Can you OD on Sudafed?

I think I may have accidentally taken Sudafed twice. I am not certain. All I know is that I took some about 30 minutes ago and I feel really weird. I've been taking it the last two or three days for a sinus thing and I'm afraid I may have taken it earlier and forgotten.

What to do?

Read the label. I wouldn't be TOO worried, sudafed isn't particularly strong.

I'd call poison control to be safe if you want 1-800-222-1222, but if anything, it's just going to make you passout for several hours LOL. I think sudafed makes you drowsy...

I thought it was the opposite; that it made you have difficulty sleeping/restlessness :confused3

Personally, I think you'll be fine. Call poison control, just to be sure.

I was packing for my most recent WDW trip and was putting some unisom (over the counter sleep aid) in my bag, and I was taking vitamins at the same time, and I inadvertantly took 5 unisom!!! I thought I had a handful of vitamins and supplements in my hand, and I was kind of scrambled with the packing, rushing around and all...and so I panicked! I tried to make myself throw up but I couldn't. I then called poison control, and they kind of freaked me out by saying, "Is there anyone there that can drive you to the E.R.?" That's what they told me to do. At that moment, my DH walked in. I told him what happened, and we left to the ER. I was there for a few hours and it cost me several hundred dollars to be told, "No big deal, you'll be fine."

Just letting you know you are not the only one! Feel better soon!

Maybe if you took the whole package, but a double dose should be fine. I suffered horrible seasonal allergies as a child, and sudafed was all there was. I went to visit my gf in the country, and literally couldn't leave the house. I remember telling my mom I was out of sudafed, and she almost had a heart attack, because I had enough for weeks, and I was only there a few days :confused3 . I was popping them every 1/2 hour or so, and ran out:eek: . It's such a mild medication - pregnant women can take it, and a few years ago, when my kids were babies, I gave them sudafed.

You should be fine.. Most over-the counter stuff is a minimal dosage of prescription strength.. Sometimes i have a tendency to take extra doses than "recommended" if I am severely stuffed up. Anything over the counter has a much larger latitude for safety, just for those instances... And yes, it can make people react differently. Benadryl can do the same thing..

Hope your congestion feels better soon!!!

I accidentally took too much Sudafed last year and ended up "tweaking" all night, like I'd had a gallon or two of coffee. Other than that, no lasting side effects, besides being VERY careful whenever I take it now! Try teaching 8th graders while having a sinus infection after having a night of twitching and shakes. Not pretty. Should've taken a sick day!

I have to ask...how long did you sleep? Did it knock you out??

When my son was 3 he got into some sudafed. I had no idea if or how many he'd taken. I knew it was less than 5. I called poison control and they said he would be fine as long as it was less than 12. He said we'd know if he took them bc he'd get really hyper. Well a few minutes later he started running around the house and did so for hours. So I know he took some.

So if a 3 yo can have 12, I'm sure and adult can have a lot more. You should be fine. :-)

Sudafed contains suphedrine, which is an upper, it won't make you sleepy, it will make you stay awake. But you should be fine, if it were the whole package I would be concerned but other than being awake a little longer you should be fine, but it is probably why you are a little jittery.

Did you take psedoephedrine or phenylepherine, the new-and-doesn't-work Sudafed? Either way, you'll be fine. Worst case scenario, you'll be a little tweaky.

I think that taking too much Sudafed might raise your blood pressure. You might want to ask about that if you have high blood pressure if you call the poison control center or the pharmacy. I hope you feel better soon!

Well, one reason I freaked out was that I do take Unisom regularly ( a few times a month.) Once, I thought to myself, "Hmmm, if one Unisom works pretty well, the TWO will work doubly well!"

I was WRONG...it had the opposite effect. Two Unisom made my heart beat fast, my pulse rush, I was up all night. I was afraid FIVE was going to kill me, literally.

Honestly, it didn't do much, but I DID NOT sleep well that night. Weird.

Thanks, I asked because I have a lot of trouble sleeping (I fall asleep but I'm up in about 3 hours and can't go back to sleep). I've tried Unisom, but it makes it worse. About once every two months I can take one and sleep great but the next night....I am hyper. I've talked to my doctor about it but all she tells me to do is exercise more. Then I'll sleep better. That doesn't help either. She won't even consider a prescription night aid.

While you can OD on Sudafed I highly doubt a double dose its going to do it.

Most people I see at work with Sudafed OD's took at least the whole box.

I feel your pain! I have "issues" sleeping also. At one point I was taking Unisom almost every night, but then it stopped working and actually did what you are describing. Now I take it about once a week, just to get one full night's sleep.

I have taken ambien before, and it really knocks me out. I am not so sure I reccommend it, though.

It really stinks to be sleep deprived. I hope it is just a "phase" we are going through!:confused3
