We're waiting on pins and needles for the RV show here in Pensacola. According to the advertisments, it's supposed to be next month. Last year it was cancelled - no notice or reason. OH Well!

If you wonder how to keep the fever from making you sign on the line, just keep looking at the big diesel pushers with the middle to high six figure price tag. After you figure what that means per/month, that rig you already have sure looks good.

Sure can't wait for the show!!!

We just bought our first pop-up a few weeks ago, and I can't wait to take it out. Unfortunately, we don't know when we're going to be able to. When we bought it, we had an Explorer, and it was just too hard to tow. So, we bought a Dodge Durango and made arrangements to have the electric brake control in the Explorer transfered to the Durango. We made an appointment Monday to have the hitch installed, and when DH went to pick it up, the brake control wasn't in the truck. Turns out they sold the Explorer before they got the brake control out!

So, we have a wonderful new pop-up, but we can't tow it. Can't wait to get that new car survey from Dodge. . .

Hey Scott! You're getting a new camper?! Just watch out for those flying branches!! ;)

We're selling our pop-up this spring, and we have our eyes on a motorhome that some friends of ours are selling. It's a 1995 Dutchman - very clean! They're only asking $18,000 for it, so we hate to pass it up! At the recent RV show, the ones from that year were going for $30,000!

Hit the camping show in Richmond, VA 2 weeks ago. All I can say is WOW!!! Some of those things cost more than my house.

Love going through them though. Guess we will stick with our popup at the moment, though we did get an extended cab truck so we don't have to take two vehicles to camp.

I missed the camping show in richmond. Forgot to write down the dates. Hopefully we will be able to make the next one. We really need to upgrade!

KERMIT,
We also have a dodge durango that we pull a popup with. We had a astro van before that. And we wanted something with more power so if we ever sold our popup and got a bigger camper, it would pull it. We don't have any problems pulling the popup at all with the durango.
We don't have anything special on ours (now if they sold it before you could get the electric brake off...they owe you a brake in my book). What did the dealership say to you about it?

We have a 35 foot camper with a slide out. We plan on getting it out of storage this weekend just to make sure everything is in shape for our April trip to FW. This will be our second trip with this camper. We went one other time with our previous camper which did NOT have a slide out which is one of the reasons we have one now. What is a superslide?

You said you were selling your popup. I probably live too far away to be a buyer, but I am interested in ballpark figures on a gently used popup. I spent all my childhood vacations popup camping and now that I'm a mom of two beautiful dd's, I would love to give the same wonderful experiences to them. What's your favorite make? Model? I thing we had a Viking.

Listening to everyone on this forum has really reignited the camping fire in my soul! We spent a week at WL earlier this month, but next time I want to be at FW!

We consider a superslide a slideout with a dinette and a sofa, as opposed to a regular slide which is usually only the sofa area,

That slide sure makes a lot of room for us, we had at times 7 people in our 25 foot trailer and it gets cramped - then those irish tempers start-a-flarin ;) ;)

We just bought a brand new 32 foot bunkhouse TT with a super slide - what a difference the slide makes. It's basically the same model we had before - queen bed up front, 4 bunks in back, but the slide saves mom's claustrophobia. We had 10 people for two nights in the last camper - somebody almost left in a body bag. We're taking it to FW next week - can't wait. It will be our second trip out with this one. For all who are considering buying campers - a word of advice - buy what you really want (and can afford). Don't settle for less. I've traded 2 times in two years because I didn't just go for it the first time. Now I'm happy.

somebody, go for it! For price ranges and a general guideline to values, take a look at the NADA guide for RV's. They will only allow a few (3? 4?) price checks per day so choose which models you want to price carefully, then go back to the site the next day when you have more. There are "values" for all kinds of RV's there.

A few years back, we had a new Jayco 10UD and we just loved it! :D I grew up with pop-up camping too. It's so nice to be able to leave your gear packed throughout the whole season and just pack your clothes and food to go. Compared with tent-camping, it's so much easier, especially with a family. Plus there are amenities and comforts unavailable in tenting.

The porta-potty eliminates the hassles of middle-of-the-night and rainy morning bath-house sprints. Heat and/or A/C extend the camping season. Everything seems cleaner and comfier when you are up off the ground and the beds are above the floor. And there's nothing like a comfortable dinette, a simple breakfast prepared in the galley and a good board game played in jammies to lighten up a rainy morning. :D No wet sleeping bags, either.

