Canadian Magic ~ June 10, 2012

Hi All! - I'm new to Disboards, but my family will be cruising with all of you in June. I'm going to try to join the facebook page.

Welcome aboard Gina. I did approve you on the f/b page so you are free to post.

We too got our packets, actually three of them since we have three cruises booked (one is a dummy one we need to move though). It does make it a little more real.

I've been MIA for a while. My mom has been in the hospital since thanksgiving (in ICU for 16 days) and is now is a rehab facility. I spend hours a day driving back and forth. My sister and I have finally broken the week up so we are both traveling every day. But iwth Christmas in just a few days, I've not had time for anything at all (truly, I am just starting my shopping in the morning). Ugh. I so need a Disney break (and we were there three weeks ago, but the stress at home made the week not as fun as it should have been).

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas or Hanukkah. I'm sure once we get into the new year this thread will get more active.

We'll be traveling with our three children - 2 girls ages 22 and 18 and one boy age 8. I know there will be plenty for the 8 year old to do, but is there anything special that focuses on the college age kids?

Oh, and what is FE? I'm trying to figure this all out :confused3

welcome!!

how old is college age? Since I am 50+ (gads...did I really have to say that?) and STILL in college...lol....I find lots to do! That being said, yes there are many activities. The shipboard drinking age is 18, and the adult areas are open for 18+ as well. There are shows, clubs, shopping, on deck stuff, movies, sign-up activities like napkin folding, towel critters, cooking seminars (not sure about these on shorter cruises). If you search the web for "personal navigators" you can find the daily digest that DCL puts in the cabin each night to describe the next day's activities.

FE: a short bio....

outside each cabin door is a mail hook which is a fish on the classic ships (seahorse, starfish and fish on the newer ships). Years ago folks starting putting small pouches or pocketed hangings on these and exchanging small gifts to each other. This has become a very large tradition associated with the DisBoards. There is usually one person who is "keeper of the list" (me on this cruise) and that list is published for everyone to read. You keep track of the number of people or cabins and create or purchase a small item for each. Then you get to spend a couple of hours (at most) walking the halls delivering these gifts to each cabin. And each day get to check your own pouches on your "fish extender" for the gifts folks have given to you! All in all a lot of fun!

My S.O. had never been on a Disney Cruise, in Nov we took a 4 day cruise on the Dream. We had SO much fun walking the halls at 3am delivering our FE gifts and looking at all the amazing decorations on the cabin doors (you can put magnets on the door - no tape, glue, or other damaging attaching stuff). Folks are SO creative and festive! I find the FE gifts range from very simple (small candies or trinkets) to very involved I have gotten disks of photos that were photoshopped into amazing art, and personalized magnets for my cabin door. I have quite a collection of really cool magnets!!

As keeper of the list - there is a link in my signature to the list. The list is a readonly Google doc, I will have printed versions of this list available at the DisBoard meet n greet (usually done before sailaway), and I will have some on the cabin door for those who miss me at the meet. I also will ask that if folks change cabins during the check in procedure they please let me know - I will post a list on my door of the changes.

So - you in?

Cayla

Cayla,

Thanks for really explaining the Fish Extender. So many 'newbies' really don't know what it is and it's hard to put into words sometimes. I may have to copy your 'definition' for future use (as I'm the keeper of names on our Fantasy cruise next December).

I believe the drinking age on the ship is 21. Our son was 20 on our recent cruise and unable to drink (it's marked on your room key if you are 'adult' age for alcohol).

Hi All,

It looks like there is a chance for us to join you guys. I made the reservation, now to check on the flights, etc. I have to admit that we have done 6 Disney Cruises on the Wonder and the Dream, but never on the Magic. Of course all of those were Caribbean destinations, so this will be new for us. :thumbsup2

It will be myself (40), dh (44) dd (9) and ds (3). I will head over to the FB page :thumbsup2

Let see where this takes us!! :goodvibes

Welcome Raquel and family. I added you to the f/b page and the first post of this thread. If wish to partake in the Fish Extender, pm Cayla (link in her post above) your info.

no worries....I think you are right about the drinking age now that I think about it...I will edit that post :)

I know that somewhere on the Dis is a long and very good explaination of the FE - but I can never find it when I need it. :rotfl:

As a list keeper - may I suggest using Google docs? I find that it makes it very easy to let people have it in which ever format they want. I have not "shared" the document with anyone for editing ability, but viewing really makes it easy. Putting the link in my signature was also a good idea (don't ask me how I did it...it was stupid luck!)

I LOVE Google Docs. I use it a lot for studying also (making flash cards)! It's a great way to 'share' all the info with everyone no matter what type of system they are using (and I found I can pull it up on my phone, when I was buying FE gifts for our last cruise and forgot the ages of the kids).

I also wanted to let you know that on past cruises i have noticed in the navigators that they list college meets. I have never done them, im now 25, but as soon as i was 18 i have loved everything that has been offered for adults

Can't pm you - don't have enough posts yet! :confused3

there is a thread on the front page of the Dis that is specifically for folks to "make the posts" just post anything (I saw some used numbers, or letters)...otherwise just wait a bit - I will add your screen name and fist name. Once the rest of the infomation is available then I will add it! No worries, we have lots of time.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Now that we are actually in the calendar year of our cruise, it's beginning to feel more real to me!

First time Disney Cruisers here so there is a lot of excitement and planning going on!

Where is everyone coming from?
Are you flying or driving in?
Coming early or staying later?
Any plans in NYC before we get onboard?

Where is everyone coming from? We are from central Virginia.
Are you flying or driving in? We are actually taking the train into Penn Station
Coming early or staying later? We are coming in on Friday before the cruise and leaving the day we get back to NYC
Any plans in NYC before we get onboard? Doing the tourist thing as quick as we can, definitely hope to catch a show and find a couple of great restaurants!

Where is everyone coming from? Delaware (about 2 hours to NYC)
Are you flying or driving in? we'll be driving
Coming early or staying later? we may come a day early to avoid any possible delays
Any plans in NYC before we get onboard? since we are doing this trip as cheaply as possible, no plans right now

Where is everyone coming from? North Carolina
Are you flying or driving in? Flying in on Saturday
Coming early or staying later? Coming in a day early and then we are booked on the 2 day New York Cruise after this one, then will head home on Sunday.
Any plans in NYC before we get onboard? Will probably do something on Saturday.
