Canon S3

You guys are getting a great camera at a great price!!:thumbsup2 I paid $425 for mine last May and there are many others who paid $499 when it was first released.:sad1:

Guess what gang! I FINALLY got a good shot using regular Macro! (Remember my posts a few pages back that I could only get decent shots using Super Macro and couldn't figure out regular Macro?) Here it is:

I posted these on the "general" thread, but thought I'd get your opinions, too. These are tulips in my front yard. I can't decide if I like this view or not; it's different because it doesn't have all the greenery around the blooms, but it also looks kind of stark:

Same flowers WITH greenery:

(FYI - all 3 pix are straight out of my camera, didn't even crop them.)

I paid $400 for my S2 in Feb 2006. Can't complain though. I needed a new camera and it was the best one for the best price. If you wait long enough, prices will drop, but then the new model comes out and you want that instead. It's a losing battle most of the time. Gotta just enjoy what you have and try not to think about the price you paid. Heck, in 1995 we bought a new computer for $3500 and that included the memory upgrade from 8MB to 16MB! :cool1: Now you can buy a GB for under $100 and a whole computer for $400 if you want to!

Amy,

Those are great shots! Also, very interesting looking tulips. Any idea what they are called? My DW would like them I'm sure.

I messed around in the yard a bit today too. I really wish the S2 had better shallow DOF. It is so hard to get a background to completely blur out. I had some nice macro shots that just didn't come out as I had hoped because the backgrounds are too distracting.

Andy

Woohoo!! NICE COLOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you are soooo lucky to have flowers already. ;) And NICE tulips. Those are huge.

What settings besides macro did you use?
(FYI---- I like seeing "straight out of camera" too, so we can see what the camera is capable of. Not what PHOTOSHOP is capable of. ;) )

It was a beautiful day here today, so I was also out playing around with my new S3. Overall, I think I am very happy with this camera, though it's taking a little getting used to. I really need to get some reading material and keep experimenting.

Here are my three best flower shots. If I remember correctly, they were all super macro, but I'm not positive. We are still several weeks away from tulips here! I'm still on crocuses. A few friends have daffodils blooming, but my garden doesn't get much sun, so it's a little behind.

Ok so we took our first picture taking outing with my new S3 yesterday. Here are some pics. I could not get a good one with all 3 of the kids at once...of course! But some of the individuals came out good!
Edited to add: I dont know why my head is cut off on this...it is not on the real pic?

Very nice, all! :goodvibes:

I tried some yesterday but they didn't come out too well. Will try again today.

I have reading the Canon s3 forum and looking at other peoples s3 photos, especially on FLICKR, fabulous photos, and I discovered that the s3 in infrared ready. All you need to do is get a filter, and the adapter if you haven't already. There are several places online to get the simple instructions for shooting color or b/w infrared.

Hello everyone! I'm a new proud owner of the S3! I bought it at Office Depot for that incredible price of $279.00. I've been playing around with the camera yesterday and today and I noticed something different today. This might be a silly question but I figure you all can help me. My camera is making internal noises and little beeps. Is this normal? Is it the autofocus? It just seemed very noticable to me today. I didn't notice it yesterday at all.
I own the S2 as well and I know the usual sounds. It wasn't so noticable in that camera. My Mom got my S2 now so I hope my camera is okay. Any information you could give me would be great. Thanks! :goodvibes

:thanks: everyone.

I did shoot some pics & movies today but have not loaded them to my computer yet. This is my only day off and i have 3 grandkids over. Guess who my subjects have been? :)

Andy -I believe they're called Parrot Tulips. Aren't they gorgeous?! I just wish I'd planted more of them.

Splash - I set my ISO at 200, and used Program mode, so the camera set everything else.

Maci - welcome to the S3 family!:wave2: Someone else can explain all the technical stuff, but basically with the amount of pixels in the S3, it prints out just a tad larger than 4x6. I've had to make a conscious effort to leave some space around the edge of my picture to allow for this once they're printed.

Gabby - welcome to another member of the S3 family!:wave2: I think the noise you're hearing is the autofocus - I really noticed it yesterday when I was taking my tulip shots using macro and the camera was trying to figure out what to focus on. Enjoy your new camera and be sure to post your first shots here!

NICE everyone!!!! :thumbsup2

Maci, your kids are precious. :goodvibes Really nice pictures & setting.

I've been thinking of buying the S3. Target today it was $349! Is it a special at Office Depot this week?

This is the first day that i have been able to get out & shoot a few pics & videos. So far i love this camera.

Hey, folks ... hope everyone had a nice weekend. Here in the NE it was warm and sunny and clear for the first time in about 2 weeks!

Here's my first attempts at photographing the moon:

With optical zoom:
moon2.jpg

And, with digital zoom:
moon1.jpg

I probably took 20+ pics just to get these two. The moon (especially the extremely high contrast of a crescent, it seems) is a tough subject, but the pic is pretty cool ... you can see the craters quite distinctly!

:scared1: Those are incredible! I am so impressed.

(You knew this was coming, right?) What settings did you use?;)

I still haven't installed the software, but I have taken lots of random pics. The other night we went to a fireworks show and I was so excited to practice fireworks shots, but I didn't have very good luck AT ALL. I am not entirely upset, though, because the conditions were not optimal. There were several street lights near where we were sitting, as well as police lights flashing from the police that were directing traffic. So even though I was using the fireworks mode and had the camera still, there was all that light confusing the sensors in my camera. I'm having fun, though!

I am trying to take some macro/supermacro shots of some watches DH wants to ebay, but I am having an issue with shadows. If I get close enough to get a good shot, there is a shadow on the watch and in the pic. I've tried outside in full sun, outside in partial sun, in the house near a window, in the middle of the room, with and without flash. Any suggestions?:confused3

Thanks!

I used a tripod and Manual mode. Manually set the focus to infinity and got it centered in the LCD.

For the smaller one: Av=3.5, Tv=1/15, ISO=80. Auto white balance (but I should have used Spot!).

For the bigger one: Av=3.5, Tv=1/50, ISO=100, also Auto White Balance.

Are you trying to take the pic straight down at the watch lying flat? If so, try putting the watch vertical (like wrapped around a 2x4) and shoot it that way.

If you and the camera aren't coming straight down on it, there'll be less shadow in the way.
