Canon 500D (Rebel T1i, Kiss X3)

so where do you all find "cool" straps? Mines just a plain black one that came with my camera. I hate the strap too cause its too long (im short) to land in a good spot (its mid stomach at its smallest adjustment, which is just BAD cause thats not a very safe spot).

I'm short too (4' 11") and have the same problem with adjusting the straps. I usually end up with a lot of excess hanging off when I get them adjusted all the way.

I have a Canon T1i too, and I have a top loading case that I use for it. It's the Lowepro Topload Zoom Mini Camera Bag http://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-Topload-Zoom-Camera-Black/dp/B00004TX6Z

It holds the camera with the 18-55 mm lens (that came in the kit with my camera), a memory card, and that's it. It's a snug fit, so be aware that you won't have room for extra stuff (even the strap is a tight squeeze when folded up inside). But if you're looking for a case that is as small as possible to hold the camera, then this is a good option in my opinion. Plus, it's inexpensive, so you can always get another one later on if you need to. Do be aware that it wouldn't fit with a larger lens, so if you have a larger one than the 18-55 mm lens, then I'd get a different case.

I'm thinking about finally taking the DSLR plunge as I really like the set of features on the Canon T1i for the price.

Two big-boxes have packages on sale now; HHGregg and BestBuy. Both have the camera and the kit lens, and:

-HHGregg offers the 75-300 f/4-5.6 III.
-BestBuy offers the 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS

BestBuy is $50 more.

I'm somewhat torn between the two options. $50 less and a longer zoom vs. less zoom but a more-expensive IS lens.

Any advice???

Have you checked Costco? They typically have better deals than those 2 stores. Costco.com may have it, but the deals are different in the store than online.

Also check Amazon.com

I'm really trying to decide between the 250IS+$50 and the 300....

Don't get the package with 75-300, the Canon 55-250IS is a much better telephoto lens. Also, compare prices with reputable online sites like www.adorama.com or www.bhphotovideo.com
And - consider increasing your budget and look at the newer T2i (550D). The T2i (550D) has a better image sensor with greater low light performance and full HD video with more features

Both packages seem to be available from everyone for the same prices: ~$850 with the 75-300 and ~$900 with the 55-250IS.

After reading here and a couple of other places, I'm sold on the 55-250IS....

I agree that the T2i has some huge improvements over the T1i. Enough that if budget is a concern you might consider buying a kit with only one lens to have the money for the better camera. For what is really a slight price difference you are getting a good bit more camera.

The lens conversion factor for the T1i is 1.6, so the maximum focal length of the 55-250IS is really 400mm. The effective maximum focal length for the 75-300 would then be 480mm. So the 55-250 gives you image stablilization, but it costs you $50 more and a loss of 80mm while the 75-300 gives you that extra 80mm, but without the IS.
If you're into wildlife photography, you may wish you had that extra focal length or the IS may be more important to you.

I just got a T1i today and was trying some test shots. For some reason it was taking very fast (one after the other) shots, with or without the flash. Then all of the sudden if the flash was on it will take the shot and then say "Busy" for approx 5 or more seconds, repeatitively. I turned it off and back on. Worked like normal, then did it again. Do you think I have a lemon? I really haven't done anything to the settings, and this is in auto mode. I am so frustrated.

If I take it back I probably will get the Nikon D5000 instead, which was what I was deciding between anyways. Any thoughts on it?

Under file numbering it is continuous. I don't know if that is what you mean?

Your camera has a drive mode. You can choose single shooting, continuous shooting, delayed timer, etc. If it's in continuous shooting, lingering your finger on the shutter button will make it continue to shoot.

I have the Xsi, so I'm not sure where your T1i button is. Mine is on the back near the set button. It has a stack of several frames and a timer icon.
