Can someone update please - Magic bands and fast passes

Hi we haven't used our DVC membership for travel to parks for the past 3 years due to other trips, Vero and RCI but planning to go in July AKL Kidani and can't wait. I haven't kept up to date with DIS board postings and new things for members. Booked my vacation on line and signed up for ME which is cool but I'm confused at what the magic bands are, do you need to sign up for them? Also, fast passes apparently can be reserved in advance? What are the rules and how do I do that? Yikes I feel out of date and old. Any help is appreciated.

You might be better to look on the Theme Parks board. There are lots of posts about it including an FAQ or two and a few DISers have already created their own primers and tips for the new system that they have linked in their signatures. I'm sure DVCers can help here as well, but there's a ton of Info on the other board.
