Can your children write in cursive?

So if learning cursive makes you smart maybe we should all study calligraphy and then we will turn into geniuses. .

Yes, because that's a reasonable conclusion to draw from what I posted. What an excellent grasp of logic. Clearly you don't need cursive!!!

Sorry but this sounds like a study that set out to prove cursive had some value.

Did you read the study and find some issue with the methodology they used, or are you generally so dismissive of academic research? All studies start with a hypothesis which they set out to prove or disprove in accordance with the evidence, that's how the scientific method works. If you found some flaw in their methodology, I'd love to hear more.

Had this conversation with my DD12 (7th grader) the other night after seeing this thread title:

Me - I know you don't use cursive in school anymore but you should practice it once or twice/week so you don't forget how to use it. Just write a note to yourself or use it in your journal.
DD - Why? Everyone types everything now anyway.
Me - When you are older and have kids and you need to send in a note to school are you going to print it out like a 1st grader?
DD - By then even the teachers won't know how to read cursive.

I saw this thread when it first started and didn't respond, but now I feel I have to. I work in a school. As I was helping out in one of the offices with my back turned to the secretaries I heard, "What does this say? I don't read cursive too good." One of our younger, twenty-something secretaries was asking this of the older one. The note was from our assistant principal. It wasn't illegible or messy. She just couldn't read it because it was in cursive! I really was shocked.
I came home and told my three kids that we would be working on their cursive. I don't want them to ever have to say that to a colleague or boss. They are currently in 8th and 5th grade and were BRIEFLY taught the fundamentals of cursive but it wasn't put into practice very much. I know that that are in no way as proficient in reading or writing in cursive the way I was at their ages. I'm 39 and Sister Leonette made sure we knew our stuff! :goodvibes

Our school used to teach in second grade when my kids were younger (they are in college now). In past 3-4 years they changed it to third grade. Anymore you can see kids just not doing it because everything is on a computer or Ipad at school and they just don't want to write. They want to take tests on the Ipad, write papers on the Ipad and do everything but write by hand. They get really mad when the mean old sub comes and makes them write things out (per teacher's lesson plans). I'm glad my kids did learn how to write in cursive. I know when I was in elementary we learned in third grade.
