I've had bronchitis for the past 6 days and am on antibiotics. Two days ago, I developed a HUGE canker sore on the inside right corner of my bottom lip. It HURTS. I have a full set of braces, and this is the WORST. I can't eat, can't drink without a straw...

Anyone got any home remedies to try? I've been rinsing with salt water, and Ambesol numbs my whole mouth...

I use Gly Oxide. It doesn't help with the pain, but it heals them pretty quickly. Yogurt is supposed to be good for them too.

This works for me. It won't work immediately, but try applying baking soda directly to the area and letting it set there awhile. It may sting. If there are Milk of Magnesia tablets available in your area (most places have gel-caps, they won't work), you could let the tablet dissolve slowly, touching the canker sore. Don't overdo the MoM tablet, if you have them available...they are actually a laxative, but have a great antacid properties. A Tums may help, also.
Usually these remedies will show much improvement within a day.

Also, avoid acidic beverages and foods, like Orange Juice and cokes/sodas.

I usually get canker sores from eating cantelope, oranges, or other heavily acidic foods.

Also, check with your pharmacist before trying a remedy to make sure that the Calcium in Tums, or the magnesium won't interact with your antibiotic, some antibiotics will bond with other substances, and make them much less effective.

If you don't show improvement in a couple of days, consult your doctor or denist, it could (though rarely) be more than a simple canker sore.

I like Kanka, but my dentist recommended Rincinol and it helps heal the cold sores quicker.

Well, CRAP. I made DH go get me some orange juice last night to up my vitamin C because of the bronchitis. He bought LOW ACID OJ, but still...

Is Kanka or Rincinol available at drugstores?

What about vitamin B6? I've heard it helps...

My daughter gets them from time to time and when they are bad we go to the dentist and he lasers them- costs about 75.00 out of pocket but well worth it-gives instant relief!

If you apply salt directly on the canker sore, it will sting like heck for a short period, but it does heal a lot quicker. I get them all the time, like the other poster said - from orange juice, tomatoes, pineapple, strawberries, anything acidic, including chewing mint gum.

Take care.

If you're on antibiotics, are you sure it's a canker sore and not thrush?
I was on antibiotics for like three weeks straight for pneumonia and now I have thrush inside my upper lip. It looks like a bunch of raised patches really close together. from a distance it looks like a canker sore, but up close, you can see that it's thrush. I hope you feel better. Lip sores are no fun.

I put a Tums or Rolaids between my lip and gum. It sucks up the acid and gets disgusting but it works. I do it several times a day. Hope you feel better.

I put Carmex directly on it. Doesn't taste great, but it really works for me!!

I use Orabase Soothe-n-Seal. It creates a protective barrier over the sore to allow it to heal faster. I also take L-Lysine when I have a canker sore.

Abreva won't help. These are canker sores on the inside, not cold sores on the outside. Completely different thing.

I rinse with salt water. I am going to try the baking soda and MoM tricks next time. I had one on my tonsil once, as big as a quarter. Talk about pain!
Hope you feel better soon! :wizard:

I second that Abrevia (and for that matter, probably L-lysine) are for cold sores (viral, usually on the lips) whereas canker sores are much harder to treat (not viral but caused by foods, damage to the mouth, and other things, and usually inside the mouth on the tongue, cheeks, and soft palate areas.)

I have terrible problems with canker sores .... like ... they are pretty much constant, severe, and most of my life, actually to the point that I started investigating weird genetic disorders that might cause them.

Unfortunately, they are very hard to treat. I have tried every single treatment listed in this thread -- salt, milk of magnesium, alum, avoidance of various foods, you name it. Any benefits I've gotten from any of these treatments are so minimal as to possibly be a placebo effect.

The only thing I can recommend to you are over-the-counter remedies that contain some sort of substance that "coats" the sore. Cank-A is the one that comes to mind. It sort of puts a thin membrane over the sore and protects it for a little bit. It also has a pain releiver in it that works for a little while. It doesn't work great, but if you are very very careful, the coating will stay on for a while and help it feel better. If it is inside your lip (I think you said it was???), it will more likely stay in place for a while than on the tongue. It will probably make the pain bearable, but you'll have to reapply it a lot.

Honestly -- all the stuff with salt or alum or milk of magnesium or whatever that dries out the sore ... well, it does dry it out ... but it can also make it more painful. And in my experience, it doesn't make it go away any quicker. In fact, it can exacerbate the inflammation and make it a bit worse.

My two cents. Unfortunately, nobody knows jack squat about canker sores, and there's nothing out there that really works. Believe me, I've done the research.... :sad1:

I've had great luck with salt applied directly to the canker sore. I do it several times a day and they are usually gone within 48 hours.

Gosh, so many good ideas. Thanks, guys. I had hoped I would wake up and it would be better, but it isn't. I've got wax on my braces to keep them from rubbing against it. I'll have DH run to the pharmacy to see if he can find any of the OTC products.

On the plus side, if I can't eat, I might drop a couple of pounds...

Just asking... I notice that you say that you have tried every remedy listed on this thread.... but, in your list, you do not mention the ones from the other recent thread that I and others have had success with.

1. Lysine - it can't hurt
2. Change toothpaste. Use one with baking soda and peroxide. (I think that these are in the oral rinse Amosan, which is recommended by doctors) Too much of the Lauryl Sodium ingredient, and even too much Fluoride, is definitely KNOWN to trigger canker sores. I haven't had one since I changed to Mentadent years ago.... I was just hoping for whiter teeth... The suppression of canker sores was a welcome surprise. I now use Arm and Hammer.

You say that some experts say that canker sores are not known to be viral. But, personally, I do not buy that. I also firmly believe, as you said, that "nobody really knows squat about canker sores".
