We have four days and park hoppers. If we decide to change our plans, and there is still room at a given park, can we change our park reservation for the first park on the day we're going to be visiting it? Thanks!

Technically you can't CHANGE the reservation, but you can cancel your reservation and book a new one, which is basically the same thing.

If there are park reservations available you can cancel one and then make a new one. As mentioned above, there is no way to modify one. Even calling Disney they must cancel and book a new one.
The risk is as you cancel one, the next one may be taken as well as the one you just cancelled. Outside of HS, most of the parks have not been at capacity for park reservations.

so no problem if I wake up at 8am and its pouring rain and we decide not to go to the park on that day - I just cancel that day and rebook for another day? I'm not clear if the reservation is tied to my park passes in my band and want to ensure it doesn't "eat" a day if we decide last minute not to go to a park. Also if i forget to cancel the reservation is there any penalty?? Thanks

Right.

Nothing is tied to your band. The thing that ties everything together is your My Disney Experience profile. That's why you can have ten different Magic Bands, your phone, and a plastic room key and they'll all work interchangeably.

A reservation is "tied" to your passes only in the sense that you need to HAVE passes in order to make the reservation in the first place. A park reservation does not consume a day of park entitlement.

Also if i forget to cancel the reservation is there any penalty?? Thanks
I believe the only program that has a no-show penalty is the Disneyland Magic Key.
