Got an E-mail yesterday from our beach house Real Estate company which said that the oil spill is not covered by our cancellation policy. Feel stupid, but I've never read cancellation policies in the past. I've just assumed that they covered any and everything.

Don't take that as the final word. Travel insurance isn't any different from any other insurance. An initial denial is not unusual even if the policy really does cover the event, accident whatever.

Read the policy they sent to you (and if they didn't send one, insist on them sending it to you). If it doesn't seem to exclude this event, call the state insurance commissioner's office and ask them. They won't interpret the policy but they usually can say what exclusions are permitted or not.

I don't think that the OP is talking about trip insurance but about the cancellation policy of the beach house rentals themselves. I read an article a bout how the beach house owners and the like are worried about their losses due to the oil spill. People are cancelling and they are not able to fill the open spaces. This would be why the OP got the email to inform that cancellation due to this is not going to be acceptable.
