones we need in our own digestive systems, which also do a lot for our immune systems (allergy reduction). Did you know that if you fed a calf the milk we drink (pasturized / homoginized) it would die? There's a message there. Not to say we only have raw milk in the house - we use the regular stuff for cooking and drinking most often. It's easier to get.

On a little less of the fruits and nuts, New Age soap box :lmao: - most restaraunts (even the fast food places) will offer you a salad instead of fries. That's closer to the earth. No salad? Try lightly steamed veggies.

Having a carb attack? Look for whole grains. That's closer to the earth than processed. Even breakfast cereal is better about getting whole grains in there now.

Need a snack? Raw nuts - particularly almonds - are very good for you, tasty, and filling. Sweets? Try dried fruits. Some are sweeter than sugar, but more flavorful, and you get all the fiber. Both choices are close to the earth.

Prefer hot cereal in the morning? Get the steel cut oats - they've been processed less. Toast them in a skillet - adds a nice nutty flavor - then add milk or water and let them simmer while you shower. Doesn't take much more time than instant, tastes WAY better. No time in the morning? Put them in the slow cooker, on low, over night. And you'll be eating (all together now) closer to the earth. :thumbsup2

You know - once I got thinking about it, "eating closer to the earth" is simply a healthier way to eat - and your weight will take care of itself. And it's something I can feel good about doing all the time - don't we all want to be closer to the earth? I dunno - this approach is just less stressful for me - I'm not giving up something, I'm getting something. So it's easier for me to stick with it. Call me a Californian - but it works for me. (Even eating dirty cake! :rotfl2: )

dirty cake... I could do dirty cake.. LOL

Well count me in too..

I did work out yesterday and Tuesday but didn't today.. but it isn't over so ..

my biggest problem is portion control amd like winotracy one of my problems is work.."I work too much and don't do things I should do (exercise!). I also work at home so it's easy to get into the trap of working all the time and also very easy to get something to eat, anything, at any time. " sounds like me too.. I sit at the computer to just check in and here I am hours later.. could be why I have gotten pear shaped..

anyway, I am going to watch portions and I do like Esteri's eat closer to the earth.. I can try but the boys won't go for it at all.. any ideas??

You know. There aren't a lot of boy skeletons standing on street corners who have starved themselves to death. I think it's more a situation of getting the other stuff out of the house and replacing it with stuff that's closer to the earth. They'll eat what's available. Don't do it all at once, do it over time.

Eventually, you'll have kids who choose sushi over pizza, water over soda, and veggies over french fries (about half the time). Really, it can happen. I think it's more about developing their palate to enjoy other flavors.

DH took the boys grovery shopping one time. (He does most of the cooking.) They're standing in the produce section and the boys are getting a excited over getting greeen beans and really excited over the fact that Cuties (Clemintine tangerines) were in. :confused3 People were making comments to him about the boys enthusiasm for fruits and veggies. Do they get the junk stuff? Sure, but not very often. But when grocery shopping we just don't go down those aisles very often.

Here's a good rule of thumb. You want to eat closer to the earth? Stick the the edges of your grocery store. Not the middle. Think about it...

My kids play in the dirt. Heck, I still play in the girt sometimes!
OK, I bought whole grain crackers last night had a salad with my pizza. Friday is always pizza night.

I hate making salads! I will cook you a 7 course gourmet meal (a pretty good one ifIdosaysomyself), but you won't get a salad. I know, I'm wierd, can't explain it. I never do more than salad in a bag. AND we end up with a lot of frozen veggies because I can only make it to the grocery store every 2-3 weeks, so we have fresh veggies for a few days, then nada.

Dirt is fun. I was out playing in it today bewteen storms getting the fence demolished. but that's a story for the main thread... ;)

Salad in a bag is the best invention of the centuary IMO. I hate making salads too. Though DH and my brother seem to enjoy making them. :confused3

Do you get the frozen veggies at the commisary? We really like the VIP SteamWorks Organic veggies. The come in very handy steaming bags. And seem to tast better than other frozen veggies. But, they really only need 2 min in the microwave - not the 3min in the bag.

Anyway, frozen is closer to the earth than canned - so you're doin' good! :)

hey everyone! figured i'd better get in on this thread...hoping it will help me out! i haven't really read thru the posts yet, but i thought maybe i should jump in and say i'm onboard!
ok...now to go back and read a bit.....

Morning.. Actually the boys were better when they were little..things changed when I started working downtown ( leave at 6:15 am and don't get home until 6:15 pm) plus now they are in high scholl and they can buy junk at school.. but they do eat salad..

The worst is DH.. he is a pizza, mac and cheese, pasta with red sauce kindof guy.. when he makes dinner that is all he makes.. on the other hand I used to spend the weekend shopping and then making dinner for the week, so they could just pull it out and cook it since I don't get home until 6:15 pm. Maybe I should get back to doing that as it does ensure that they eat better then when DH makes dinner.

