I hope someone on this board can assist me. I am trying to research my family tree. I found out my father was born in South Shields. I have contacted them for a copy of his birth certificate and here is where my problem begins. They will not accept an american money order (i allowed for the exchange rate),they will not accept a bank draft in pound sterling.
They will only accept an english money order for 7pound sterling.
I have been back and forth with them over this, their final solution was to have someone in England purchase it for me.
Since I dont have any family or friends in England, I was hoping as a fellow dis board member, someone could assist me, or perhaps offer a solution I hadn't thought of.

Have u asked them if they if they will accept paypal as that transfers the money? Or maybe send a cheque.

You can purchase any birth certificate, marriage certificate or death certificate after 1841 and they will deliver overseas. Just check out this page for more information:

http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/topics/bmd_3.htm#englandwales

You can use a credit card, if you don't have one getting a friend to buy it for you is your best bet.

If your dad is from South Shields you should be able to see census information and birth information etc on www.ancestry.co.uk. As you're in America you'll have to register on ancestry.com but you can pay for full world membership and have access to all UK records which will help you in tracing your father's relatives.

If its just info on your dad you want you can send me a pm and i'll have a look on ancestry.co.uk for you as i'm a member (i've been doing my dh's family tree for yonks!).

Good luck!

for your help. I finally found a bank in the us that would order a draft in english pounds drawn on an English Bank. I just received it today and put it in the post. I hope they will accept it. I will try all of your web sites if they dont accept the draft. Thanks again. I hope to someday visit England and personally try and trace some of my family. I am 71yrs young so I'm not sure if any are left or not.:hippie:

i dont live far from south shields, was born there myself, if i can help with any local info i will. Gill

I hope you manage to get the information you need. My Nan has just started tracing our family tree and has come up with lots of interesting information so far.

Good luck :goodvibes
