Cancel Poly and use $$ for BLT

Since learning about BLT, I am leaning toward canceling 9 night stay at Poly the week after Christmas this year :(
and then using cash for downpayment on BLT and going next year at same time.

THE PROBLEM IS THE POLY ADDICTION IS STRONG. :headache:

Anyone want to chime in with opinion??

Well...owning a DVC is more then just going on vacation, there is a long term committment. The week of Christmas or the week after christmas is really expensive in terms of dollars or DVC points, which means you'd have a larger purchase in points and you'd also have higher annual dues.

As for the resort itself, you're talking night and day different, BLT is contemporary/modern, while Poly is tropical.

All that said, I really liked Polynesian too, but we bought in at AKV (love AKV too). Its close in terms of interior lighting (more dark/subtle) but the overall atmosphere is still very different. The long term benefit to owning DVC far outweighed the resort difference.

I would´ve liked to do that....

We just were on september nine nights at Poly, as we are a family of six and we invited my DM and dear single sister (we were a total of 8) and paid only for room (concierge level) and tickets $15,000.

So with another trip like that I would pay more than I will pay for my DVC. With just two vacations, more than I will pay for a whole life of travels to the magic!!!!!   Who can resist to that???

I know poly has a different atmosphere, but rooms are small and maybe, they will build a DVC on Poly or GF our preferred resorts. So, while enjoying my spacious BLT 2BR, I will wait for a future MK DVC... popcorn::

Definitely dollar wise, it makes sense as I just spent 6k last April at Poly. This was a surprise trip so you would think cancelling it would be easy. The only one who knows is me.

I guess that stupid countdown thing pops up each morning and like today when it says 17 days . . . doesn't help

I understand your dilemma! We own DVC but I still booked the 4/3 deal for the Poly concierge next June -- the lure of the Poly is too strong to resist! :goodvibes

But financially, it's a lot of $$ that you could use for a purchase.

I wouldn't buy dvc unless I had the cash to pay for it in full - and canceling the Poly trip is one way to accumulate a good chunk towards that. The week you were going is horrible anyway - huge crowds, long waits, etc. That's a very expensive week in dvc, too.

Back in 2005 I wanted to stay at the Contemporary and when I looked at how much DVC was $13,500 at that time for 150 points I said wow, Am I crazy. I can put the $3,000 towards DVC and it would only be $10,500 and I get to stay in a 1 bedroom at the BW for 1 week everyyear for the next 38 years. Or I could take 4.5 deluxe trips???? :confused3

We bought DVC that day!!!

The thing you need to remember is that you can buy 160 points and borrow and bank the points each year. (that means you have 320 every 2 years or 480 every 3 years) So you don't always have to stay in a DVC.

The BLT will cost more to stay in and if you only by 160 points and want a 1 bedroom for a week with a MK view you will be spending a lot more than 160 points for the week

A lot of people don't like the fact that they can't go to other resorts but if you buy a smaller contract instead of a larger 320 point contract to use every year you will be able to stay at the POLY or anyother favorite hotel every other year. That way you would get the best of both worlds.

I own at the BW and just bought into BLT so now I am within walking distance to 3 parks (how cool is that). We will be using our points for split stays and getting MK and BW view rooms. So I'm getting the best of both worlds too.

GOOD Luck with your decision!!

we had the same dilemma (but with different resorts) years ago.
absolutely loved the YC, but the lure of DVC (with larger rooms for less $) was strong.
we wound up buying at the BWVs (added on at BCV & SSR), & found we loved it more than any other resort ~ especially once they made BW view a seperate booking catagory :cloud9: it was the best of all worlds: the closeness of EPCOT, with a killer view in a stunning resort.

every so often, we do book a few nights at another resort (GF, poly, YC, etc), but end our vacation with a DVC room. it saves a few points (the weekend points are really high), & we get to stay at some of our old favorites.
the poly will still be there, & great for a weekend stay, or the first few nights of a DVC vacation :)

I know poly has a different atmosphere, but rooms are small...

The Poly rooms are some of the largest on property. You cannot really compare a standard Poly room to anything but a Studio at DVC, and the Poly rooms are about 409 square feet while SSR is 355, VWL and BCV are 356, BWV is 359, and OKW is 376.

Did you read my entire post?

So, while enjoying my spacious BLT 2BR

I am not comparing it with a studio, I am comparing the two rooms we had (as we were eight) at Poly to a spacious 2BR at BLT were I own and wich also has a living room with a kitchen...... No more kid sleeping with their parents!!!!! :lmao:

Look, maybe only if you are a small family that uses only one hotel room (at Poly or GF) maybe it would not the best option to buy points for a DVC studio. However I would do it for a 1BR even when I don´t want to cook on vacation, but for space.

As we are a family of six............... 2BR with living room and kitchen is by far more comfortable from two hotel rooms, it doesn´t matter how spacious the rooms were.

We stayed @ Poly or the first time last month. While it was nice, it certainly was not worth the $$ for us. Don't get me wrong, I'm not Poly bashing, but it just wasn't great for us.

IMHO, it makes much more sense to buy vacations in primo accommodations for the next 50 years for the cost of just a few deluxe trips. If you're major addicted to Poly and cant imaging staying anywhere else DVC might not be the best bet for you. But if you are more interested in huge villas at a much lower price well.....DVC:goodvibes

Yes, I did read your entire post, but for reference to the OPs, it was important to note that you cannot compare apples to oranges, and you can get a suite at Poly (and the other Deluxe resorts), so if you were to compare you need to step it up. The cost to get enough points for a 2 bedroom at BLT would change the equation when looking at getting a normal room at the Poly.

Not saying I disagree with the space of a DVC and the 1, 2 and GVs as we have enough points to get a 1 bedroom every year, we didn't want a studio.

Ok, you are right, but as far as I know Poly doesn´t have 2BR suites so, we can not compare apples to oranges as you said.

But for reference, I could say that a 2BR at the GF (that only sleeps 8 instead of 9 at BLT) costs for a week in the lowest season: $12,876.00

So once again to get 50 years/one week per year vacations in a 2BR suite at BLT will cost you less than three weeks in the GF suite.

Easy equation and easy to choose between 50 years of vacations or just 3.

50 vs 3...................... That is a very personal desicion.

Good look with yours OP!!! :thumbsup2
