Can you drive a "stick"?

I love driving a stick. Give me control and response over convenience any day. :car:

Yes! I much prefer them, more fun to drive IMO. :car:

But I don't drive one now, we have a mini-van, and our other car is an automatic also. The Honda I used to drive now belongs to DD in college.

We made her learn on a stick, and now DS 16 had to spend some time in that car as well, although he mainly drives the other car which is an automatic.

I believe everyone should at least learn. It's a great skill to have. :sunny:

I can, learned when I was a teenager, but don't drive one now. DH (39) learned about two years ago when we had a rental car.

Yep. I learned how to drive a stick shift as a teenager and drove one for years. I love my automatic so I do not think I will be going back to a stick shift anytime soon.

I tend to fall off the sticks. I find the branch much easier to control.

I CANNOT drive a stick. I however CAN drive a car that has a manual transmission or an automatic transmission.

I do believe that Samantha drove something similar to a stick. It is aka "a broom." :car:

I have owned only stick shifts - I far prefer them to automatics. I had two Honda Accords, both sticks, and I love em! I orginally got a stick shift since my Dad only drives stick and encouraged it, and I had a wonderful female teacher in High School who had a cool car with a stick (and I would always walk by it in the parking lot when walking to school and admire that car!). I think us females who drive sticks are an awesome bunch!! :teeth:

I think my next car will be stick, if it's available. I think sticks are far better on snow, as I feel more in control. :)

My old VW Bug was great in the snow! Just chugged right through whatever was on the ground.

I can, I had to learn to drive on one! But I currently drive an automatic.

Yes I can. The first car (well, it was a small pickup truck) was a stick. I prefer an automatic, except on those great summer days when it's not too hot. Then I drive my DH's stick shift convertible with the top down!

No that is why I can not go on The Amazing Race. Neither Dh or I know how to. We would be eliminited very quick it seems all the cars overseas are stick. :sad2:

OMG you are so right I watch and laugh at them trying to drive those cars. I learned on an ex's truck but my first car 1989 Escort had a stick but no power steering. Boy I had some great arms when I had that car.

This past spring while car shopping I test drove a few stick shifts. I really miss it, I think the next car will have one. Much better on gas and gets the same amount of power as the v6! Although the look on the salesmans face when I took off and mentioned "I hope this comes back to me its been over 10 years" was priceless!!!

I learned to drive on a stick and my first car was a stick. The car I have now is automatic. I can still drive stick though when I need to.

Yes, I can drive stick and have to when I go down to Brazil (no automatic cars there). However, when I bought a car here they didn't have teh car I wanted in an automatic and would have to order it so the salesman said that he would kick off an extra $500 off the price of the car. I just told him "Yes, I do know how to drive stick but I don't live in a 3rd world country and don't have to or want to" (I have a pretty odd sense of humor and am very good at saying things with a straight face) the salesman didn't know if I was serious or not until I couldn't hold in the laughter anymore. Needless to say, I did not get the stickshift car. They brought mine in from another state the next day.
IMO $500 bucks is not enough for me to have to change gears.

Over here 80% of all cars have manual transmissions. I drive a Convertible with a 6speed manual tranny. When I'm in the USA I always rent automatics as at your crawling speeds ;) this is sufficient, but over here on the Autobahn or when I do some serious driving on smaller countryroads I definitely prefer a stick. Without an automatic and a cruise control I would be easy prey for your highway cops as I'm used to cruising well in the three-digit-range.
And at $6 a gallon over here the better fuel effeciency of a stick is also very welcome.

I learned on a Carma Ghia as a teenager. My father said if I wanted to drive that I had to learn to drive a stick!

No, but my car has the ability to do both. Does that count?:teeth: ;) :bitelip:

ONe of ours does too and every other car in the house is stick as well. I had an argument with the repair shop at Sears a few years back because they were installing new tires and told me it would take about an hour. I come back an hour later and it wasn't done because "no one knew how to drive a stick into the garage". I said well let me do your job for you since I found it hard to believe that the 15 guys in the shop at the time all only drove automatic. The people in line with me were laughing at them but I was quite mad that I had to wait another hour. :car:

You know- that story STILL makes me mad! :furious:

Over here in the UK sticks shifts are more common than automatics so the majority of us drive them. All my cars have been stick shifts, the only time I have driven automatics is abroad (driving an automatic on the 'wrong' side of the road is certainly an experience the first time you do it, especially when you have to cross 5 lanes of traffic in Las Vegas!!)
