Canadian Olympic thread

SOOOOO CLOSE! He was so far ahead of the American too!

It's a shame Canadians kept getting wiped out in the quarter and semis

Silver isn't bad, but the Gold was RIGHT THERE!!

Another Canadian has won a gold medal!!

Women's Snowboard Cross.

CONGRATULATION MAELLE RICKER!!

Way to go Maelle! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

Okay, I have to say that the Swiss rider who came in third (Olivia Nobs) really embodies the Olympic spirit. As Maelle's name was announced during the flower ceremony, Olivia did that arm pumping thing you do when trying to encourage people to cheer louder (not that they needed encouragement).

Totally agree. It was quite the contrast to the Aussie silver medalist in the men's moguls. Even at the medal ceremony he still looked bitter. :sad2:

Why would the Olympics make this allowance?

It looks like it came down to $$$$$. This is from an 2006 CBC news story.

Hockey games at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver will be played on North American-sized ice surfaces instead of the larger international rink, organizers have announced.

In a joint statement with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the Vancouver organizing committee said the decision would save a $10-million worth of renovations to GM Place and the Pacific Coliseum.

It also means that as many as 800 additional seats will be available to spectators for each Olympic match.

Considering the circumstances, IIHF president Rene Fasel said, it makes sense to leave existing ice surfaces as they are at Vancouver's two Olympic hockey venues.

"I say it very honestly: It would be stupid to spend so much money to make this construction," he said.

Plus many of the players playing from most countries play in the NHL so there probably isn't a big advantage to the Canadian or US teams. Although it certainly hasn't hurt Canada tonight (7-0 late in the third) :cool1:

I am watching the mens skating..anyone else?? I am bewildered by the scores...

Alright Canada beat Norway 8-0, next up is Switzerland on Thursday and then they finish the round robin portion of the tournament against the United States.

GO CANADA GO

Another Silver... Womens 500 Short Track Speed Skate

Congartulations Marianne St-Gelais

Congrats to Christine Nesbitt on her GOLD medal in the 1000m long track speed skating!! :cool1:

Nesbitt's heat was so exciting to watch!
Woo hoo! We are now third in the medal standings! :cool1:
Though I must say what's even better than those winning statistics is seeing the look of pure joy on all of our medallists' faces!

Canada beat Switzerland 3-2 in a shootout and who else but Sidney Crosby scores the winning goal. The only bad part is they only got 2 points for winning past regulation, so they need to beat the United States on Sunday to win their group because they still have 1 more point, even though both have the same records.

While the gold and bronze medallists posed for pictures on the ice, Evgeni Plushenko was plotting his escape.

The Russian figure skater tugged his silver from around his neck and darted for the opposite end of the rink, where security personnel wouldn't let him out. They pointed him in another direction, where he hastily beat his retreat.

The Quad King was dethroned Thursday night in the Olympic men's figure skating competition, losing gold to American Evan Lysacek, who proved you don't need the four-revolution jump to be victorious and proving perhaps the new judging system works.

Plushenko didn't think so.

"I think we need to change the judging system because quad is quad," Plushenko said afterward, still in a visibly miffed state of disbelief. "If Olympic champion doesn't know how to jump quad, I don't know. Now it's not men's figure skating, now it's dancing. That's my point."

Japan's Daisuke Takahashi won the bronze, also sans quad.

The quad has polarized the men's figure skating field, with high-flyers such as the 27-year-old Plushenko believing you shouldn't be able to win without it. The Russian star, who won silver at the 2002 Olympics and gold in 2006 in Turin, Italy, came out of retirement at another shot at Olympic glory, but in the end, his lack of the artistic side of the sport would prove his undoing.

Plushenko did do a monstrous quad in his opening combination, but was lacking in his component scores - elements such as transition and skating skills and interpretation that skaters such as Lysacek and Canada's Patrick Chan earn high marks for.

The Russian didn't hide his bitterness in the outcome Friday, arriving 10 minutes late to the post-competition media conference and asked for permission to leave only a couple of minutes later.

"I was convinced that I won, but I suppose that Evan needed this gold medal more than I," he said stiffly. "Maybe because I already had one. It's not that bad, three Olympic medals, one gold and two silver."

Canada's Jeff Buttle, who won the world championships in 2008 without a quad, said the best skater won Friday.

"Pleasantly surprised," he told The Canadian Press. "Actually watching Plushenko skate, his jumps were a bit shaky, even though he did a nice quad-triple. But there's just not a lot of substance to his program so I'm glad that Evan was awarded (the gold). He had the full package."

