Can you be fat and healthy.

Being overweight or obese, in and of itself, is a risk factor for major diseases like cardiovascular disease and stroke (the #1 and #3 leading causes of death in U.S., respectively). That is regardless of other comorbidities like high cholesterol, BP, diabetes, etc.

I saw this on CNN.com this morning and thought of this thread:

I have no comment, but I had to share because I know this will drive some of you insane.

It's a misleading headline. It just says they live longer than very thin people, which I don't think anyone will say is healthy either. It doesn't give you all the results, where did people who are of normal weight fall?

From another article:

Men of regular weight (with a BMI of between 18.5 and 25) at age 40 lived for an average of 39.94 more years, while those who were overweight (BMI of between 25 and 30) at age 40 lived a further 41.64 years.

Women of regular weight lived on average a further 47.97 years, compared with overweight women, who lived another 48.05 years.

Obese men and women (BMI of 30 or more) lived a further 39.41 and 46.02 years, respectively. But thin men (BMI of less than 18.5) were on average expected to live 34.54 more years, and thin women another 41.79 years.

Chubby doesn't mean morbidly obese. For the last 9 years, I have watched my MIL yo-yo her weight. She does eat fairly healthy but she is still eating more calories than she burns in a day. Her knees hurt constantly. She is always out of breath, has high blood pressure and gets tired quickly. It hurts DH to watch her. He fears her early death. He never says this but I know it's what he is thinking.

Her doctor has told her that if she doesn't make some lifestyle changes she will have a heart attack. Does this affect her? No she is only thinking of how much money it would cost her to change her eating habits, join a gym, use different medications. The light hasn't gone off in her head. It most likely never will.

There was an excellent special called "Eat to Save your life" by Jamie Oliver. They did an autopsy on what an obese person looks like. The fat had crushed the diaphragm up into the lungs. The other internal organs were completely crushed. Even seeing this MIL still worries about the money cost .

These girls sound as though they are the same way. The fat tissue will eventually cause a detriment to their health but ignorance is bliss.

Other people might be able to consider themselves healthy while being hugely overweight but I can't. I gained a ton of weight when I quit smoking and got put on a certain medication. My cholesterol went through the ROOF, I was winded just going up the stairs and snoreed so bad I probably had sleep apnea. I got off the med and started smoking again and lost a TON of wieght. I have since quit smoking again and am watching my weight like a hawk and still trying to lose more weight. But really getting off the med made a huge difference in my weight. Not all people are overweight due to poor lifestyle choices and laziness and lack of willpower. I was doing what was supposed to be good for my health and it caused me other kinds of health issues. I feel like I have it under control now and am aware of trying my best to live a healthy lifestyle and i hope to take off even more weight. We will see

As a very thin person (89.5 lbs. as of today) who has to fight continuously to gain so much as a pound, I did not find that article very comforting.. :(

Not "shooting the messenger" though - LOL - it just confirms what I already knew.. (Thus my earlier statement that it's equally unhealthy to be extremely underweight..)

Guess I better find something to snack on while I'm sitting here..;)

So being chubby might be good?

I think "chubby" (as in 40 lbs.) was mentioned as being okay, but I don't believe they addressed 100 lbs. overweight (which I might have missed because I skimmed it rather quickly)..:goodvibes

We can debate obesity until the cows come home but consider this: Nobody has ever gotten healthier by trying to gain 100 lbs. A whole lot of people have gotten healthier by trying to lose 100 lbs.

Sure I could name several people who are thin but live with chronic illness. My SIL probably weighs 125 lbs, but she's been a type 2 diabetic for about 10 years and is now facing insulin resistence requiring insulin injections. My brother might weigh 140(and he's 6'2") but he's drinking himself into oblivion. But for every thin person I can name i bet I can think of 5 heavy people who are strugging with chronic illnesses and their excess weight is not making things better.

Off my soapbox too. Gonna go get some broccoli.

She should be tested for LADA.
