can we talk about pizza delivery surcharges

That surcharge is for the additional cost in getting the food to your store. The food that is delivered to your local store has fuel surcharges added onto the freight bill. This is why we saw grocery prices (as well as other goods) increase over the past year or so. The cost to deliver it to the stores as increased. Fuel is slowly going down and the truckers are getting less in fuel surcharges because it is typically on a sliding scale based on the Dept of Energy National Avg. But the stores probably won't lower their prices. I know this is probably more detail than anybody wants but its what I work will all day. :flower3:

If this is true, then why are only the "delivery" customers charged this special fee. If you pick up, you don't have to pay the $2.00 surcharge. I've also been ordering Papa John's lately but the other day, I ordered one large pizza (a specialty), one small White pizza, and an order of chicken wings. After the pizza, tax, surcharge, and tip, it was $41.00.

Can't help you - we have wonderful local places, and I don't know of anyone who orders from a chain. Five minutes ago, I had 2 large (NY large) 1 topping pies delivered for $20, not including tip (I have him $4). And our prices went up with the price of flour!

One of the guys that I work with also delivers pizza. They charge a $1.00 delivery fee but it goes right to the driver, it helps them offset the cost of gas. It was easier for management to add a delivery fee than to increase their salaries.

Hmm, I grant that it has been a month or so, but last time I had delivery none of our places charge, ie Papa Johns, Pizza Hut (yuck), Breadeaux...

Our local places are SO expensive. A large 1 topping is $25 so if my whole family goes - me, DS18, DS12, and DH it is easily $65-$70 for 2 pizzas and drinks.

I looooooove me some Papa John's!! But I'm too cheap to ever have it delivered. Plus, Mondays are when you can get a large 1-topping for only $5.99 carry-out only. It's the only reason I love Mondays.

Maybe because most people assume it is a fee going to the driver when its not and don't question it. If that delivery surcharge was on my pick up order I would most certainly question it.

As I said I work in Transportation and deal with railroads and trucking companies all day long. I know fuel is high and our company has put in price increases and surcharges to our customers to pass on some of the money we are paying in fuel surcharges. Some customer accept it while others refuse. We are paying as much as 30% additional in freight cost for fuel.

Tell me about it. I just paid $30.00 for 2 large pizzas last weekend, had them delivered. I just about S^*t. No more pizza for us, we will buy store bought pizza from now on...

Pizza places have been charging for delivery (even the local ones) since I was in highschool. I know that from when we would order pizza when parents weren't home and I had to pay for it. I graduated in 1976 so delivery charges have been around for a long time. I also knew it didn't go to the driver so you tipped on top of that. Delivery charges go to the owner to help pay the drivers paycheck.

Our locally owned places don't charge for delivery and are cheaper than the chains. I'd rather support them anyway, so it's all good.

OK, now I want Pizza, but no way do I want papa johns. The sauce is way too sweet.

We were living on pizza for a while. I LOVE pizza. Unfortunately, I have something wrong with my stomach (best guess is an ulcer as everything else came back normal) and my beloved pizza makes me feel really unwell. We really like Freschetta's frozen pizza; I like it as well as the local place. The only chain here is Pizza Hut, which I don't like much. I can't get over how much pizza has gone up, though. I used to buy a frozen pizza for $3.50...now they're over $5.00. All the local pizza places have gone up in price, too, by a dollar or two a pizza at minimum.

There's a pizza place near my work that has 2 large one topping pizzas for $13, and they're GOOD. I wish that deal were available near home. I work 45 minutes away, so the pizza will be cold by the time I get it home.

I would pay a million dollars if someone WOULD deliver to our area! We don't get delivery and for an ex nyer that is unheard of!

My favorite place only has 1 size pizza...1 large cheese for $19.99. Otherwise, it's the chains. My local place doesn't deliver either. :( But I still order from them 8/10 times.

Never liked papas. Our local place does not have the surcharge.

and I would not put up with the games. Just tell me the price to get a pizza. Not the pizza price and delivery and fuel or cheese surcharges...

Some things just should be payed an appropriate amount for. Like food, and airplane tickets....

We can get a prime rib delivered for only $55. It is big enough for two to share. Including an onion loaf side dish.... Just say no!

I was going to ask the same thing..

If that is the reason given, then it appears they are lying.. If it were the truth, the increase would be across the board - pick up AND delivery..

I would no longer be doing business with them..

Maybe because most people assume it is a fee going to the driver when its not....
With respect, I think that's bs. The restaurant does pay some money to the drivers. The surcharge therefore goes to defray those costs. This is a cost that shouldn't be allocated into the menu prices for folks picking food up at the store.

We only pick up ours too. I usually try to plan it while running another errand or coming home from work since I pass right by.

Eventhough gas prices are coming down I doubt a lot of these surcharges and price increases that were added on for fuel will go away.

I also try to plan a pizza pick up when I'm on my way home from somewhere. Or I stop at BJ's to get one of their Pizzeria Uno take and bakes. I think the price on those is still $8.99 and we like that pizza.

I agree about seeing the gas prices decreasing and the food/surcharge prices staying the same or even increasing. This a a topic for another thread, but what makes me really batty is that prices have increased and product size (everything from the size of a pizza to how many Reese cups you get in a package) has decreased.

I know what you mean!!! I HATE to pay that.

For that very reason, we started going to pick up our pizzas. It's only about 2 miles. Plus I have their phone number programmed in my cell phone so I can call on my way home. :thumbsup2

I also have several pizza joints' phone numbers in my cell so I can call to pick up the pizza when I'm out running errands and can swing by the pizza place on my way home. When I have pizza coupons, I keep them right in the car so I can use them when I call.

We order pizza less often than we used to in an effort to save money, so now when we get pizza it's more of a treat than a regular occurance.
