Camera question...

What do you all use for pictures? Do you use your phones only or do you bring a camera? My camera is a big one so I'm hesitant to bring it.

I use my phone and I have a canon power shot elph 300. It's a compact point and shoot but takes really great pictures.

I use my Samsung phone. It's nice to be able to take a picture and pretty much upload it to facebook I real time.

We do like to use our "big" DSLR but not every day, or all day. But we do like to use it for some nice pictures of shows, parades, etc.

Phone and Memory Maker.

In the parks- my Samsung Galaxy S5 takes super good pics and uploads quickly. Add in the Memory Maker which I can access from my phone and I am all set. For the resort and other out-of-park locations I have a Nikon D3300. The zoom is what makes it worth bringing along. I also purchased a Wireless Adaptor that lets me upload to my phone super fast to then share the pics. All that being said, there are days I don't even want my phone in my hands in the parks!

I have my phone for pictures and I also have my Sony Nex camera with different lenses. I like my bigger camera but there are days when I really don't want to carry it in the parks but I do like to have it around the resort for pictures and for things like fireworks and night time parades were it does a better job than my phone.

Thanks everyone! I did get the memory maker. We are going to the dark side the first 4 days and they don't offer a picture pkg. I have an iPhone 6 which is good but wish I had a smaller camera with a good zoom to stick in my pocket.

If you are wanting something small - places like target and walmart have point in shoots for 60-80 - plus some come with a memory card - then you can use it in the "dark side" and at Disney instead of your bigger camera -

I used memory maker and my phone - but i think this year since we are going for two weeks, I will want to have my phone, my regular camera, dh's point and shoot, AND Memory Maker

An iPhone 6 is as good, and in some ways better, than your typical budget point and shoot cameras. (those under around $200). What you lose in zoom, you gain in touch screen, easy social media sharing, in-camera editing ability (through the native functions and countless apps), gps tagging, etc. So compared to a typical sub-$200ish P&S, you are losing zoom, gaining some extra features, and basically matching image quality. (Though particularly the large iPhone 6, has image quality better than some P&S cameras).
If you want better image quality, then you most of those cameras don't fit in your pocket. There are some premium enthusiast cameras, like the Sony RX100, that can deliver high image quality, yet remain very compact.

They make small cameras with "pancake" style lens that fit in your pocket
(For the extra "zoom" you have to put the longer lens in the other pocket!)

If it's a Nikon DSLR... bring it. Unlike camera phones.... I get optical zoom and external flash in low light.

Universal does actually have a picture package. It just isn't as well known or extensive. There are not photographers all over like Disney, but they are at the main gates and at specified spots. It is also less user friendly since you have to get the borders added yourself before you leave the park each night. We got it for our 3 day visit a few years ago and loved the ride photos we got from it and the borders they added to the main gate photos. I just looked and the price has gone up significantly since we bought it. There used to be a discount if you bought it early too like Disney.

GoPro and Sony RX100 point-and-shoot compact camera. Used to have a DSLR, but that's way to heavy/bulky to carry around in my opinion.

I also have a Samsung Galaxy 5 and can get decent pics sometimes but at my age, have found that holding it steady to take pictures is difficult compared to holding a heavier camera. Plus I can't take pictures in Raw format on a phone.

For trips to Florida I also bring my Canon G12 along to save weight and get great night shots. Plus it fits into my pocket or small shoulder bag and got me some good pics at Universal without violating their ride photo restrictions.

My Canon X4i is still my preferred camera no matter what! I get the pictures I want and don't mind the weight even when I bring 2 extra lenses in my day pack. I still kick myself for the shots I have messed up that would have been good had I used my DSLR.

Guess what I'm trying to say is that you need to decide what is most critical for your trip and plan accordingly. Is the picture format (.jpeg only or Raw format or both) or the weight (phone or camera) or park restrictions such as those at Universal where you have to put your camera in a locker on some rides. And don't forget to assess your skills with whatever you choose to bring. If using your 'big camera' rather than your phone means that you are more likely to be pleased with the results then take it!
