Canon S3

  :rotfl2:
This seems to be a repeated title for a thread - but I have literally just
bought it!! About 2 hours ago! So far not too many pics on it, but give me time!! Over the weekend I am hoping to get out and about - and my dog will be very sorry!!!:scared:
Thanks for all the info from people on this thread - most of that is what swayed me to the Canon. :thanks:
Will keep practicing, and posting when I can!!!

Thanks all once again, and "Happy Snapping"!!!

Heather

I just picked one up on Monday, too ... what an awesome camera!

I can't wait to bring it to Disney!!! :goodvibes

On the S3 it is 1/2.5 and on the G7 1/1.8 so what I would like to know is which is the largest sensor. Also is picture quality similar in these two cameras. ?

Congrats and welcome to the S3 family! You too, LPZ_Stitch! I'm sure you'll love yours as much as I love mine!

I already do, and I haven't taking a single picture "worth keeping" yet!

I'm busily learning everything I can about the camera and its features!

Got any good tips for taking decent night pictures without a tripod ('cause carrying a tripod around Disney is NOT going to happen)?

The IS already seems to make a big difference with slow shutter speeds, but I'm sure there's ways to do better!

Great, I love German Shepherd pictures!! Good luck with your new camera (I got my S3 in Nov)! :goodvibes:

You can buy tiny little tripods which take up practically no space at all. I keep one in my pocketbook.

Have fun using your camera!

Make sure you post your first pictures on the "first picture" thread here, probably on page 2 or 3 now.

I tried a few night shots without a tripod, but I'm just not able to hold a camera that still. For our trip to WDW this summer, I bought a Gorilla pod. (You can Google it, made by Joby.) Lightweight, and it'll fit in my tote bag. I'll need to find a trash can or something to stand it on. For the S3, you'll need the mid-size Gorilla pod.

It is a standard fraction, so the one with the smaller number on the bottom is larger. Just like 1/2 cup is larger than 1/4 cup. They really are two completely different cameras designed for different purposes. I would bet the picture quality is better on the G7, but at that price and feature level, why not go ahead and get a DSLR that will be even better than the G7. Also, the G7 is a large p&s, but still a little smaller than the small DSLRs in case size is an issue for you. If you just want a really good p&s and do not want to think about a DSLR, then the S3 gets my vote. Please also note that a replacement of it is expected to be announced soon.

Thanks Kevin,
Size is the most important thing for me, I had the Cannon rebel and sold it as I want a camera to take out every day. I had the S3 IS and sent it back as that is also too big plus had major problems focusing on the rides at Disney. So the G7 was the next one I was considering.

One of the Canon A-series, I think the A6xx ones, also has a 1/1.8" sensor, and I think it's a bit cheaper than the G-series.

You may also want to look at the Fujis, they generally have the largest and clearest PnS sensors and finally are beginning to support SD cards.

Thanks Pea-n-Me - I love them too!!! Just getting to know the camera now - hopefully tomorrow I'll be going to the beach area for the day and the camera will be coming with me! There are so many features on this one that I am a bit bamboozled at the moment!!

Thanks to everyone - I am always on the lookout for tips, and I, too, can't wait to take my camera to WDW. Lots and lots of inspiration here, that's for sure!!:surfweb: :coffee: :wizard:

for shooting an evening parade such as spectromagic, should I still be using sport mode but with no flash?

I just bought a Canon S3 IS and I was just curious if anyone has a simple guide to disney for the camera (or their own personal suggestions)

ie//
evening parades- sport mode no flash
day parades- sport mode flash
fireworks-

etc.

I just had to share. YESTERDAY WAS CAMERA DAY!!! :cool1:  :cheer2: :dance3: My DH is laughing at me because I am going to have to break down and read one of the many manuals that came with this camera (eventually!) Thank you eveyone for your help in deciding on the S3. The community college is offering a digital photgraphy 1 class that a bunch of us are going to take over the summer. I want to really learn how to step out of auto mode and have some fun. I had gotten a dvd and book that my husband and I have been pouring through. We get confused with aperture and shutter speed. I think the video said that the lower the aperture the more focus a macro shot will be and if you have high action a higher shutter speed is what you need. I am memorizing it be thinking that aperture starts with A and is lower in the alphabet than S for shutter. Hope that's right.
