Can you recommend a furnace/ac unit?

Another vote for NOT buying a Goodman.
Never, ever again. As I sit here waiting to see if it will die again..............Only seven years old and cannot tell you how much money we have spent having this thing repaired. We live in New England, really run when your house is 50 degrees because the furnace is broken again.
NEVER, EVER AGAIN.

Thanks for this thread. Very informative! We just bought our first house and the furnace is a major concern for me. It's orginal ... 35 years old!! I am getting someone in to clean it and inspect it for me. We are hoping to get one more season out of it because we'd rather not fork over $5K that we don't really have right now before Christmas. We also have a gas stove in the family room that heats the whole downstairs very well so we have taken the pressure off the furnace since we use that primarily to warm the downstairs.

Yes I got a new programmable thermosat. Just a middle of the road one $60. The installers tried to get me to buy theirs for $375 - no thanks.

$375! Yeah, We get price sheets with these thermostats on them but we usually pass for our customers & are always on the lookout for excellent, but cheap, t'stats. You'll get back your $60.00, though, pretty quick from the energy savings.

The wood stove is very nice for you because the trick to having a 35 yr old unit is if it breaks on a super cold day, no one will be able to install a new or fix your furnace for days, leaving you literally in the cold. On those super cold days we have to make it our priority to get to those with medical issues, the elderly, etc, and it sometimes takes us days to get to all the other people. Also, you'll pay premium money to have it fixed. Our emergency service is double what our normal prices are. It has to be because our service techs work 70-90 hours those weeks and we pay them well for such dedication. So if your wood stove truly does heat sufficiently I think your plan is fine. But don't wait two years or you'll miss out on the stimulous package money. It expires Dec. 2010.