We sold our Jayco when we had a period of financial need. Now, after several years without one, we just bought a new-to-us 1989 Coleman Chesapeake (with brand new tenting, just $1,750!). Yay! It's in excellent condition and know we'll have a lot of fun in it. Search around a while to decide what brands, models, floorplans and features would suit you. Then look for the best deal on one of those. Remember to make sure that your tow vehicle can handle the load before you buy.

The most popular brands are probably Coleman, Jayco and Starcraft. Remember that most warrantees are only good for the original new owner not for a subsequent owner, even if they buy a used unit from a dealer's trade-in stock. Other brands are also good for various reasons. Learn loads more about pop-ups by reading the forums at Pop-up Times.

We can't wait to get back to short notice getaway weekends! :) And we expect that we will get back to Fort Wilderness with our pop-up at some point. Last time we camped there, we spent about 11 nights and it was definitely too short! :) *sigh* :)

Sltrawick, sorry it took me so long to respond. Dodge finally told us yesterday that they were unable to get the electric brake control back, so we should make an appointment where ever we want and give that place a PO # and the Dodge dealership will pay for it. It's still a pain, though. When we paid Dodge to install the hitch, we thought we would give up our truck for a morning and be done with it. Not so. It's taken a bunch of phone calls, and now we have to take our truck somewhere that's 15 miles outside of town in the boonies to get the rest of the equipment installed.

That's not the worse part, though. They admitted before DH took the truck home that they didn't install the brake control. He got it home and found out they didn't even install that thing you plug the trailer into that makes the lights on the trailer work! I'll admit that having an electric brake control is semi-optional (although not very safe since it is a heavy pop-up). Obviously, we can't tow it at all without brake lights.

Dodge is also going to pay for the brake lights, but I'm really frustrated with that dealer. They make a big deal out of how they're a 5-star dealer and the best one in all of South Carolina, but we've had nothing but headaches with their service department.

I have to agree with you on the dealerships through Dodge...I think they are all that way! :(
When we went to FW last summer, we towed our popup and when we got there, we didn'thave any oil left in the Durango. Put oil in it and made it home (we added as we went). As soon as we got unhitched the camper, we took it directly to the dealership and there was a recall on the seal/gasket on the exhaust intake manifold. Well, after we got home...our radio didn't work. So we took it back (they had loosened a wire when they were working on it the first time). Well, that was fine, but then the next month, we had gone out of town and went to use our cruise control...didn't work. Back to the shop. Come to find out when they hooked the wire back up for the radio..they somehow had loosened the wire for the cruise control.
ARe they all a bunch of idiots that work there? AAHH! No problems since then and technically...we shouldn't have had to go back those other 2 times. Just the once.
Other then that...I have throughly enjoyed my Durango. We had thought about an electrical brake...but after all the crap they have done prior, I'm afraid to take it in to have anything else done to it.

I would recommend the electric break controller, it makes towing your trailer safer, and it will lessen the wear on your tow vehicle breaks, I understand it is optional on most pop ups but if your trailer is equiped with electric breaks get the controller just for the peace of mind, have it installed at a hitch shop, they know what they are doing as far as trailering equipment.

Thanks for the answer on the superslide. I had one and didn't even know it. We wouldn't live without one now. Most of our camping trips, we have 8-10 people for 7-10 days, so we need the room. I agree that you should buy the most you can afford. The first camper I bought did not have a slideout and I traded it in less than two years.
I'm interested in finding places in the Southeast where people have vacationed. We have been going to Myrtle Beach for 10 days every summer but are looking for some place new. We like the ocean and usually have several children (ages 6-13)

Well, since everyone is talking about trips. We're planning on going down to Santa Rosa Beach, FL over spring break. Hopefully we'll get to go. There have been some health issues with family members and our dog. Anyway, someone asked for another nice place to stay. We are staying at Topsail Hill State Preserve. It's ranked 10/10/10 and 5W's like FW. It's very nice and close to the beach. They only allow TT or MH, no popups or tents though. We went last year in July and really enjoyed it. They have a path back to the beach, but it's sand. Very hard to walk in deep sand for one mile! Trust me ;) They are supposed to upgrade to gravel path and have a walkover the dunes to protect them. I'm going to put up a website with photos from there when we get back. My WDW website will have a link, if any are interested. The campsites are really nice. They have a paved pad AND table area (unlike FW). It was very quiet over the 4th, believe it or not. Can't wait to go. Hopefully, the sun will be shining and temps in the 70's at least.
