Wandering in from the community board. We are heading for Europe next week and staying with various different family and friends for 3 to 4 days each. I am looking for uniquely Canadian hostess gifts that are non-liquid and not really large as we are only taking carry-on.

So far maple syrup candies and brown sugar maple leaf shapes are all I have found. Any ideas for something that they would really appreciate but under $30, this is suppose to be a budget trip.

TIA
Cindy

I stayed with a German family a few years back, and I brought some books with tons of pictures of our area, and a calendar. I think the book was on Atlantic Canada, and then the calendar was specifically PEI. They loved having the chance to look through and see what it looked like here. I also brought some family pictures to show them (I was not travelling with my family obviously) and they REALLY looked at them-not just being curteous and looked for 2 seconds, I mean studied the pictures for a few minutes. That's what worked for my family. I think I bought a Canada pin or something like that too.

canada umbrella hats from the dollar store! Just kidding. Maybe not. I think the pictures and calanders are a good idea. maybe some of the music?

Music, that's a great idea too! Some local artists would probably be appreciated, and seeing as how the OP (I think) is from Ottawa, any national artis might work too, lol.

Laura Secord chocolates! (if they make it that far!) yummy!

I took maple syrup candies, chocolate in the shape of a maple leaf, and hard cover picture books featuring the city I'm from.

I'd pack a nice book of photos of Canada (it's so diverse from coast to coast). How about come coffee crisp chocolate bars and smarties. Ask your local mayors office if they have some pens and pins that you can have (usually free), maybe you could even find some Canada t-shirts? maybe a peice of inuit art. I find people love things like handmade soap etc.
Hope that helps
Holly

They have a lot of Canada things at the dollar store now. Even Walmart and Zellers have a lot of Canada things.

I don't think you will get the syrup on the plane though it is considered a liquid I would think.... oops sorry didn't see candy behind the maple.

I remember when my Nephew went a few years ago they wanted his jeans.:lmao: Guess they were hard to get over there.
