Can you please describe park opening at MK?

I am trying to understand what happens at the park opening and rope drop at MK so I know what to expect. I know that at 8:48 am (assuming a 9:00 am opening) that the characters come on the train and that there is some sort of ceremony, dance number, etc.

The UG described CM's holding a huge rope across main street and basically walking you "briskly" to the hub or something like that. Is that true?

Also, can you actually get "in" to the Main Street area before 9:00 am or does the security stuff begin at 9:00 am? I can't imagine the horde between the turnstiles and railroad if you can get in but go no farther than the railroad.

If you are willing to describe what happens, it would help me a lot! Thanks!

Here's what happened in May when we were there for EMH. They let you through the turnstiles and you are stopped before you go under the railroad tracks (in front of the big Mickey emblem in flowers) That day the Mainstreet Fire Chief comes out and welcomes everyone to Magic Kingdom. Then a bunch of singers/dancers come out and break into song. I think the family chosen to open the park is there too. Everyone is on the platform up at the train station. Then the characters come in on the train to welcome everyone and they finish the song and away you go into the park !

Question: How do you know about the Extra Magic Hours? I am looking at the WDW website and it says the days for Extra Magic Hours but how do you know if it is for morning or evening?

If you are looking at the park hours calendar you can just click on where it says extra magic hours (inside a day "square") and it will take you to a page that breaks it down.

You can get into the MK early if you have a character breakfast scheduled at Crystal Palace or at CRT. If the park is opening at 9, it must be for earlier than 9. We were right next to where the check you in, on the right hand side and a family was trying to get in at about 8:45 for a 9:05 reservation. They would not let them through because it was after 9. I felt so bad for that family because they probably ended up being late when they were trying to get there early.

i would love to describe it but its undescribable!!!!!! Call me a dork but when i saw the opening for the first time in march i had tears in my eyes!!! everyone HAS to see it!
