Just wondering how much cancellation insurance is? We've never bought it before so I have no idea how much it costs. We get our medical thru CAA.

Our trip to Disney is about $3000 with flight. how much can you expect to spend on cancellation?

We got ours through Disney and I think it was just under $140 US. Didn't plan on purchasing it originally but since our trip was in January with potential weather problems and illness, I figured it was a small amount compared to the cost of our trip.

I think you can get an estimate on the CAA site. Insurance is a must for cancellation, you never know what may happen with parents, grandparents, kids...

If your trip is booked through the WDTC their cancellation policy is pretty generous..so Insurance not really necessary on the Resort portion anyways. Typically-Insurance runs around 10% of the package cost....

I regret not having it. I have medical, but not cancellation. I have been sick lately and I am really hoping I don't have to cancel as I will be out 1/2 the cost of my cruise, all of my airline, and my DVC points will go into a holding account. I would buy the insurance - better safe than sorry (like me).

I went on the CAA website & it seems like the price changes based on when you buy it? So if I buy it now it will be more expensive than if I buy it in 4 months from now. I'm not sure if it will be worth it. Travel Guard is who Disney uses but they want $63 US per person, but if I buy thru Travel Guard Canada it's cheaper & in CAD. I called them yesterday with some questions. I know Disney only charges $100 to change or cancel your reservation which is why I'm not sure if it will be worth it. We actually cancelled my parents this past Sept because my dad had heart trouble right before we left & Disney waived the fee & the airline gave me a credit so we didn't lose any money. My DH, DS & I still went which I think is why they were so nice. I'm thinking of just getting it for the air portion. I will have to crunch #'s though. Airtran is $59 one way to fly & if the cancellation is more than that, then why buy it right?

the disney one you are only charged for adults children 17 and under are included in the adults price I just went to the travel guard canadian sit and it was $48 for each of us even the kids

Is that with cancellation or just medical? I bought medical thru CAA last time & it was $43 for my whole family.

I'll have to call them. My dad now has a pre-existing condition so we have to be careful who we get medical thru. I called Disney to ask them about their insurance but they told me they couldn't help me & I'd have to call Travel Guard US with my questions. The Travel Guard Canada covers his condition as long as he's stable 6 months before we go. If anything happens in that 6 months they won't cover it & they won't be able to go. He goes back in March to have his pacemaker checked & if everything is ok than he won't have it checked again for 6 months & we should be good. The lead has "moved" so we're hoping he won't have anything wrong with him because if he has to undergo another operation to fix the lead, then he's disqualified for any heart trouble he incurs in the US.

its everything even if you have not bought air with them

here is all you get

Wow I just read that PDF & they waive the pre-existing condition! One of the CM I spoke to last year told me they covered pre-existing conditions but didn't realize to the extent. Guess we'll be getting our insurance thru Disney!

Thanks Jared's mommy!

Edited to ask is anyone knows. It says $10,000 for sickness & $10,000 for accident. Is that all the coverage you get? Because as I read on it says:

MAXIMUM LIMIT OF LIABILITY: All limits are applied per Trip. The
Insurer’s maximum limit of liability resulting from the same
occurrence will be $10,000,000 under the Travel Guard Program
Policies (TGP Policies). If loss for all Insureds from such an occurrence
exceeds $10,000,000, the Insurer will pay each Insured that
proportion of the Benefits stated which $10,000,000 bears to the
total loss of all persons the Insurer insures under all travel and flight
insurance in force, under the TGP Policies. The Insurer will pay no
more than $250,000 per occurrence, under the TGP Policies, to or on
account of any person insured under the TGP Policies.

I just called them & $10,000 is their top amount paid out for either of those. Kind of scary with how much medical costs are down there.

I think we'll be going with someone else.

check BMO we use them for our other travel
you can pop in and grab a booklet and in it there is a clause if you exchange $100 then you get free cancelation insurance. Alot of the tellers done't know this and you have to show them the page, ther is something they have to stamp to show you exchanged it
last time I got it the 4 of us to go to mexico for 2 weeks it is about $79
for medical and cancelation
the medical I am not to worried about for us the disney one is just an extraed added on to the umlimited that DH gets from work but it was the cancelation and luggage and the other I was looking at it for.
But for your parents they shoud look around look check their credit card too the may offer a better policy that fits them better
My inlaws go to Australia fro a few months a year and mastercard gold insurance fits their needs

Yes they do not carry any other insurance thru credit cards & whatnot. They need something that will cover his heart & more than $10,000. If he has a heart attack down there, $10,000 isn't going to take us very far.

we don't have insurance with our mastercard but it wasn't to much to add it on for the year
I think it was $180 for a whole year?
I could be wrong but if they do have credit cards it can hurt to see what they offer as an add on?

BMO offers it as well, but again, it has a limitation on pre-existing conditions that is worse than Travel Guard Canada. So far Travel Guard Canada is our best bet for insurance with them. They have a 180 day clause for anything to do with the heart. Once you are over 60 insurance is difficult to get unless you are in perfect health. Sad thing is, my dad worked at teh same place for 43 years & never once was sick, he's never had anything wrong with him, but a flukey heart beat that caused him to pass out a few times last summer which prompted him to get a pacemaker now makes it difficult for him because of insurance for out of province. Very frustrating.

I told him to go in to CAA & find out what they say. Snowbirds travel to the US all the time, they must get insurance somewhere.

I've done a bit of research on travel canc insurance for our upcoming cruise. I think TravelGuard Canada has the best policy at the best price. I would look into the bank and credit card policies very carefully.

As for snowbirds getting insurance - they get it and for those that have preexisting conditions - they pay bigtime for it! My aunt's friend had a heart attack 2 years ago - ok since - and he just paid almost $8000 for 3 months of coverage to spend the winter in Florida :scared1: !!!!!

I actually just looked into Medipac which specializes in snowbirds & they have a 90 day exclusion so if he's stable for 90 days before we go they cover the pre-existing condition. It wasn't that expensive either, obviously more expensive than us, but still not bad for a week & peace of mind. I think if you have a heart attack (which my dad didn't have) it's a bit different & probably more expensive. I contacted Blue Cross as well & they have a questionaire that you take to your Dr to have filled out & then assess whether they can lift the exclusion based on the Dr's report. He hasn't had any problems since Sept 2009, & he goes for his final pacemaker check at the end of March so by then we'll know everything. He says he feels great since they put the pacemaker in. They put it in because his heart stopped 3x & he passed out each time but it only stopped for a second & then started back up so the pacemaker was a precaution. Since he's had it in, his heart has never stopped or slowed down each time he's had it checked. It was just a flukey thing that happened. The CCU at the hospital said they've never seen anything like it, they have no idea why it happened. No sign of a stroke, no evidence of a heart attack in his blood work, no nothing & it's never happened before & it's never happened again.
