I can't believe Alaskan cruises were 2.5 times HIGHER on
DCL than the competition a few summers ago.
How much pixie dust can one snort? DCL has definitely created a unique niche to sustain the demand.
It really depends on the number of people cruising from my experience looking. I travel with my 15 year old and 10 year old. Some cruise lines are more expensive per person if you add a third person than if you just travel with two. Princess is the only line I've seen give an automatic discount for the third person like DCL does.
Since you mention Alaska specifically here are some totals for us based on the cheapest round trip sailing (because we are flexible with dates):
DCL Sept 4, 7 Nights, Standard Inside: $4589
NCL Aug 13, 7 Nights, Family Inside: $3108; Sep 4: $4180
Celebrity Aug 26, 7 Nights, Oceanview (no three person inside staterooms available): $4497
HAL Aug 21, 7 Nights, Interior: $4010
Princess Sep 3, 7 Nights, Interior: $2627
The only one that is half the price is Princess. However, given what their inside stateroom looks like with three people, there is no way we could make it work. For me the others are close enough in price that I'd choose DCL every time due to kid's clubs, no casino, etc.
Princess inside configuration for up to 4 people. With my older DD coming in at 2am there is no way!
