Can someone tell me what happened?

We got a lot of compliments on all our shirts. Thank you again to all the fabulous DISigners that created designs for my family.

When I washed the shirts, inside out of course, some of them look pretty beat up. Needless to say, I was really upset. Does anyone know what I did? Or what I could have done so we could've got more wear out of the shirts?

Many things could've, right down to the brand of the transfers you used.

For future reference:

~Wash all shirts before placing designs on them; this prevents shrinkage and wash away any pesticides/chemicals that could affect the design in the future.

~Make sure the brand of the transfers are a good one. We found that Avery works the best, we have shirts from '06 that are still in perfect condition from the Avery transfers, and shirts from '07 that are messed up because we didn't.

~The first couple of times you wash your shirts, wash them inside out. This helps prevent water/soap damage while the design "sets". Just like a stain honestly lol.

okay now for the opposite experience - I made over 60 shirts - 80% of them with HP transfers and 20% with Avery transfers. Only one shirt cracked in the middle - it was the Avery transfer. I think it got beat up in the dryer but not sure why just that one and not the other 3 shirts in there with that one! Go figure.

every single shirt I made cracked or bled-- I kind of figured it would happen so didn't really get too upset. I used Avery and another brand but they both had problems. I just plan on making new shirts for the next trip.

We had some of ours peel (in the middle of the design) after the vinegar wash (not in the dryer). We removed the design using a very hot iron and carefully scrapping the melted design with a butter knife (the kind without teeth). We washed the shirts and reused them. Give a try before throwing them out!

I have not had good luck with the iron ons. I made some shirts for our family when my son was in Iraq and they all looked like we had worn many,many times just after the first wash. I am afraid to do this again but there are so many awsome DISigns out there that I am wanting some. I have asked at each thread I have looked at how this works and can not get anyone to answer me.

well i'm kind of 50/50 on the shirts. I have some that look perfect, even after washing and wearing. And then other that the kids wore that were peeling while they were being worn! I have no idea what the problem is. i've used generic transfer paper, and also HP paper. It's only the children's shirts that are ruined. DH thinks it may be the shirt?? I just got $3 shirts from Michaels for the kids, but for DH and I i used Hanes, or even fitted shirts for myself.

I didn't answer because I wasn't sure what you were asking. If you mean, how do you get a design...peruse the designers' threads. If you find something you like, jump in and ask for it to be personalized for you. If you don't find anything or have a specific idea, either ask within one of the designers' threads or ask generally on the board. You stand a better chance of getting more than one suggestion on the general board, but it's easy for those to get overlooked by the busy designers too, so don't be afraid to bump it up if no one sees it.

thank you for the information. I guess my question was very vague. I did mean how do I request a design. Now I just have to find the ones I like again.

Make sure you don't use fabric softener when you wash them the first time. This is the main problem that I've heard caused problems with designs. My mom did this on her first ones.

The second thing is make sure you have a good hot iron. I didn't get mine ironed on until Disney on our last trip. The irons in the motel room aren't real hot. It took forever to have them actually adhere. They didn't end up well in the dryer.

I wasn't planning on ironing some until we get to disney. We were going to have a t-shirt making party since we're getting in late but want to get in the disney groove.

Should I pack my own iron? We're staying at a Marriott Courtyard. lol how are their irons?

Thank you all for you responses. I don't know. I washed all the shirts and only partially dried them in the dryer (not using any fabric softner) before ironing on the transfers. I used some t-shirts from Michael's and some t-shrits from Jiffyshirts.com (I think they were Hanes). I used two kinds of transers, HP and Wilson (from Michaels). I'm sure our irons were hot.

Has anyone ever tried to re-iron the design where it is coming off? Maybe for the spots where the design is off, I will try permanent markers or fabric paint. Just a little something so we can wear them again.

hmmm, since you mention they're coming apart the the corners, it makes me wonder if perhaps indeed the iron wasn't on the corners long enough! Re the worn lettering, the only thing I can think of is if you added a liquid detergent directly onto the shirts and not into a tub of water? just thoughts, I really have no idea.

hope you can salvage them; they look terrific!
