Canon S3

Hello again everyone. I just love this thread! It's giving me some great tips to use with my new S3. Thank you very much.:thumbsup2

Here are some photos I took last Oct. with my S2. I was playing around with my color accent mode. I just love Fall in New England. :goodvibes

Here's a picture of my new kitten Winnie taken on Auto with no flash in my house. It came out pretty good. I love this camera!

I did it!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
I know it's not a good picture at all, my kids were fighting over who had to smile this time:rolleyes:

But all I want to do was see if I could get the color effects.

woo hoo! isn't it a great feeling??! :cool1:

I am so frustrated with my S3 right now. Not the camera itself but the downloading of pictures. I installed the software in my laptop and it simply will not download my pictures. I get no Camera Window no matter what I do. And I can't download my A95 either. YEEK!

I recently bought a Canon S3 and installed the software into my laptop. Unfortunately I am not able to d/l the photos from the camera to the laptop. I follow the directions but it will not bring up the Camera Window. Help!

You should be able to look at the cameras memory card direct in Windows Explorer without needing to install the Canon software.

I noticed that Consumer Reports current issue has a big article on cameras. I'm not sure if they are really competent to compare cameras, but they might have something useful to say.

Here are couple more from our recent trip:

The castle reflected in the lake:

The Barbershop Quartet on Main Street during the Flag Retreat (I photoshopped this one to put more emphases on them):

Sleepy Tiger - don't you just want to rub his furry little belly?;)

A good usb 2.0 card reader would make life easier for you. Simply remove the memory card , insert into card reader, insert card reader into open USB slot. Card will then function as a hard drive, and can be accessed from Windows without any additional software or drivers. This will likely be much faster than downloading from the camera, and saves battery life on the camera as well.

Sorry if this is a bit elementary, but my card readers are considered essential bits of my photo kit.

OK... I have to ask..... how do you make these pictures? Is this done in the camera (if so how?) or is it done after the fact with software?

Many thanks....

This type is done in the camera. Under the SCN dial, there's a mode called "Color Accent". When you're composing your picture, you'll get a small square in the viewfinder (smaller than the focusing square) - you put this square over what color you want to keep, hit "set" and the camera turns everything black & white except for the color you selected.

Now, if you see something like THIS picture, where there's more than one color against the black & white:

This was done in Photoshop Elements. You can't do more than one color in-camera when doing Color Accent (or if you can, I don't know how to do it).

Here is the first one that I took that i think is postable. Today was the first day that I got to shoot anything. Not great but its a start. I can't wait to practice more.

I posted way back at the beginning of this thread, that I like to browse the PBase.com based upon camera used. I found this set of galleries. Click each to open for more photos. Just WOW!!!!!! http://www.pbase.com/terrythormin/africa_2007

I guess I'm just surprised (pleased) to see he/she used an S3 for an African Safari....when he/she probably has LOTS of cameras to pick from. :thumbsup2

Hi Paul! The color accent feature is a lot of fun and very easy to use. It's also very addicting! ;) I've been practicing around the yard using that feature with my flowers. I'm planning on using it a lot on our next trip. :goodvibes

Wow is right!!! Those pictures are just beautiful. Looks like the S3 is ever better than I thought. I just showed my neighbor the camera and pictures yesterday and she's planning on buying one today. :)

Add me to the list to! Does anyone have any experience with this camera in the cold?

I do!!

I took it skiing this winter, placing new batteries and getting it all ready to take on the slopes for some nice shots at the top of the mountain.

When I got up there, it wouldn't turn on. Batteries were dead.

What I learned:

1) I shouldn't have left it out in the car overnight.

2) It shuts down in severe cold - see page 150 of Owner's Manual.

3) In cold conditions I keep one set of batteries warm in my pocket and interchange them with cold batteries from camera if I need to, otherwise I will lose power.

:cold:
