Can I park at other resorts just to check them out?

Next week we will be at WDW for the first time in ten years and the first time as DVC members. I decided to rent a car and was wondering if I could go to the other resorts to check them out (peek at the lobby and gift shop) to see if they might be somewhere I’d like to stay in the future. Is this something people can do? We will be staying at OKW. I’ve stayed previously at SSR and BWV, so am more curious to see AKL, VGF, Poly, BLT, and the Wilderness Lodge resorts. Can I do this, or do you have to be staying at the resort?

Technically yes you can. However, the caveat to that is the gate agent has final say and more often than not you’ll find them turning you away at near park resorts. Though slower times they will allow it more often than busy times, and it’s for only experiencing that resort.

Edit: Dining reservations still allow you to park.

Thank you! I have two follow up questions…. As far as you know, is this the rule for all DVC members (resale also)? Does it matter if you are staying at a DVC resort, but aren’t staying under your membership? We did a timeshare exchange with a different timeshare, so didn’t book directly with DVC.

It doesn’t have anything to do with DVC… they just don’t want the resorts overrun with people driving to the more desirable locations and taking all the parking intended for guests of those resorts and people with dining reservations at those resorts.

Totally understandable!

The good thing is that you can look at all of the monorail resorts and Wilderness Lodge directly from Magic Kingdom by walking, boating, or monorail.

So, it’s really only Animal Kingdom you need to get creative with.

I have seen so many people turned away from resorts close to the parks. There aren’t enough parking spaces for guests with actual reservations at the resort and people who want to visit. Just use Disney transportation and visit whatever resort you wish.

I'd just take a bus from Animal Kingdom park. Such a short and quick ride.
Absolutely. There's been a sign at the entrance to AKL for a couple years now - 'no entry without a room or dining reservation'. The likelihood of being turned away with a car is high. But you can bus from your resort to AK, and then hop a short bus ride to AKL. Or bus from your resort to MK, take the monorail around to those resorts, and then bus from MK to AKL.

There are definitely ways to do what you want to do without the concern of being turned away from the parking lot of the resort.

We have shown the security officer our DVC membership card and told them we are just coming in to see the property and always been waived in.

We always proactively provided the DVC membership card so not sure if you really need it, but we're owners so not a big deal to show it.

There's basically zero chance of you being allowed to park at Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, BoardWalk, Beach Club or Riviera unless you have a room reservation or a dining reservation. All are within walking distance or monorail / boat / Skyliner transport of theme parks. Too many people would use the resort lots for park access, and they simply aren't equipped for that traffic.

There's a slightly better chance of getting into Animal Kingdom Lodge, Old Key West and Saratoga Springs. AKL used to routinely turn away people because there was a fear the savanna would be treated like a free attraction unto itself. But that didn't really prove to be the case. Resort also has a lot of self-parking. Still, it's up to the guard at the entry point. Sadly, plenty of people will still try to talk their way into a Disney resort so they can park and take the bus.

If you're staying off-site, probably the best approach is to park at Disney Springs and take a bus to one of the resorts. GF/Poly/CR are all easily accessible once you reach one of them. Same for Beach/BoardWalk/Riviera. You could also consider a Minnie Van or uber to hop between them. Ride the monorail to visit those 3 resorts, take boat from MK over to Wilderness. Then pay for ride share from WL to Beach club to tour BC/BW/RIV.

If you schedule a DVC tour for the resort with DVC, you will be put on the list to park there.

You’ll get the hard(ish) sell, but you’ll get in.

Another option for the AKL visit is to schedule an ADR, perhaps lunch at Sanaa - then there are no issues getting in. Plus dining at AKL is one of the fun experiences. Park, eat, explore (walk to Jambo House lobby), view the animals - all at a relaxed pace.

