Cancel trip because of rising COVID rates?

Risk tolerance varies for so many reasons. We cancelled September and December, wondering now about February. We found another outlet that allows less contact, beach trips. We will return to Disney but after things look better in the community Covid wise and when Disney adds more of the things we go there for.

If nervous I would cancel any indoor dining, avoid the rope drop crush, and make sure you have a high quality mask with a filter that fits very well.

Part of my concern is having to mess with the airline/hotel mess.

SW has changed our flights twice now. Each time they offer us to accept/modify their changes or cancel for a full refund. So far we have modified.

Our hotels are booked using DVC and we can cancel with no penalties as long as it is outside of 30 days.

If there are travel restrictions imposed within 30 days I don't want to deal with the hassel of airline credits or DVC points issues.

We cancelled our October trip for similar concerns. Our next trips are April and October next year. Hoping to be able to both of them.
Agree, dealing with the airlines has been the biggest hassle.

I will be there the first week in Dec. I work in Healthcare - wear a mask and faceshield every day. I am tired and want a break. I think Disney is doing a good job of keeping people safe in the bubble so therefore I am going. If I get it, then ok, I will deal with it but I feel I have more of a chance of getting it where I work than i do at Disney at this time.

We drove down to Florida to visit family and made a mini vacation at Disney. We previously have canceled plans last March and July and we just needed to go somewhere.

In terms of the Parks, we never felt unsafe even when we ate in doors. We work masks even putting extra filters in. I utilized the hand washing stations or hand sanitizer stations often.

We were thinking of going back next March because we don't think we'll be able to go any where else.

Went to Universal in July and WDW in September and am due to head back to WDW in 4 short days!

My only regret is that I have not been able to take more trips to take advantage of the greatly reduced crowds.

If the OP just got over Covid then I would go because imagine it would be extremely difficult to get it again in the next few weeks.

I think the problem is that even if you already had it, you can still bring it back home to those who haven't if exposed... I think.

GO!

We went in Aug when the numbers were even higher - WDW is totally safe. We did change plans at the last minute and extended our stay on-property. We were going to spend the night before and the night after at the Embassy Suites in Orlando due to our flight times - we did not regret doing that (though it did mess up my DVC point planning for years to come). I've also said this many times; it's like COVID safety boot camp. You will come back wondering why the same procedures aren't in place everywhere else. We could very well have ended the COVID shutdowns a long time ago if they were.

Isn't the point of a message board to talk to other people about their experiences and ask for advice and recommendations?

of course. not sure why you singled me out on this as other people expressed similar sentiments - I did give advice. My advice is that other people's opinions wont move this needle. this is a question of personal safety and measuring risk as it relates to your family.

i personally have posted extensively about how I'm going to keep my trip in 6 days. There have been multiple threads about "should I keep or should I cancel" within the last couple of weeks.

I've found that this goes one of three ways:
- the people keeping their trip try to explain or justify their reasoning
- the people who have cancelled or not booked trips explain why no one should go
- people who fall into either category who just say - do what you feel comfortable doing

If you are going to spend your whole trip worried about safety then don't go. We were supposed to go to Hilton Head DVC resort when it first reopened but I cancelled that because the area around the resort was REALLY BAD with mask compliance and things were not being enforced. Restaurants were operating at full capacity, many restaurants ended up shutting down because so many workers became sick.
If we could have exclusively stayed on property (like we're doing at WDW) we would have kept that trip - but we would have been all over Hilton Head just out of necessity - their onsite restaurants don't stay open past 4pm. We would have to rent a car, and get gas, groceries etc. - and i would have been EXTREMELY worried the entire time. And that is not a vacation.

I'm NOT worried about WDW because it is a bubble (of sorts) with stringent and enforced requirements and we don't have to leave our bubble.

Is that an appropriate level of advice?

