Cancelling and rebooking online question

If I cancel a reservation to rebook the exact same days with the room catagory that I originally wanted that happens to become available, do the points from the cancelled reservation show up in your account immediately? I would need to use these points to book the new room type, but would need to do it right away in order to snag the dates that became available without borrowing from the next use year.

I've cancelled several reservations on-line and the points were back in my account immediately.
