Camp Vent!!

My dd is 6yrs old goes to a 1/2 day camp with optional trips and is given 2 shirts that only need to be worn if they are going on a trip and it was $500 for 8 weeks of 1/2 days. One shirt for a $6K summer is a rip off.

more like 6k is a rip off:headache:

Well when this camp started 11 years ago they wanted to get kids to come from the other camps.. so air conditioned transportation, towels and such were incentives. Others in the area have done some similar things. But the camp has cut back with some things they offered in previous years. For 6k I will complain about only getting 1 shirt!! We live in very different areas and have very different expecations I guess.

I'm sorry and it may just be me but you have stated the cost like 3 times. Does it make you feel better to throw that it cost you 6k out there?? I would NEVER pay that much for a day camp for my children. My kids and I spend the summers doing things together and going on trips together so 6k could go for some very nice trips here. We have residential camps that do not even cost that much and are wonderful camps for the kids.

I don't see what the big deal is. Wash the shirt by hand and line dry each night. Not that hard. Or just buy another one. There are worst things in the world than only getting one shirt for camp.

I think the better question is why are you paying so much when you yourself called it exorbent?

The majority of the day camps where I live are this expensive. The one my bff sends her kids to in LI is even more!

I haven't looked into sleep away camps, since first of all she wouldn't go, and from what I have heard from other mom's they are even more expensive.

Wow....that just seems like a crazy amount for camp for my brain. I just gotta ask, (and I'm not being snarky just curious), is that for 8 weeks or more? If it's only 8 weeks then that's $3000 a month for day care, which is more than my mortgage! :scared1:

and for that much money, then they should get you a shirt for every day of the week and wash them too!

Um, I guess you missed this quote: <<We live in very different areas and have very different expecations I guess.>>

Was this perhaps posted on the wrong board? ;)

Yeah, like your house getting foreclosed on, needing food stamps b/c you've been out of work for months, or declaring bankrupcy when your medical expenses become unmanageable. :confused3

Sorry, can't.quite.muster.the.compassion.

Yes, I'm being snarky, but this thread is embarrassing and a bit insulting to those on this board with real money problems. :sad2:

If this is really a problem for you, you are very blessed. Wash the shirt every night in the sink and be glad you can afford such a thing as $6k daycamp. That same amount of money would pay my rent for 8 months.

That's not terribly high for camp around the area for the whole summer. Lunch, towels and air conditioned transportation all seem to be a given, but it is nice that they also wash the bathing suits. I think two shirts would have been nice, but you may be available to purchase another one or two if you ask. It will be a pain to wash the one shirt each night. I have friends that have moved away and have great camps around for way less money, prices are just inflated in the tri-state area. I think it would be great if there were more day camps around run by local towns for a nominal fee.

I only spend $250/week for a sleep away camp - DS 12 will be embraced by the comfort of a WW II canvas tent, but although not air conditioned, is on a platform 2 feet from the ground, in case it rains. Oh and he has a cot, that he circles with mosquito netting. No laundry needed, because we will pick him up in the same clothes we dropped him off in, and he will have had the time of his life - and be planning next year.

That would be an awesome camp.

It's a vent...since I feel for what I am paying it should be included. I feel my blessings are in my four kids...not how much money we may or may not have.

I'm curious...did you approach anyone at the camp to ask if you could purchase one or two more shirts? Then you could weight the cost of the shirts over the time/effort/expense of washing the single shirt.

I'd be surprised if they didn't have additional shirts available.

We have a town rec center camp but it stinks. They sit around and do very little. Any trips are extra, which is understandable..but they may go to a local pool 2x a week and they program is just awful. Our older 2 boys went one summer and they hated it. I wasted my money since they stayed home more often then they went! Thankfully I was on mat. leave that summer.

Some surrounding towns have wonderful programs..but I don't live in those towns. I wish my town would run a better program.

Growing up in Brooklyn I went to a local camp run through our temple. We had swim everyday, went to parks, zoos, museums and other trips. As a kid I never really appreciated all that NYC had to offer. There was always an interesting activity and we were kept busy. When looking for programs for my kids over the past 20 years, I have always looked for similar programs.

I called this morning and was told they are $15.00 each. Just seems insane considering... :confused3

:thumbsup2 My son too! And this summer, I again, will have the pleasure of joining him, although staying in a less adventurous "mom's tent".

And the "no laundry needed" is not a joke... It's a fact and I was scolded for suggesting a shower & a change of clothes! :laundy:

PARTIAL

I do enough laudnry over the summer on weekends with towels and stuff to have to do it during the week too. I really don't want to do extra laundry!! I also don't want to waste soap and water just for 1 shirt..

Sorry if someone else has said this, I haven't read through the whole thread but...

If your DD is 13 isn't she old enough to wash the shirt herself (either by hand or in the machine)??

Maybe this could be her responsibility - just a thought.
