Since our plane doesnt leave till after 6pm we dont really need to rush off the ship. Would it be beneficial at all to wait? Or would we still be in a crowd, just at the back?

The only real rush is the initial crowd right after the ship is cleared by customs. It is usually between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. They do request that you are out of your state room by 8:00 AM and off the ship by 9:00 AM so that they may get the ship ready for the boarding of the next guests, typically at 12:15 PM. So, take your time.

We have stayed on the ship as long as possible when we've had a late flight, and it hasn't been crowded to get off at all. The only thing that was bad was MCO, but since your flight is so late, that would be cleared out by then anyway. Only caution is that if you are literally one of the last, and are using Disney transfers & are on the last bus, the wait can be a while as they wait for everyone.

It may depend on the cruise, etc...we have some friends that just got back and they were hoping to stay on a little longer for the same reasons, but they were asked to get off with everyone else (by 9:30)--so they could start the cleaning, etc. for the next set of cruisers--who sometimes can board by noon or so. I think they must want people off to allow them the time needed to prepare the ship to depart again within a few hours. There is plenty to do around town though to kill time--even the airport is one of the nicest we have been in with lots of great Disney stores, etc.