At WDW there’s a real issue w/ folks trying to park at the near park resorts & then just walking into the parks. This is especially an issue at the Contemporary, the Poly, BW, & YC/BC, where guests at those resorts can’t find parking because of all of the interlopers. Are you envisioning a non park day where you’d drive from resort to resort or were you thinking to add resort visits to various park visits?
Either way, it’s not too hard to just rely on Disney transportation to get you from place to place if you plan your route, & although I’m not a bus fan, the other modes of transportation are much nicer IMO.
One of the things I enjoy about visiting WDW is going to the various resorts. I usually schedule a dinner ADR at a resort near the park I’m visiting or I plan on taking a break mid day from a park & having lunch at the resort’s QS. I actually enjoy taking the Disney boats to the various resorts & the Skyliner to Riviera - maybe because unlike the buses & monorail everyone on the boats & Skyliner has a seat.
On an MK day I take the quick boat ride from the MK to the GF then walk or boat over to the Poly - I like the Poly’s QS lunch spot - Captain Cooks, at the GF the QS Gasparillas is pleasant as is the Enchanted Rose which is the bar on the second floor of the lobby.
There’s also the slightly longer boat ride from the MK to the Wilderness Lodge, I like Geyser point at WL for lunch or a drink.
You’ve not mentioned the Epcot resorts, but it’s very easy to visit them by exiting Epcot via the International gate (between France & England) and walking through them, the Beach club is to the right & the Boardwalk to the left. The Skyliner is right at the back exit from Epcot for a visit to the Riviera. Or you can take the friendship boats from the front of DHS which stop at the Swan/Dolphin, then the YC/BC, then the BWV, then Epcot.
AKV is a 5 minute bus ride from AK - the bus stops at Kidani first, Jambo second & if you go in the middle of the day the bus shouldn’t be too crowded. I’m not sure how strict they are about parking (AKV is one of our home resorts & we stay there often but never have a car) of all of the resorts I’d guess you’d more likely to be allowed to park if you said you wanted to grab lunch at the QS Mara. Or, as mentioned by a previous poster, schedule lunch at Sanaa (in the Kidani building) or dinner at Boma (in the Jambo building) & you’ll be able to park - Sanaa’s special bread service is really good & the restaurant overlooks Sunset Savanna, Boma is IMO the best buffet at WDW.
There’s also the resort monorail which runs from the TTC (where you’ll park for the MK) to the Poly, then the GF, then the MK, then the Contemporary/BLT, then back to the TTC.
Finally, there’s walking - the TTC is right next to the Poly. The Contemporary/BLT is a short walk from MK & the GF is a longer but very pretty walk in the opposite direction from the MK. The GF & the Poly are right next door to each other & you can walk between them.

DH and I spend 2-3 weeks every Jan/Feb at WDW and never do parks. At least once in each trip we do a "transportation day" and visit most/all resorts.

We enjoy figuring out different ways to get around. Park at DS. Boat or walk to Saratoga Springs, boat to Old Key West. From there bus to MK or EPCOT. Hop on/off monorail for MK resorts then Epcot resorts. Then get on skyliner for RIV. Or, you could just do a couple a day.

Animal Kingdom is easy - tell them you are driving in to get some Zebra Domes. Generally they aren't that picky at that resort because people generally don't try to park there to "sneak" into anywhere. We've gone in a few times for Zebra Domes, both legitimately and just to hang out at the resort for a bit. (We have never "cheated" parking there to go to parks.)

When we were eating at the California Grill in the Contemporary last year we heard our waiter complaining to another table how during all the late night MK parties for Halloween and Christmas, he would get a lot of no shows where guests just ate the no show fee in order to park at the Contemporary for the parties. I guess it was significantly hitting his income. A lot of the wait staff at the higher end (or maybe all) WDW restaurants seem to be long term employees, so when things like that happen it can hurt. Or maybe he was just vying a bigger tips. :P!!
So definitely a strictly enforced lot there.

Honestly, it's actually the other way around. "Technically" parking at every resort is for resort guests and visitors with dining reservations only. Certain resorts are far less strict when it comes to allowing others in to park, while some are extremely restrictive.

Did you read the rule in the attached? The rule does explicitly say shopping or enjoying activities is allowed. Also parking at BLT is explicitly allowed for TOTWL when open, if space allows.
Disney Vacation Club Members who wish to shop, dine or enjoy activities for the day at a Disney Resort hotel are not subject to self-parking fees. Charges for valet parking will still apply.
Also I followed up and said that it is unlikely to be allowed by the guard given that usually they are at or near capacity. Similar language exists on the WDW site: https://www.disneyholidays.com/walt-disney-world/faq/parking/
Complimentary standard self-parking is available for Guests visiting Disney Resort hotels for the day to enjoy select dining, shopping, entertainment and recreation experiences.
I know everyone seems to say the hard rule is when you have dining reservations on here. However, that is when you will be pretty much guaranteed entrance to the parking lot (even sometimes there have been restrictions for that though rare), not the only time. I've been told yes and no when parking but it was always because at capacity, not because it was explicitly not allowed. For instance WL to eat at Geyser Point they let me park, even though I had no reservation. Though I have also been turned away when they are at capacity and asked to park at the Theme Park. But never have I been told once I'm not allowed to park without a dinning reservation, just explicitly told that they are only allowing resort guests to park for the time being because parking is at capacity.

Edit: Adding link and language on the US site: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/guest-services/parking/
  • Standard self-parking is complimentary for day Guests while they enjoy select dining, shopping, entertainment and recreation experiences at Disney Resort hotels.

"Day Guests", in Disney terminology, are those individuals invited by a current resort guest to spend the day with them at the resort. You are requested to visit the front desk and have them registered as day guests and the parking privilege is then extended to them.
