in Rome or near the port of Rome for 2 adults? Would you recommend staying at the port or in the town (I'm thinking in town to see the sights). How do we get from Rome to the port? Just starting to plan for next year (No it's not a disney trip but I didn't know where else to ask. Hope that's ok) thanks

The recommendation really depends on what you are doing before or after your stay in Rome. There is no "port of Rome". Most cruises stop at Civitavecchia, and then people get transported to Rome. It can take at least an hour or more to get from Civitavecchia to Rome, so it's not a good place to stay if you want to see Rome. Are you staying multiple days? Just one night? Sailing after seeing Rome? Seeing Rome after a cruise? It's really hard to recommend without any idea of what you're looking for & what your plans are

That said, the Viva Italia ABD stays at the Hotel Bernini Bristol, and I've heard people say a lot of good things about it. It's "right in the heart" of Rome.

Sayhello

I second the Bernini Bristol. It was a wonderful hotel. (please note that most European hotels are small, but I didn't think the Bernini was any smaller than a typical hotel in the US). It is close to the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. Not too far from Vatican City and The Colosseum. You can get an on/off bus tour that stops at all these places too and I believe it picks you up right in front of the hotel. There are also many GREAT restaurants in that area as well.

Before we met up with the Disney folks for the Viva Italia trip (2007), we stayed at a hotel near the airport--we shuttled to the hotel (free shuttle)--and they offered a free shuttle (set times) into Rome. So we went into town on our own for the day, then shuttled back to the hotel, and the next day shuttled back to the airport and met up with our Disney guides.

Lot of work--but much less expensive. These days I think I would opt for convenience over expense, bite the bullet and stay in Rome. But--another option.

We just came back from the most amazing trip and stayed at the Albergo Del Senato in the heart of Rome right next door to the Pantheon-Awesome location! Beautiful clean hotel, includes wonderful breakfast and you can walk to everything easily. It is also a safe location on the Piazza Rotunda. We found this hotel on tripadvisor and at the time of booking it was rated #1. It is not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. It has a rooftop bar that has the best views of Rome. We would stay here again for sure. It made our experience in Rome fantastico!
We also used private transfers to port terminal and airport with Romecabs. They were reasonable and just fine.
Have a great time on your trip!:goodvibes

I appreciate the feedback from those who have actually stayed in the hotels. We are doing a med/holy land cruise next year with NCl and want to spend some time in Rome before going to the port in Civitavecchia. :thumbsup2
