Canadian DISer's Book Club - October 2008

Hi All ~ I thought it would be fun to start a Canadian DISer's Book Club.

We can post the books we are reading now, or have recently read, or look forward to reading on a monthly basis.

Right now, I am reading "PAGAN CHRIST" by Tom Harpur.

Tom Harpur was an Anglican priest and now writes for the Toronto Star. PAGAN CHRIST is about his research into the true origins of Bible stories. I've just started reading it today, but so far it's pretty good.

What are you reading?

Sounds like a good read... but it takes me forever to read a book. When I was a kid I could finish off a book in days. Now, I read when i go to bed... and if I last more than 3-4 pages it's amazing.

Please provide a review when your done (and anyone else who starts reading this).

I'd like to read The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and wonder if anyone else is planning to read it? I'd also like to reread The Secret Life of Bees before the movie comes out.

I got sucked in to the Stephanie Meyer series (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse etc). I REALLY enjoyed them!! Definately not a hard or indepth read, but great character development and a very interesting story - I found that I couldn't wait to find out what happens!

Just read A New Earth and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

Really loved The Power of Now.

I'm nearing the end of World Without End by Ken Follett. I've really enjoyed it, as I did The Pillars of the Earth.

DutchsMommy - I have Twilight on reserve at our local library. I'm looking forward to reading the series!

My DD got me to read this series and I too really enjoyed it..if you like it there is another series she has that I read called "THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS trilogy by Cassandra Clare..

Can't believe I am enjoying "teen books" so much.....

I have bought the latest Nora Roberts trilogy for my cruise....

I just finished reading the new Kathy Reich book Devil Bones. It was really good. The thing about her books are they are so much better than the TV Series Bones (which I do love). But the humor in the books is so much more witty.

I just finished reading the second book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson about Peter Pan and Tink!! The first book is called, "Peter and The Star Catchers". It was really cool to have this whole new take on how Peter and Tinker Belle came to be. It is a book geared towards the younger set, but still very worthwhile to read.

The one I just finished is called "Peter and The Shadow Thieves". This one really kept my attention and had me cheering for the good guys. According to Dave Barry's website there is a fourth book pending. The third, which I have yet to read, is called "Peter and the Secret of Rundoon".

I think Disney fans would enjoy these books, regardless of your age.

I am going to start the "Dark Materials" trilogy next. The first book is "The Golden Compass" which was put out as a movie not too long ago. Has anyone read this yet?

I have to jump on board this thread. Right now I'm reading Stone Heart by Luanne Rice. I'm also thinking about reading the Twilight series since I've heard a lot about it. Funny thing though - I only found out about the series last month when her latest book came out. Not sure what rock I've been living under not to hear about it!!!

I've just started reading Kathy's books as well (love the show!!!), am halfway through Cross Bones and have the next two on loan from the library to keep going.
My daughter just finished Twilight and has started on New Moon - I will be reading those as well.
I have Brisingr, the third after Eragon and Eldest to read on my trip in 31 short days!!!
I find it so odd that of only a few posts, everyone is reading the same things I have or am reading! Go DIS!!

The Nora Roberts, is that the Hollow trilogy w/ the three guys? I have read books 1 & 2, can't wait for the third.

When we went to the Caribbean Beach for the first time in '04, one of my fondest memories was reading Blue Dahlia by the resort pool. My first Nora Roberts. I loved that trilogy.

I've read the first Twilight book and bought the second on our latest trip but haven't started it yet. I'm still rereading my Passporter and my Imagineering guides. Don't want to let go of that vacation magic....

Another set my DD has for me to read...she says they are really good...

I think unless you have a teen you may not have heard about them....but they are very good! My DD is counting the days 'til the movie comes out in November.....she found out about them this summer at Hockey Camp....

I absolutely LOVE Nora Roberts Yes the Hollow Man -Sign of Seven Trilogy is the series I just bought..I am saving them for my trip...did you enjoy them? I love her great character development and expecially love her fantasy type books....LOVED the Dahlia series too...

I also like murder mystery and love her J. D. Robb books.......also anything by James Patterson...

To OP this is a great thread and it is amazing as someone else said how many of us are reading same stuff .....

Maggie, YES, that's the trilogy! I think the Blue Dahlia series will always be my fave sentimentally. But the Hollow is good too.

Laugh out loud (at times snorting) esp when Grandma is involved.

All time best authors for me are Elizabeth Berg (Range of Motion), Alice Hoffman (Practical Magic - her books are magic, the movie was a let down) and Anne Tyler (Saint Maybe or Patchwork Planet).

I;ve read the Golden Compass - quite good, a bit hard to follow in the beginning. Much better than the movie - and makes sense in the end, which I found the movie didn't (I saw the movie before I read the book and didn't find the movie put all the pieces together well).

Thanks, that is good to know. I have not seen the movie yet and know I will hold off until after I read the book. The only movies I have really enjoyed made from a book(s) is the Harry Potter set, although the books are still way better than the movies. The movies are great though. Okay, now I want to re-read HP!!

I am a James Patterson fan to. Through out the summer I read all of his Alex Cross books, except the last tow. I can't find them yet. I never enjoyed his other books as much, the ones he co-authored with several other writers. I guess it shows their style too much.

Nora Roberts is a fave to. I loved the Blue Dhalia trilogy as well, but my fave was the Sun, Moon and Stars one from a few years ago. Takes place in Ireland. Really, really good.

I also love her individual books. I think my favorite is The Three Fates and The Reef. She is a fantastic writer.

An earlier poster asked about The Story of Edgar Sawtelle ( I think that is the name). Has anyone read it yet? It is the Oprah book club choice and it does look good. I am interested in some other opinions of that one.

Haven't been able to read as much this summer as we have ust adopted a very busy two year old but I finished up the Memory Keepers Daughter and the Kiterunner. The Kiterunner was amazing. The movie wasn't as good but still enjoyable.
