Hey Everyone,

Does anyone have any experience taking a car seat from Canada on a flight with a US air carrier? We are flying from Edmonton, Alberta to Orlando with our 3 kids and we have purchased a seat for our youngest - 20 months - and plan on bringing his car seat on the plane with us. Now I hear we may not be able to unless it says "this car seat approved for air travel" or somehting to that effect. I have 3 car seats, all manufactured in the US, but sold and used in Canada and none of them say this.

I called the airport and they said they don't know, we are trying ot track down the right person at the airline (Delta), but my concern is what if they say yes, but the person we are dealing with at the gate doesn't know the rules for Canadian car seats.

We fly out of Edmonton, but also stop in Salt Lake City to change planes, and on the return we change in Atlanta and Salt Lake City (yes, damn Delta and all their scheduling changes). ANyone have any experience, info they can share? Navigating Transport Canada's site is no fun either.

TIA

ooh, very good question...

i'm travelling with 2 small ones in a couple of weeks and am planning on bringing both their car seats on board with us. we're flying air tran out of bufffalo. i've purchased seats for both of them and will be more than pissed if i get turned away at the gate.

can't wait to see what others have to say...

Calling an airport will not help as each airline has their own policy (based on FAA regulations). This link may give you some info. regarding Delta's.

Thanks Calgarygary, I have read all of the info on Delta's site and none of my car seats have that wording on them, and I have yet to find one that does - even though manufactured in the US. My hubby talked to Delta and they said the sticker that is on it from Transport Canada tells by its code whether it can be used. This TC sticker is a white circle, writing in red, with some kind of code inside a Maple Leaf. Mine have J80 or J74, but I can't find corasponding info on TC website, so I will have to call tomorrow - government hours :-)

This is so confusing :confused3

I just want to be armed with info so I can state my case and get that car seat on, it is the only thing that might keep DS happy for 6.5 hours of flying.

I'll keep you all updated, if anyone else can help please let us know.

This pops up a lot, this was my reply to another post a few months ago, hope it helps you some.:)

"I found this info from Transport Canada:

Labelling Requirements - restraint systems which are manufactured or sold in Canada must be affixed with a Statement of Compliance label which states that the system has been certified to CMVSS 213 or 213.1 and indicate the date of manufacture as being after January 1, 1981.

Seats manufactured to US standards between January 1, 1981, and February 25, 1985, must bear the label: "This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards."

Seats manufactured to US standards on or after February 26, 1985, must bear two labels:

"This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards"; and

"THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" in red lettering.
In the United States, regulations require a separate label certifying the device for use in aircraft, as American manufacturers are only required to conduct an inversion test if the manufacturer wants to certify the device for aircraft use. Canadian manufactured child restraint systems do not require a separate label stating certification for use in aircraft as it is a requirement for all devices to successfully complete an inversion test

Here is the link http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/co...ars/AC0177.htm

I printed it out and put it on the back of the seat where the manual goes, just in case anyone questioned it."

We've done it and had no problems. Although I subesquently found that its easier to just check the stupid things and use the seatbelts. My Tasmanian devil was fine just strapped in (he was 25 months at the time) and napped a lot easier when he could cuddle up against me.

I have used my car seat many times on SW and no one has ever looked at it to see any label. I wouldn't stress too much.

We travelled on Airtran out of Rochester in May. Our seat was checked at the boarding gate and was not allowed since it did not specifically state that it was approved for use on an aircraft.
