can you make DVD's from a video

we have a ton of videos...disney movies, other clasics like Willie Wonka, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, SOund of Music etc..my kids watch them all of the time...
we are getting a new minivan that comes with a DVD player/pop down TV screen..we do not own a DVD and the car does not have an option to get a VCR player instead..
Is there technology out there to save me a ton of money to convert these videos to DVD...want to invent it for me?

I've seen stuff from Tiger Direct that will burn videos onto a DVD directly. Most Sony computers have Click to DVD, which will burn from an analog source (camera, VCR) to a DVD.

Make sure that the DVD media you're buying to burn to is compatible with your DVD player. There are DVD+Rs, DVD-Rs, DVD+RWs, and DVD-RWs. I think most players handle DVD-Rs (I know the Playstation 2 only reads DVD-Rs), but you need to check. There is no standardization in DVD formats. It's all format wars, Luke.

Oh, and watch out for copyrights. If you're burning it for yourself, I don't think the FBI is going to be knocking on your door. If you're going to burn them onto DVD and sell them on NYC streets, then that's another matter!

But, I do know that the technology exists and now i will seek out local support to perhaps get a favorite or 2 transfered over while we begin our DVD investment for the future...which of course will come as soon as I get everything we want on DVD they will make up a new medium!!!

Transferring costs about $20, most services wouldn't copy commercial copies of movies and maybe not even copyrighted ones.

My DH does have a DVD writer and has been using it for other things, I'd like to get our home movies onto DVD and would love to know which video transfer system works best. Once you transfer a digital copy of the movie to your computer if you have a DVD writer you can put it there.
