Cancelling-what happens to our points?

We have four families going on our points on 10/24 and one may have to cancel.

We are using some banked points from 2003, our 2004 points and some borrowed from 2005. What happens to the points if we cancel at less than 30 days? And is there any other deadline (like 7 days before, etc.)

To make things even more complicated, we have four studios for night 1; two studios and one 2-bedroom for night 2 and then two 2-bedrooms for nights 3,4,5,6. This is going to be messy!

Thanks!

First I would find out which rooms were paid for with banked points and try not to cancel those...

you can switch names on the rooms, so that isnt an issue. I have found that the CM's are good at sorting all this out... Just explain that you need to cancel a set of rooms and you need their guidence as which rooms are the lesser of two evils. Most MS CMs can help you. If you feel like the one your talking to, isnt getting it... tell them you have to go and call back later.

Since is is less that 30 days out, the points for the canceled rooms go into holding. Points in hold can only be booked 60 days out and I dont think you can use them at DVC resorts, but I could be wrong.

(((((((hugs)))))))) I booked 19 rooms, which went to 17 rooms which went to 14 rooms which went to 12 rooms.... I had used bank, borrowed and current points from 5 different contracts, 3 home resorts and 2 uys. Hope that helps make your situation seem better. LOL

Laurabearz is right that any points that are returned to you after cancelling will be in the Holding Account. You can only make reservations 60 days or less before using these points. They also cannot be banked or borrowed and will expire at the end of this Use Year. At this point, it doesn't really matter whether they cancel the borrowed points or the current points since they will all expire at the end of this Use Year. If you were more than 31 days out for cancelling, then it would be more important to be sure to use up the borrowed (or banked) points first.

You can use the Holding Account points for any DVC or non-DVC option, subject to the regular usage restrictions and only when you book 60 days or less out.

The only other deadline is that if you do not cancel prior to the actual day of check-in (don't show up at all or contact them on check-in day), the entire reservation is cancelled and the points are forfeited.

When you are 60 days or less from the end of your use year you can only use the points for DVC lodging.

Sounds like it might be a good time to use your double secret one time banking exception. If you have to cancel, you would likely be able to both remove the points from the holding account and bank them. I don't know about the 2003 points, you might not be able to carry those over even if you do this.

With 1 family not going, it looks like you would have to cancel 1 studio for nights 1 & 2. What about the two 2 bedrooms for nights 3, 4, 5, 6 - will you still need both? You could see if there are any 1 bedrooms at this point but that maybe unlikely. You might not be able to save too many points at this time.

Thank you all for your responses. I was finally able to call MS late this afternoon. All the info you gave me is correct. The real question I wanted to ask was about the 2 bedroom, since we would now only need the 1 bedroom part of it. The gentleman I spoke with was very nice and said that we could in effect cancel the studio part of our 2 bedroom....he phrased it as 1/4 of our reservation. So I feel a little better...at least we will not lose all the points. That was my real concern. I really hope this family is able to come, but we'll have to see.

Thanks again!

That is a different answer than most of us have gotten the past few years. USUALLY, they require you to cancel the 2 BR then rebook the 1 BR. If there's a waiting list, you would lose the nights that were full. But it is a question that has had multiple answers depending on who you talked to when. So don't be surprised if the next time you ask, you're told you can't just cancel the studio and keep the 1 BR.

This is actually what I am afraid of...but I guess I won't know for sure until I try to actually do this. Hopefully, I won't have to, but I won't know until next week.

Thanks again.
