Can we bring our luggage on DME?

In the past we have used rental cars and town car transfers. The last several years we have used Magical Express only for our return to airport since we drove up from Naples (visiting FIL). My DH is very nervous about our luggage being handled and delivered (and not lost) by anyone other than ourselves. If we are concerned, can we just go get our own luggage and bring it to the ME bus? Will everyone be o.k. with that or will that cause trouble? Thanks for any help.

Yes you may. It goes under the bus cabin.

The driver, who loads your baggage, and the bellhops at the resort who handle or store your luggage, greatly appreciate tips. Exception: You do not need to go to the room and wait for your baggage you did not get yourself to be magically delivered.

It's perfectly OK and acceptable for you to bring your checked luggage to the DME bus, for the driver to stow underneath. Please be sure to tip the driver for this service.

If you would like to try to get your husband to not unnecessarily delay you guys and if you would like to try to get him to use the automatic luggage delivery feature, you can show him the following. I cut and pasted it into my word processor, from a Disney CM who explained it all to us a few months back. I made some grammatical edits, but the info is straight from that person in-the-know and not from me:

Here's how the luggage handling works, to give you an idea of the sophistication of it all.

a) Bags are off-loaded from the aircraft. Most of the major airlines drop off yellow tagged luggage at designated drop off points where they are then picked up by a different contractor and taken to a sorting facility. These drop off points are supervised by Disney CMs.

b) Not all airlines use the drop off points. Many of the smaller ones just leave it to Disney CMs working behind the carousels pulling the yellow tagged bags off and setting them aside to be picked up and taken to the sorting facility. DME-tagged bags do not go out onto the public baggage claim carousels.

c) In addition, there are Disney CM's assigned to every airline to catch the bags that the larger airlines missed taking to the drop off point. They also check every unclaimed bag against a manifest to insure that the bags are found even if by chance the guest forgot to put on the tag or it fell off (highly unlikely).

d). All of the bags are scanned (the DME tags have barcodes) when they get to the sorting facility, again after they are put in a locked cage and again when the cage is put in a delivery truck. (3 scans so far)

e) The delivery trucks all have GPS devices and their location can be pinpointed at any time. The computer knows which cages are on which trucks, and which bags are in which cages.

f) The bags are scanned again when they arrive at the resort and again when taken to a guests room.

g) Disney is well aware of where the bags are at all times. As you can see above, each bag's tag is scanned 5 times during its journey.

h) If a bag is delayed the resort will call a central DME office at the airport to begin the process of tracking it down. DME will take the responsibilty of finding your bags for you even if it was lost by the airline and never arrived at MCO in the first place. This saves you from having to wait in line and fill out forms in your airline's baggage office.

(Eric talking now)-- In addition to all of the above, when you check in at the DME Welcome Center they ask how many bags you checked with your airline. If you checked 4 and only three are scanned by DME while still at the airport, they will search for that 4th bag.

If your husband isn't impressed by the above system, then you'll be picking up your own bags. It's certainly not a bad thing -- we all do it at every other airport in the world. But it is such a cool perk. And the way I look at it, I'm already trusting my airline to take my luggage about 1,000 miles, so I won't sweat Disney taking it another 25 miles or so.

wow! that was a great description of how the ME system works! I'm already planning on using ME, but it made me feel even happier with my decision!

My sister was afraid to allow her family's luggage to be picked up by ME for our trip last Dec. so she & her husband lugged six suitcases plus coats & stoller & diaper bag, carry-ons, etc. through the airport waiting for us to arrive on a different flight. They took their luggage on ME & ours was delivered later.

Needless to say, for our trip in March, she changed her mind and allowed their luggage to go on ME. It is a great service. The luggage actually arrived in our rooms about 5 minutes after we got there which was great!

Take advantage of this wonderful service. The longest we have ever waited for luggage to be delivered was 3 hours. Plus you can get out of the airport in just a matter of minutes!! More time for FUN!!! :Pinkbounc  :cheer2:

But if he is still leery, you can take your luggage on ME.

Thanks for that description of the process, CleveRocks! I don't think I've ever seen it before.

First, my compliments to Eric (CleveRocks) for his excellent, detailed explanation of the luggage handling process.

Yes, guests are allowed to throw away the yellow luggage routing tags instead of using them — but that really means those guests are throwing away the best part of the Magical Express service. Guests who do so have to go to baggage claim, wait for their bags, lug them to Magical Express check-in, typically arrive at their resort on a later motorcoach than if they had bypassed baggage claim, have the driver store them under the motorcoach, tip the driver when he returns them, lug their bags through resort check-in and to their room (or tip bell services to do so).

I trust Disney (and Disney's contractors) much more than I trust the airlines.

I was wondering about his as well. I don't have a problem with Disney taking care of my luggage at all; however, our flight arrives at 6:00pm. My original plan (befoer the whole terrosist thing) had been to just pack all of our tolietries, swim suits, and jammies in a carry on in case the luggage took quite a while to come (which I have read it can). Well, unless the no liquids policy is lifted before we leave on 9/2 (which I am still hoping for) that plan is scratched. I am just afraid we won't have our bags before DD5 and DS 2 go to bed.

Any thoughts on this? :confused3

What toiletries would you need before your luggage arrives? There's shampoo and conditioner in your room (and soap), and you can pick up some basic stuff like toothpaste and mouthwash either in a gift shop at the airport before you head to the DME check-in, or at your resort. Or you can ship yourself a package, or order these items from walgreens.com, drugstore.com, etc and have them shipped directly to your resort. You can call any such site's customer service line to see how far in advance you'd have to order to make sure it arrives a day before you, or since you'll get to the resort around 7 or 7:30, even that day.
