Canon S3

Thanks...I noticed that the camera takes beautiful pics in daylight..I'll try what you suggested..

I love my S5 but I think I may upgrade someday to a digital Canon Rebel.

Yeah, DSLRs definitely take better pictures in anything other than really good conditions, but you have to pay for it.

I thought about going DSLR, but I just couldn't justify the $$$ to get a set of DSLR lenses that can equal the versatility of an S3 ... and, I still would have needed a separate video camera! :thumbsup2

Oh, yeah, one other suggestion for low-light with an S3/S5 ... take LOTS of shots. Sometimes you get lucky and a picture comes out better than you expect! :)

I think I'm going to get that new SX10 IS that Canon has just come out with. I love my S3, but the new one is to die for, from the reviews.

20x zoom, HD video, etc., looks good but I'm going to stick with my S5 for a while,

From what I've been reading, the one with the CMOS sensor (Powershot SX1 IS) that can do 4fps continuous shooting and HD video won't be released in North America/US as it would probably cut into their EOS Rebel sales!

Hopefully, that's just a rumor....

I recently bought an xsi but may end up returning it for this very reason. So far I have only used it around the house taking some pics and at my son's youth soccer games. At one game it was raining so I didn't use it much, the other game was when the sun was setting so it was getting dark.

I haven't been able to tell if I like it better than my super zoom camera or not (I have the panasonic fz20).

This weekend we're planning to go do some sightseeing and the thought of changing lenses to zoom isn't thrilling me, when I can do it all with my old camera. And then when do you stop buying lenses? I guess you could just buy the kit and a zoom but does one need a dslr if that is all you'll be using it?

So I'm also looking at the SX10 IS. That would be an upgrade for me from 12x to 20x zoom, 5 to 10 mp, however the fz20 has a 2.8 aperature thruout the zoom and the SX10 starts at 2.8 and goes to 5.7 real fast from what I've read.

I don't really want to carry around alot of gear, so I'm thinking of the SX10. The S5 would not really be an upgrade for me or I would go that route, unless I'm mistaken.

Our local camara guy just called and said the Canon SX10 came in today. I am going to look at one at lunch!:cool1:

Don't just leave us dangling! How was it? Did you snatch it up and refuse to put it down, or was it a disappointment?

MY DD camera lens is stuck out. It says lens error re-start camera. We have tried to turn it on and off, change batteries, conect to computer nothing will work. What do we do ?

Call Canon and ask about the Loyalty Program. For slightly more than the cost of a repair, you might be able to upgrade to a different camera such as a XT (DSLR), or G9. The cameras are refurbished, but in my experience they look brand new. (Most are customer returns, or overstocks.) They come with a 6 month warranty.

The "trade-in" camera has to be broken, but I think you definitely meet that qualification. ;)

I had an old broken Elph, and a couple of months ago I was able to use this program and get a new (refurbished) SD1000 Elph for only $100.

I just refound this thread after a year!! I have been so busy that I haven't really been playing with my camera. Well, all that is ending now!! I just retired from 20 years in the Air Force and now I am finally trying to figure out things other than Auto on this sucker!!

I have spent the last 2 days re reading this thread and taking notes and I think I understand a few more things.

My one problem is getting blurry motion pictures. I like to take pictures of the dogs running around and my DD15 jumping her horse. I've been playing with shutter speeds and aperture and I have less blurry pics.

Here are a couple from playing around yesterday in the back yard.

Michele, congrats on your "very early retirement!" 8)
Nice photos, what type of dog do you have, it looks like one of my rescues.. and we're all guessing who the mom and dad might be. I have 2 sisters and they are about 38lbs and knee high.
Enjoy rediscovering your camera!

Two different dogs, but they look alot alike! The first dog was bought as a puppy by a friend of mine and he was told that the puppy was a Full blooded Golden Retreiver. He has the body, head and tail of a Golden, but he has short little legs, so who knows??!! :confused3

The dog with the ball in her mouth is 1/2 Australian Shepard. Her mom is a full blooded Aussi, but they have no idea what the dad is. She has a sister who is much bigger/furrier and all black.

Both dogs are about 50 pounds.

DD Canon S3 broke on our last day at WDW.
We decided not to fix it. Today is her 16th B-day and on a whime we went out and bought the canon EOS Rebel XS at Best buy. She has wanted a digital SLR for a year but didn't really know much about them or what one.

Did we make a good choice? We have not opened it yet so it can still be returned as un-opened.

nice Bday present - wish someone would give me one!
that's probably a good choice if she is interested in photography but the quote "didn't really know much about them or what one"?? If she is not familiar with the term "SLR" then a "super-zoom camera may be more appropriate starting out with manual controls - easier to focus, camera has macro, zoom and video, etc.
IMHO !

she knew that she wanted a DSLR so she could change lens ( not sure who is paying for them :lmao: ) , take better pictures etc etc. It is just that we do not know anyone who has a DSLR so we went on the recomendation from the girl at Best Buy.

I like the S3 but hey who am I to give imput I'm only the one paying for it :rotfl2:

I do wonder if it is to much camera for her, but she wanted it so you know how the story goes ;)

A DSLR is often too much camera for many. If your daughter has been longing to set aperture and shutter speed herself, experiment with different ISO settings or can explain why she'd like to be able to switch lenses, then a DSLR may be for her. Otherwise, a higher end point and shoot that offers some additional manual control might be better.

Dont get me wrong , she'll be able to use the XS, but you might consider some classes for her to make sure she gets the most out of it and doesn't leave the camera in full auto mode all the time.

Since her previous camera did have manual controls, I think it was a good choice getting the XS for her. You said she had been wanting a dSLR for about a year, so she should be very excited to get it and learn with it. I myself had previously owned a Canon S5 and have recently upgraded to a Rebel XSi and abosluty love it. Because she had a S3 she should be pretty familiar with changing aperture, shutter speed and iso already. I think owning a bridge camera(like the s3/s5) makes for a pretty smooth transition into the dSLR world, as long as you had previously used the manual contols on the bridge camera.

It was a beautiful autumn weekend this weekend...

I posted these over on the "fall picture" board but thought I'd repost here.

I'm not happy with the mum shot.....there's a lot around the edges thats out of focus.

And it seemed that even on "auto", a lot of my pics were turning out grainy...these have all been run through Noiseware.

I'm still trying to figure things out, I guess!