Othewise, I worked out Friday for 1 hour, Saturday I did stretches for a half hour and meant to get back to do some weights but never did and then had pizza.:scared1: . on Sunday I was back and worked out for an hour and did eggs for breakfast and a salad for dinner. Today i worked out this am for 40 minutes, then made lunch for the kids and started to work..I am hoping to get in a walk at lunch today..

True Confessions- my REAL problem is ICE CREAM. I am addicted to ice cream. I can give up other sweets but not ice cream. Hopefully I can start to limit portions. I usually eat from the 1/2 gallon and well that is almost a single serving to me.. taught the boys this too. Every one of us has their own carton to eat on..I do eat the light ice cream.. you will always find my on Deck 9 by the ice cream machine..

Talk to ya later..

You're off to a great start!

Cheese is my weakness! Our HR guy walks around every Friday afternoon with a big bowl of little candy bars. I'm able to pass them up, but if he ever walks by my ofice with a cheese plate, I'm in trouble!

Have you thought about going to a meal assembly place? I always find a locally-owned one so I can't recommend a particular chain, but two are Let's Dish and Super Suppers. I've been going to one for about a year now & I love it. You spend about 2 hours putting meals together in foil trays and freezer bags (it's fun!), then you thaw them out and follow the cooking instructions. You can usually get dinner on the table in 30 minutes or so. It is great now that DH gets home before I do - he can start cooking. The meals from my place range from about 4-8 Weight Watcher points for the entree (very roughly 200-400 calories), so it is WAY better than fast food or even store bought convienance food.

We have those around here too - What's for Dinner, and another I can't remember. DH was a Personal Chef for a year when DS6 was an infant (he took the baby with him to cook at client's) - so he learned all about what freezes well, and what doesn't - and how to prepare for future reheating. If going to one of the dinner places isn't your deal. There are also some very good books out on the market. Basically make 30 days worth of meals in a weekend kind of thing. We have a bunch of them - I can get the titles when I get home if anyone is interested.

And yeah - it's way better than the store bought convienance foods.

Or, look into getting a personal chef. They tend to be more cost effective if you're doing a lot of eating out.

I did the cook & freeze at home thing for about 6 months, but with our schedules it is difficult to block out most of a weekend to do it. I always thought it would be fun to get together once a month with a few friends to cook and freeze at home, you know split the prep work, share a bottle of wine...but none of my friends were interested, so I started going to the meal prep place. We actually save money each month by doing it.

DH was a chef, huh? Lucky you. My DH gets flustered following the cooking instructions on the prepared meals!

Mine's not a chef but he can follow instructions for Let's Dish Meals....

I love going there. It's a shame they raised their prices last year because a friend and i were going pretty much monthly and splitting 12 meals.

She only has 2 to feed, i have 3. Most of their meals split real well so i was able to get 12 meals myself out of one trip (well that and every other month friend and i traded off on who got the extra free meal)

I haven't been to Dish since October i think.

If you get a chance, try their tilapia...really good...

Hello Everyone! I started back at the gym on Monday. I try to do 20-30 minutes of cardio then we have a 40 min. personal training class.

My down fall is -- FOOD. I love food. Especially Ice Cream, chocolate and cheese.

Bag salad is the way to go. So easy!

Gotta go get changed and head off to the torture chamber! I hope everyone has a good week.

If the gym is torture, find something that is fun - you're more likely to stick with it.

I hate treadmills, stairmasters, etc. so I usually go to aerobics classes. Sometimes I'll hop on the eliptical machine. Tonight is pilates class, so I'll do 30 minutes of cardio before class.

Hi all:goodvibes

I picked up the "Cheat to Lose Diet" in the bookstore last week and my DH and I started it on Sunday. So far I'm down 3 pounds in 4 days. That is really good for me. The diet is somewhat complicated, but the main premise is that if you schedule in "cheat days" into your diet, that it fools your body so that it does not register that you're dieting. This way the metabolism stays high:confused3

I'm in the priming stage: 1 week low carb, 1 week low GI, 1 week high GI, then a cheat day.

Then, after the first three weeks, the core phase starts: 2 days low carb, 2 days low GI, 2 days high GI, cheat day.

Now I have to wait until Jan 26th for my first cheat day, but after that I get one a week. The recipes that we have been trying from the book are great. I'm missing my carbs quite a bit, but I keep reminding myself that I get to add some low GI carbs starting Sunday (fruit, oatmeal, beans) and pasta comes back during the high GI days. There are unlimited low starch veggies on this diet so I'm trying to force myself to eat more veggies (hard I'm not a veggie lover).

My metabolism has definitely slowed down as I've gotten older so hopefully this diet (plus walking every day) will help:confused3

I'm also sleeping better since Sunday:confused3