If anyone's looking to cancel, can it be someone with a BWV reservation the second week of December? I'd love to move over from Saratoga.
If you haven't done so already, you might want to set up a waitlist for this. I was in a BWV G/P view and waitlisted a Boardwalk view for the second week in Dec, and it came through last week. So, there are people cancelling and moving around.
Good luck!!! :shamrock:

No one can tell you what you should do -
Just like no one should tell other people to stay home.

Appreciate the info on Philly, as that's where I'd be flying out of.

As for the no one can tell you what to do, I don't understand that argument. Those recommending we stay home, wear masks, social distance are doctors. I take their advice just as I would my own if doctor told me I need to stop smoking or stop eating out.

Although the stop eating out part would be a no discussion in WDW :)

I’m about to cancel our trip that’s scheduled for Nov 27. We’re in our 60s, both essential workers. I also have to help with my 88 year old mom several times a week. NY state & our workplaces have testing or quarantine requirements for traveling. I just don’t want to deal with those. Plus I think it would be unfair to my siblings to not help with my mom for weeks because I am away & then staying away for another week or 2 to make sure I don pass anything on to her.

I think I am comfortable with Disney’s actions so I would be comfortable there. If we were retired & I didn’t have to worry about my mom, we might go. We could just quarantine after. OTOH, we have been being careful all these months. I don’t want to throw that all away & risk getting sick traveling. The numbers in our area are going up again, as they are all over the US. My conscience tells me the responsible thing to do is stay home & try to stop the spread. Just probably not the time for leisure travel.

okay.....but the OP asked if we can tell them to go or not to go and I'm saying no we can't....
I'm not sure why saying something like this is such a trigger for people.
I'm suggesting people speak from places of bias on these boards, leaning heavily toward what they've already decided to do.

I'm going to WDW in 6 days - i'm not telling people NOT to go. I have justified it based on personal reasons having to do with the safety precautions in place that have consistently remained in place since reopening as well as the measure of risk that we are willing to take along with the precautions we are willing to put into place upon return. We are going, when we get back we are putting ourselves into quarantine - even though it isn't required in our state. Kid stays home from school. We order groceries. Our choice to go on vacation shouldn't affect someone else who chose to stay home. But my opinion is biased based on what I've chosen to do.

Someone else who isn't going because they just cancelled their trip due to safety concerns will probably tell you to cancel....

And someone else who never booked a trip because of safety concerns would tell me I'm crazy for going.

Which is why I said no one can tell you whether or not to go.

Incidentally - my cousin is a pediatric neurologist in Tampa FL - she knows us, we are not in a risk group, she said we should absolutely go. So i did talk to a doctor...she's been to the parks several times and feels safe doing so.

In my opinion, and I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV, it is more risky to go to an extended family Thanksgiving get together at this time than it is for my family to fly to WDW. But you know what they say about opinions....

Hi everyone--hope you're all staying positive (and testing negative!)

My husband and I have a WDW trip planned for the first week of December, but with COVID rates rising so quickly, we're thinking of canceling. Is anyone else considering the same? I'd love to know where your thoughts are!

I think I'm a little more nervous than when I booked our trip, not only because rates are booming, but because we've been especially battered around the last month (us and the rest of the world!). We actually just recovered from having COVID ourselves (my husband caught it from work--funny that it only happened now, after being an essential worker all year in NYC!) We're really grateful that we both had mild cases and knew about the exposure immediately, so could fully quarantine without inadvertently spreading it to others. I just don't know if going to Disney right now is a "dumb idea," but also my God, we could really use a dose of hope and magic in our lives.

nope...we were there in September and it was awesome. So awesome....watching youtubes last night of christmas decorations we decided to do a long weekend in december. Zero F's given about covid.

Disney is doing more then what is required to keep things clean. I would go without a mask if I could and not think twice about it.

Don't live your live in fear.

Isn't the point of a message board to talk to other people about their experiences and ask for advice and recommendations?

Yes...until you dont agree with the established agenda...then you are reprimanded and put in time out. Sometime management only wants their view point to be listened to...dissenters are not welcome.

We're going 12-1 to 13. Can't wait.
Also not worried about Disney.
Airport is my concern. Carrying lots of sanitizer and masks.
