Can you split a 2 br after it is booked?

Hi all,

Had a conversation tonight with my brother about coming with us to Disney next year and getting a 2 br which would hold all of us. Without boring you with the details of kids school schedules etc, he asked if I can book the 2 br, and if they can't come (which they would know in plenty of time for me to cancel) can just cancel the studio portion and turn it into a 1 br. 2 BR would just be a waste of points for our family of 4.

Since we are thinking about going at a time of year that is pretty much in demand, this is an important thing to know.

Another question I have is would DVC allow me to split the unit, pay the difference in points (since a studio and 1 br separately are more points than just the 2 br) and rent the studio out?

In case it matters, we own at BW and were planning on trying to get a 2 bedroom standard at the 11 month mark. That's another reason why it is important.

Thanks for your help!

It would be treated as a cancellation and rebook. You can't just drop the studio. If there is still availability, it would not be a problem but if there's a waitlist you would have to get on it to rebook as a 1 bedroom.

If you book it separately as a 1 bedroom and studio, there's a chance that the room would not be connected or even close to each other.

Not all 2BR have a lock-off studio unit, so you would definitely have to rebook unless you want to take the chance of sharing a 2BR with whomever you rented to.

That's true, however the OP said they are staying at the BWV. ALL of the 2 bedroom units are lock offs - there are no dedicated 2 bedroom units there.

FWIW, I agree with DebbieB.

If I were in the OP's situation, I'd book the 1 bedroom and studio separately and request that they be near each other. IMHO, that is less risky than getting stuck with a 2 bedorom I don't need and having to cancel and rebook - especially since I wanted a standard view.

Best wishes -

If your brother does have to back out, you may be in a crunch to rent the studio or possible you're points may go into holding if less than 30 days out. Since the 1BR + studio combo would require more points, I wouln't hesitate asking your brother to pay $10-$12 per point for the difference.

To answer your question directly, no, you can't split up a two BR once booked. However, an option, if you have the points without having to borrow, I'd also book a one bedroom at the same time and then cancel whichever one you find you don't need. I have booked a one BR and a studio because they stated that they didn't have anymore "2 BR's" available, and then when I got there, the 1 BR and studio were right next door with the connecting door, and I still had to pay the higher price of a 1 BR and Studio instead of a two BR. That stung a bit, but I was happy to have all of us together.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your help! I think I will have to borrow if I book a 2 br and a 1 br with the intent of cancelling one. And I don't want to do that. I will check the numbers though just to be sure. But it did cross my mind.

Thanks to everyone who answered. I may have to go with the 1 br + studio booking route. I can then always have them waitlist me for the 2 br standard. Who knows? Magical things happen at Disney. :wizard:

If you are trying to get the standard view, you may have great difficulty in this. Remember weekends are far more points and thus tend to be much more easily available. Maybe you could book as many days as possible for the second unit as a back up. You could also borrow then bank other points if needed later. There's no perfect solution unless you have enough points to schedule both.

Thanks Dean. You raised a good point that this newbie never considered -- that I can borrow points, but then bank "other" points if we change our plans. We would only need 20 or so points to do this so that may work out.

One question though, when you borrow points, do those borrowed poitns get dedicated to one specific reservation? So if I book a 2 br standard, and a 1 BR standard, then borrow 20 points, do I have to designate which reservation the borrowed points go to? Or are the borrowed points used first?

Thanks, as always for your wisdom! :love2:

Yes, they will be reservation specific so put them in your most likely scenario. However, you can usually rebook a single day to "swap" the borrowed points for current use year points which you can then bank subject to the banking deadlines. And even though they are not supposed to just sub the points without canceling and rebooking, I bet you can get them to do that in this situation if you word your request appropriately.

Dean, if I were to do that, who would I call. Do I just call member services or accounting? Thanks!

All banking, borrowing, reservation transactions are handled by MS.

Good luck!
