I am thinking of buying into DVC and have a couple of questions. If you buy at one place say OKW can you use your points at BWV instead? If so how is that done? Also can you only use your points at Disney or are there other places, say Hawaii where you can stay? Thanks for the help
Sure you can. Check the FAQs on this site. Short version ... it's relatively painless to use points at other DVC properties, but because owners at those other properties can make reservations before you can, you aren't assured of getting exactly what you want when you want.
Other trips to Hawaii or whatever are a little trickier, and old hands will tell you that it's not the most economical use of your points, but my feeling is that's what I got 'em for to begin with ... prepaid vacations.
Here's the official DVC website, if you just want the basics and would like to see what else is available to you:
You can use your points at other WDW DVC. At the smaller resorts like Baordwalk, Beach club and Wilderness Lodge you really need to book near the 7 month window if aviailable. These resorts are getting more difficult to book as more members are added. You can use your points outside of the DVC resorts but it is usually not a good value. Typically Disney values those points at around $7.5 per point versus $11 + at the WDW DVC resorts. If you are thinking of using your points outside of the WDW DVC resorts I would compare cash prices and discounted rates available to the general public before making a decision.
When you go to that site, order the free Disney Vacation Club DVD. Many of your questions will be answered, and you'll probably want to join immediately.
