Cancelled reservation, points not applied to new reservation

I cancelled a reservation in which my banked points were applied. I cancelled that reservation and later made a new reservation at a later time and different resort. Member Services did not use the banked points on the new reservation, why not? I thought this would have been automatic to always use bank points first.

When I called to bank left over points in the current year, they told me the previously banked points would go into a holding account (because I was inside the 30 day window) and could not be reallocated to the new reservation. Obviously, I am now stuck with the holding points to rent on short notice or lose them. Anyone have this happen to them?

I’m sorry this happened to you, but holding is nothing new for a close in cancellation. Had you not cancelled, but modified this wouldn’t have happened or had you cancelled a little further out. Sometimes MS has granted waivers to the rule for extenuating circumstances- hurricane, death of family member. When do your points “pumpkin?”

Was the new reservation that you made, that didn't use your banked points, occur during your next UY? Maybe that's why the banked points weren't applied first (because they were now stuck in the previous UY)?

Did you cancel greater than 31 days from check-in? If not, those points will go into holding to be used within 60 days.

I might be OCD, but every time I book and/or cancel any reservation, I look where the points came from. I do a lot of math (which may be unnecessary) and use a spreadsheet to make sure I end up with the correct amount of points at the end of the day. If it doesn't look right, I make a call to MS.

Nothing should have gone into holding. They were telling you that if they applied them then the points currently in the reservation would have gone into holding. So what you have is points that will expire at the end of the UY but there are no holding restrictions on them.

Do you own at more than one resort or multiple contracts? That could be why MS did not get them selected to be used. I'd call back again and speak to someone else. And if they can't do anything then ask to speak to a supervisor. It can't hurt to ask to have them correct it.

The good thing to always do is to check your points balances after booking a reservation and make certain that the points you expected to be used were.

This is such good advice.

I don’t think we have enough info here.

When I called to bank left over points in the current year, they told me the previously banked points would go into a holding account (because I was inside the 30 day window) and could not be reallocated to the new reservation.

Were you asking them about what had previously happened?

Or were they talking about the reservation you currently have and what would happen if you canceled that?

. I cancelled that reservation and later made a new reservation at a later time and different resort. Member Services did not use the banked points on the new reservation, why not?

I assume you canceled inside of the time when points would go into holding?

Wear that entire reservation paid with the banked points? Was it inside of that 30 days before checkin? If it was inside of the holding period then it makes sense that the points went into holding.

And if your next reservation was for a timeframe where you can’t use holding points, then it makes sense that they weren’t used.

Ok, so this is what I learned about my dilemma. My use year is September. My original reservation was made for a few nights in December using banked points, the reservation was cancelled in December, long before the 30 day cutoff. Later a reservation was made for late May of this year. They did not use the available banked points for this reservation. When I tried online to bank my points on may 3rd, I noticed that the banked points had not been allocated to the current reservation. When I called member services to find out what was going on, member services said if they reallocated and used my banked points, then the points released would be inside the 30 days and thus become holding points. That is the issue, in my opinion, they should always use available banked points for any reservation when the reservation is made.

As suggested, I called member services, asked for a supervisor and explained my dilemma. He said they would use the bank points for the current reservation and not place the replaced points into holding, which allowed for all unused points to be banked. They were quick to point out this was a one time exception. To me they were only correcting their problem. ALL banked points should be the first to be used in my opinion.

Thanks to all of you who offered an explanation and/or suggestions. Lesson learned, check to be sure your points are being used they way you intended and not wait until you are inside the 30 day window to bank points into the next used year.

Glad you got it sorted! A follow on question if I may? Was the second reservation (May) booked online or via phone? Just curious as to the human element. I understand that banked/borrowed should always go first and I suppose the online system defaults to that. Just wondered if a MS CM entered reservation is a more manual type entry, with more room for error?
