WDWmom,

Thanks. I was just messing around since I saw in another thread that someone took a very nice photo of the moon with their S2.

I would give it a try now when the moon is not full. You may find that full moon is a bit too bright to get good details. Mess around in shutter priority mode when taking the shots. I got decent photos from about 1/600 up to 1/2000 with it. I took about 10 photos at each setting. Below 1/600 seemed to be washed out in the middle of the moon but nicer on the edges with the craters. Also, a tripod is a must have for this shot.

Gotcha:thumbsup2 !

The focus isn't the problem with the A85 photo, it's too much light coming in. If it was less overexposed, you should get similar results to the S3 photo, just smaller.

The moon is fairly bright, too, and doesn't really test low-light ability. You really need something darker and preferably colorful.

I thought that the results would be similar, but the original picture from the A85 was at 1/8 sec and the one below is at 1/200 sec. The results are just as bad but darker.

I have to find some real good low light situations to really test the two cameras, but I think that the S2 would only do slightly better, overall.

This looks like a focus problem to me. The S series are probably better at focusing the moon b/c it has more to work with when zoomed in on it.

............. I HATE IT!!!!

Just kidding - :lmao: ! I think Ive been working too many hours lately....Ive been a little goofy lately. ANYWAYS....

I LOVE IT!!! I just have a lot of playing and reading and testing to do...

But heck, I got 167 days to be a pro at this thing, before my trip!

Thank you all so much! You made my decision easier to make!!! :grouphug:

I think that 'other' moon shot was mine... Here is a daytime moonshot with a S2 (at 12x -- I NEVER use the digital zoom!)

(just More proof that you can be VERY happy with a S2 or S3)

Goofy is good...hopefully that means you're no longer woozy and nervous!!;)

Congrats, you made a great choice!!:thumbsup2

That may have been your shot of the moon that I saw! Good shot. This one is great too. :thumbsup2 I tried to get one during the day, but it didn't come out so good as I didn't have my tripod with me. Also, I love the S2. I'm just starting to realize that it isn't perfect in all situations. Most of the time, I am very pleased with the results though. I just wish it wasn't so limited on real low light shots (not the moon photos). For some reason, the stuff I like to take pictures of seem to be mostly in low light situations. That is the trade off with point and shoot cameras though. I'll live with it just fine until I get enough money for a DSLR. That will be awhile though, I'm afraid.

Kevin, you are right. It is a focus issue with the A85. It said that it was focused but it just never got it. It has no problems with any other shots though, so it must just be a limitation of some sort with the camera.

Great - I'm glad you love it!!! I have fairly well decided that I want to get the S3, too. I'll be the same as you - practice, practice, practice!!!
Congratulations, and don't forget to post your pictures!!!!!

Keep trying.. I think you'll be surprised what the S2 is capable of. The daytime moon shot I posted above, and these from Disney were all handheld and have not been post-processed. They don't compete with SLR pictures, but there not too shabby either.

I am no longer able to access the CanonS3IS website... is anyone else having that problem???:confused3

garris...do you have the cheat sheet? Is it worth the $10?
They get good reviews. I do not have it. It will not fit (folded) into my wife's camera bag. But if it fits in yours and for $10, why not? It's smaller than the manual.

After reading all the posts about the Canon Powershot S3 IS I have decided to buy one for myself for my birthday. Actually I told my DH that is what he is getting me. I bought a Powershot 700IS for him for his birthday because he never liked using my Olympus C-765. He loves how small his camera is and has been practicing.

So I have gotten as far as putting the camera in the cart and am looking at different memory cards. On the site I am buying it through they have a
Sandisk 8GB Ultra II CompactFlash Card. Is this card compatible with the Canon S3 and do I want it? I do not plan on carrying my digital camcorder, so I will probably be taking some video with the camera. On a typical 7 day cruise I will take over 400 pictures easily so I need to make sure I either have several cards or a couple that have a large storage capacity.

In Sept. we are going to WDW for 10 days to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and our DS 5th Birthday. I have a ton of surprises planned and know I will be taking a ton of pictures.

What kind of memory cards do you guys suggest?