Sigh. It's sad when you get these athletes, like Begg-Smith & Plushenko who feel entitled to win. And when they don't it's the judges that are at fault. What ever happened to the joy in victory? I'm glad that so far (from everything that I've seen/heard anyways) that the Canadian athletes have been gracious in their losses and thrilled with their victories.

because it's all about winning.....so sad

Ugh. I'm starting to get a little ticked at the media. Earlier I was listening to CBC radio. One announcer was doing a sports summary and having some light banter with another announcer. The first guy mentions that the "Canadian Cowboys" had had a bad day on the slopes. The other guy chimes in "so much for 'owing the podium', we're not even renting it at this point!" :headache:

This comment made me so mad! What about the medals our athletes have already earned?! Don't they count for anything? Sitting in 4th place in the medal standings in a competition that involves over 80 countries is a pretty impressive achievement IMHO. Instead of our successes, why were they focusing on our "failures"? And just because someone doesn't come home with hardware doesn't mean that they have not been successful, maybe in a personal best or representing their country with pride or even in qualifying for the Games in the first place. The judgemental, negative attitude of this broadcaster was very disappointing.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Apolo Ohno may be feted at home for his Olympic feats but he's better known in South Korea as the "king of fouls."

The American short track speed skater, who goes up against the South Koreans again when he races for a historic seventh Winter Olympics medal in Canada on Saturday, may well be the athlete South Koreans hate the most.

Online bulletin boards are plastered with posts cursing the 27-year-old.

One company once sold toilet paper emblazoned with Ohno's face: Ohno joyfully winning the gold, Ohno kissing his medal, Ohno laughing. One video game features an Ohno character you can shoot in the head, and to call something "Ohnolike" is to deride it as a dirty trick.

The bad blood goes back eight years to the Salt Lake City Olympics, where South Koreans believe Ohno stole the gold from Kim Dong-sung, who finished first in the 1500m race but was disqualified for blocking.

Ohno, then a teenager competing in his first Olympics, threw up his arms as he tried to pass Kim, as though to cry foul, a move mocked in South Korea.

As Ohno stepped up to claim his gold, his joy only sealed South Koreans' disgust for an athlete lambasted as ungracious and unsportsmanlike. Angry anti-Ohno e-mails numbering in the thousands shut down the U.S. Olympic Committee server for nine hours.

Hatred of Ohno is said to have fueled anti-American sentiment back then, and it doesn't help that his father, Yuki, was born in Japan, the nation that colonized Korea from 1910 to 1945. South Koreans try to trounce Japan as often as possible on the playing field, and Ohno is not exempt.

The animosity toward Ohno grew so heated that the entire American short track team withdrew from a World Cup event held in South Korea in 2003, citing death threats against Ohno. In 2005, the athlete traveled in South Korea, reportedly under the guard of police

Last year, with tensions appearing to simmer down, Ohno chose to make the trip for a World Cup event and was roundly booed by the crowd in the coastal city of Gangneung. And when a South Korean won gold and Ohno was disqualified, the audience roared and cheered with approval.

Ohno, older and wiser, shrugged off the booing. And he even won the crowd's grudging respect with a clean skate later in the competition, drawing applause for an undisputed gold medal finish.

South Koreans are possessive and prickly about short track speed skating, until now the country's best Winter Olympics event. The Asian nation of 49 million routinely churns out Olympic medalists in the short track, and two coaches on the U.S. short track speed skating team were born and raised in South Korea.

At these games, the South Koreans have emerged as a surprise force not only on the short track but also on the long track. South Korea has five medals so far, one of them a gold to Ohno's silver.

The traditional rivalry between Ohno and the South Koreans flared up again in that race, the 1500m. Three South Koreans were in the lead as they rounded the last turn, but two crashed out, allowing Ohno to slip across the finish line in second.

Incensed gold medalist Lee Jung-Su criticized Ohno as "too aggressive" in a post-race news conference.

"Ohno didn't deserve to stand on the same medal platform as me," he told Yonhap. "I was so enraged that it was hard for me to contain myself during the victory ceremony."

South Korean broadcaster SBS posted a clip online from the semifinal with a caption saying it shows Ohno "pushing" Lee.

"I understand that in sports, you naturally want to win. But sports competitions should be won through fair play," Jung Kyung Kim, a 21-year-old college student, said in central Seoul on Friday.

Ohno called the final a "crazy race" full of bumping and grabbing. He also admitted he had been hoping to capitalize on a South Korean mistake.

"At the end of the race, I was hoping for another disqualification, kind of like what happened in Salt Lake City," Ohno said.

Still, Ohno later offered his congratulations to Lee in a Twitter post. "Wow Koreans are strong as always," he added.

The rivals will have a chance to put their trash-talking to the test this weekend. Ohno, Lee and the two who crashed in the 1500m, Lee Ho-Suk and Sung Si-bak, will compete Saturday in Canada to qualify for the 1000m final.

If he wins, Ohno will become the most decorated American in Winter Olympics history.

But at least one blogger hopes to see him fall flat on his face: "He should fall down on the ice and have (figure skater) Kim Yu-na land on his disgusting face after she performs a triple axel."
