Sometime between Dec-Jan I'll know for sure if I have a conflict with a May trip to OKW.If I have to cancel this trip, what happens to my points ? I have an Oct use year. The points used were Oct '01-'02,not banked or borrowed. Also,we booked a Mar trip for my son (at OKW) that required borrowing 40 pts from this years allotment. Can points from my canceled trip take the place of my borrowed points? Just curious what my options are.

Since you are using your Oct. 2002 points, there is no problem at all. You can cancel up until the end of March and still be able to bank 100% of your year's allotment. As long as you cancel 31 days before check-in, the points just go back to being points.

I wouldn't use them instead of your borrowed points. Those borrowed points will have to be used somehow before the end of the year. They can't be "put back".

Ok, let me see if I understand...

The trips are in March and May of 2003, right?

If the points you are using for the May trip are from your October '01 - '02 use year, then technically, they were banked points. You may not have specifically requested that they be banked, but if you had them available, MS will ususally use the older points first. (The determining factor is when the points are USED, not when the reservation is made.) If you cancel this reservation more than 31 days ahead of time, your points will be OK, but they must be used by September 30 of this year. They cannot be banked again.

If the March reservation was made with October '02 - '03 points, then they technically were not borrowed, for the same reason -- it's when the points are used, not when the reservation was made.

If you have to cancel your May reservation, I would recommend switching those points to your March reservation, since they must be used by September 30. You can always bank your current year points if you don't think you're going to use them.

If I misunderstood your use year info, disregard this and follow the advice of someone else. ;)

Points from a cancelled reservation are simply returned to the current use year.

I'm a little confused by the comment "The points used were Oct '01-'02,not banked or borrowed." If they were points from Oct, 2001 they would have to be banked points to be used in May, 03. If they are in fact points from the current use year (Oct, 2002) they will just be returned to be banked or used for another reservation prior to Oct, 2003.

The points you borrowed for the Mar, 03 trip cannot be returned to their orginal use year, so there is no advantage to using them in place of the points borrowed from Oct 2003.

Doc, the May '03 trip was booked June '02. I goofed on the years I quoted. They were Oct 02-03 points, sorry for the confusion.

Your post is somewhat unclear. You say are using Oct 01 to 02 points for a trip next May but say they are not banked or borrowed. The only way 01 to 02 points could be used for a trip in May 03 is that you have banked them into the Oct 02 to 03 use year.

Cancellation rules: if you cancel 31 or more days from date of arrival, points retain whatever status they had before -- if current use year points, they are remain current use year points and can be banked as long as you are within banking deadlines at the time you cancel that trip. If they are banked or borrowed points, they retain that status and must be used by the end of the use year into which they have been banked or borrowed. If you cancel 30 days or less before arrival date, all points become holding account points and must be used by end of the use year and can only be used to make a ressie 60 days or less before arrival date.

As to your son's trip, again your post is somewhat unclear. If there is a trip next March using "borrowed" points then those points had to be borrowed from the Oct 03 to 04 year, not from the 01 to 02 year. If they are points from the 01 to 02 year then you must have "banked" them to use for that March trip. If they are points that were issued Oct 02 and good to Oct 03, then they are "current use year " points in relation to that March 03 trip and are not banked or borrowed. (Points you use for a trip are determined by date of trip -- when you call to reserve is not a determinative date; in other words, if you called April 02 to make a ressie for March 03, the "current use year" points for that trip are the ones issued Oct 02 to 03 and if you used those you did not borrow or bank).

In any event, if you used borrowed points for a March trip MS might allow you to replace them with current points but you don't want to do that. Points once borrowed stay borrowed and points once banked stay banked and must be used by end of use year into which they were banked or borrowed. In other words, replacing those borrowed points with regular points won't change their status from being borrowed points that still must be used by end of use year into which they were borrowed.
