Can borrowed points be transfered?

I had never come across needing to do this before, and wasn't sure if it was allowed! I think it is, but the transferee can't bank them, right?

No. Banked or borrowed points cannot be transferred.

I was under the impression from reading previous posts that they could be transferred. I would appreciate further discussion on this, as it directly affects something we were planning to do in the future.

Is it that the points can be transferred in their current UY and then the recipient can borrow them to the year they want to use them? In other words, if someone wanted to use my 2011 points during 2010, could I transfer them as 2011 points and then the RECIPIENT could borrow them into the 2010 UY?

As Jim said, borrowed points cannot be transferred. Only non-banked, non-borrowed points can be transferred. Maybe you could post your details and someone could offer another idea to help you do what you are trying to do.

Well, I don't want to break any rules by posting too many details. We are trying to gather enough points to book a trip for our anniversary with the 11-month booking window. We own at the resort we want to visit, but we won't have enough points of our own by our anniversary date. We have two different accounts (due to purchasing a resale for one of our resorts), so it's not an issue to trade same year points from our end... we wouldn't get caught with the "one transfer per account per UY" rule. BUT, if we wanted to trade with another owner who only had one account, we would have to be transferring points for a different UY than the ones we received... i.e., if they transferred 2011 points to us, we would have to transfer 2010 points to them. Anyone have an idea of a strategy that would work if we found an owner with only one account who was willing to trade?

Yes, you could transfer points from your 2010 Use Year and accept a transfer into your 2011 Use Year (or vice versa) which would use up the one transfer available for both of those Use Years. Once transferred the points may be banked, but points that have been borrowed or banked cannot be transferred to another owner.

Would the person who received the transfer then be able to bank those transferred 2010 points to their own 2011 UY?

Yes. I didn't want to get that far ahead in my initial answer.

I should have said that banked or borrowed points cannot be transferred, but transferred points can be banked or borrowed. (I think -- right, Rob?)

The way I remember it (when I remember it :rolleyes1 ) is that banking and borrowing are FINAL, irreversible transactions. Once done, those points stay where they are.

Okay, that works for my situation then! *big sigh of relief*
Now a followup... how long is the banking window? If someone received a transfer of my 2010 points with a June UY, what is the last date those points could be banked by the recipient to the 2011 UY?

Thanks everyone! That clears a lot up for me (and doesn't work in my favor, but that is okay. We will improvise!)

Thanks!

My understanding is that the recipient of the transferred points may bank them, but cannot borrow them.

Transferred points are supposed to retain all of their characteristics -- home resort booking windows, UY, expiration, banking deadlines, etc, etc.

A few years ago, there were a few anectdotal reports of transferred points assuming the identity of the account they went into, but I suspect that glitch has been corrected.

I would assume that whatever you transfer keeps all of the relevant characteristics.

Transferred points retain their original use year and home resort tags. As you probably know, the banking deadline for a June use year is the following January 31

Transferred points can be banked but they cannot be borrowed. Borrowed points cannot be transferred or banked. Banked points cannot be transferred or borrowed.

And you are probably right. Transferring is pretty complicated.

MS has been allowing the banking of transferred points beyond their usual deadline. As jim noted, transferred points are supposed to retqin their original characteristics (Home Resort, Use Year), but they have typically allowed them to be banked once transferred even if beyond the usual deadline for either the original member or the transferree. To my knowledge, there is no specific mention of a banking deadline for transferred points in our documents (just that transferred points may be banked), so it could be up to the MS rep, but I can't recall anyone stating that they were not allowed to bank transferred points.

Transferred points can be banked but they cannot be borrowed. Borrowed points cannot be transferred or banked. Banked points cannot be transferred or borrowed.
Yep -- that's how I should have said it!

Many thanks to all who replied! That clarifies things a lot for me. Luckily, it still works out fine for what we want to do (provided some other owner is willing, of course!). We still have sufficient untouched points in both the 2010 and 2011 UY to make whatever trade the other owner might want. I'm SO GLAD I started this learning process early, because it would have been a horrible disappointment if I had already banked, borrowed or used some of those points before looking for a trade!

Y'all are the best!!!

I was curious about transferring points from my June 2011 allotment to another member, here is the reply I received:

Yes, we may transfer vacation Points from your June 2011 Use Year to
someone else's Membership. Please remember that the Vacation Points will
retain your Use Year and your Home Resort Prioirity.
