I cannot believe I glossed over this when I was there Christmas of 2014.

It looks so amazing!

I plan to do it this December when I go back.

It is free correct? And is it first come, first seat as is a show like famtasmic?

Is there anything else I need to know?

The only way to guarantee a seat is to buy the dining package. There is a standby line but depending on how popular the narrator is you could be waiting for hours. There are 3 shows a night and a celebrity narrator does 3 days of shows and then on to the next one. The info should come out the end of June/beginning of July but not all of it will be complete for the narrators. We have been 3 times and had a different narrator each time. We go again in Dec. We usually have dinner at Chefs and the 8:15 pm show.

We went for the first time last year. We did the Dining Package at Biergarten , a wonderful Christmas atmosphere, followed by a performance with Neil Patrick Harris, he was amazing. Purchase the Dining Package, you won't be sorry.

Yep, it's free, but doubtful you can get a seat unless you line up Waaaaay in advance- like 2 hours! There is very limited (no joke) space for the stand by lines, as most of the amphitheater is taken up by folks who have used the dining package.
Quite honestly, it was worth every single nickel of our dinner to be in a reserved section. We actually lined up an HOUR in advance because we wanted "good" seats. They let us in 45 minutes prior to the show. They did not let stand by in until maybe 15 minutes before. So even with the dining package you need to arrive a bit early.
But the show was AHH-MAZING!
America Ferrera was the narrator that evening and was wonderful!

How about going to the first show? We do book a package but we have gone again to a first showing and generally have not had a long wait. That could work if people do not want to pay for a package.

We went to the first show, during the week (not weekend) and I'm here to tell you the stand by lines was 2 hours long, no exaggeration!.
My recommendation would be to get the cheapest lunch available and not waste your time in line, there were people in line for the first show that were turned away, or waited for the next show.
This is a hugely popular show with limited seating.
Edited to add: The theatre only holds 1,000 people, unlike Fantasmic which holds, I believe 5,000. I also believe, like all things Disney, that each year it just gets busier and busier... We used to go at the same time of year and crowds were light during the week, even at Epcot, I just don't think that's so true anymore...

It would definitely depend on the narrator. With a really popular one like Neil Patrick Harris, I doubt that doing the first show would be any better.

And if you don't get a seat you can also stand on the walkway and see/hear the show that way. We walked up shortly before the show started and stood to watch most of it from outside the theater. There is no way I could ever convince DH to wait in line for 2 hours for something we could see from the walkway.

Is the first showing before or after Thanksgiving?

I am so sorry, I wasn't clear! We went to the first show of the day, not season. We were there December 9th.
We also noticed that Epcot was much busier this past year, than the same days/dates in previous years.
Sorry for miscommunication!
The first show of the season was the day following Thanksgiving.
Hope this helps...

you can buy a dinner package for it or wait in a long line ( some a few hours) I did it last year will I do it again no not unless I some how get in right before the show. with out waiting or spending money on the dinner pacage ( unless I am eating at the restraint any ways)

Neil Patrick Harris is almost always there the first 2 days of December, like Nov. 30 - 2, something like that if you're interested in seeing him. All the narrators are good though.
It is recommended that you be there 45 minutes early at the least, even with a ticket.

ETA: we got there around 50 minutes early, were near Italy, and were near the back. I love all the seats, though. There are no bad ones, IMO.

Last year, we were able to get wrist bands earlier in the day. There was a line (around noon?) and CMs handed out colored wristbands - a different color for the different CP show time that day. Then close to CP time there was a separate wristband line that was seated between the dining package folks and the "regular" SBline. Any idea if that may be another option this year?

I think it has been available for at least 2 years now and I would imagine it wouldn't change. I think your whole party has to be present to get a wristband.

We are definitely interested in CP this year for our trip and we want to do the dinner package. Can I go on ahead and make a dining reservation for the night I want to see CP and then make it a dinner package once the "official dates" are released, or can that be done anytime?
