I went and picked up this bag for my camera

I love it, it's got several compartments holds multiple lenses and other accessories it's got thick padding in case of the drop factor also opens from the top (I've seen a camera drop out of a backpack style bag and get destroyed) so the chance of anything falling out while open is small. I hope this helps, definitely read customer reviews that what I do before I buy.

The challenge will be finding one that fits the 70-200 2.8 lens. I love my Crumpler bags, but you have to get a $7 mil to fit that lens and it will not fit attached to the camera. I have the $7 mil bag for storing my gear, but it is just too big to carry around on a regular basis. Right now, I use my $5 mil bag and carry my 70-200 2.8 in a lens case.

I am in kind of the opposite situation as you right now. I have always been a die hard messenger bag fan, but have recently found that my gear is getting a little too heavy to carry in a messenger bag. So, I am looking for other bag alternatives.

Have you looked at Domke? They make some very nice bags and I do recall they had one that was a messenger style (803 I think). Still not sure if it will fit the 70-200 2.8 attached to the camera body.

Here is a list of what I keep in it.

-Camera body with one lens mounted on it.
-zoom lens
-flash
-digital photobank.
-6 sets of 4AA rechargable batteries.
-2 quick chargers for the batteries
-remote for the camera.
-sd card reader.
-room for another 3 lenses.
-manuals for both camera and flash. <<<<< rookie
-bottle holder on outside of bag.

It is a sling bag so it slides around easily.
It can get heavy if I pack more into it but I always have it.

I have a slingshot 200, that's what I have been using, but am finding it more and more combersom, which is why I am thinking of going to the messager style.

i have a tamrac system 3 that fits in the main body, my rebe lbody, 70-200f4, 10-17 fisheye, 28-135 is, 50mm and occasionally my 100mmmacro..it's tight but they have a bunch of larger systems...it also has 2 zipped pockets in front, on full width, one compartmentalized where i keep my batteries, memory, charger etc, one zippped one on top and a piggyback holder( so it goes over a rolling suitcase type handle) and another open pocket in back .mine was in the $60 range iir, i like it cause it has a modular system, you can add a waist belt, lens bags, filter wallets etc and so it grows and grows and grows till you need to crawl on the ground to be able to carry it all this is the 6 http://www.tamrac.com/5606.htm i really love the shoulder strap as it never slips and is comfy. i can swing it behind my back to get it out of the way cause the strap is long enough. you can basically take the guts of the main body out and configure it any way you want. the f2.8 is about an inch longer, i can fit my body and f4 length wise but you might need the 6 for the extra inch

I have the Crumpler 7 MDH and would definately recommend it.

I use it primarily to shoot my son's games and I put my 70-200 on at the field. So I don't need to have my camera at the ready at all times with the lens already attached like with a Slingshot bag.

It has a few pockets to store other stuff too like manuals, memory cards, filters, etc. The dividers are can be moved and re-configured easily to accommodate your needs. The only downside, Crumpler bags are expensive. I think mine cost around $128.

It holds:
Canon 30D w/grip
70-200mm 2.8
28-135mm
Canon 580 EX II flash
1.4 TC

I like my Lowepro Street and Field belt system. The Think Tank belt stuff is even better. I much prefer a system like that to any type of backpack or shoulder bag.

I used to love my fanny pack because I could rotate that to my front, swap lenses, and rotate it back. Alas, my gear grew faster than my fanny.

Shoulder/messenger bags work for me, I like the Crumpler $xM series. Like some of us, my camera is not in the bag all day anyway so I get the bag that fits all my daily gear, minus the camera itself. For now the biggest lens I carry is 70-200 f/4 so the $4M bag works well.

I use Tamrac's Velocity Pro Sling Pack, I have the older style Velocity 7 when I don't want to carry much and last year I bought the newer Velocity 9x - Pro Sling Pack. I can carry my 40d, 70-200mm IS f/4, 85mm, 50mm, 10-22mm and 17-40mm in it, I like the style and the ease of use, much better than my backpack.

I bought a messenger bag in February and after schlepping it around Disneyland and San Diego in July, I came home and promptly bought a backpack from Kata. I've been schlepping that around WDW this week and it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo much better than the messenger bag. I use the messenger bag as my laptop case now. LOL <sigh>

I just got a Lowepro Inverse 100 bag for my Sony DSLR and Lenses. It's a hip bag/fanny pack with a shoulder sling. It seems to work very well with easy access to the camera and gear. It seems like it will be a good bag for WDW in November. I'll know more after a several mile hike coming up with my Cub Scouts next weekend. One feature I liked was the integrated rain cover for the wet rides and rain showers.

I found a major problem with the messenger bag that I had was that it wouldn't fit in a lot of the mesh pockets on the rides. I had a terrible time getting it into the Indiana Jones Ride mesh pocket at Disneyland and in fact, it was only half way in. I braced the top part of the bag with my knees so it wouldn't fly out. In reality, it was wedged in there tighter than a pig in a sewer pipe... I had to work hard to get it out. The backpack that I got for WDW was easier to carry and fit in the mesh pockets easier.

I have a few bags but there are only 2 that I seem to grab most often. They're both made both messenger style Domkes. WH Press photographer bags

I have the Domke 803. It's large enough to carry all my photo gear, water tickets whatever I need including my tripod for traveling! Then when I get to the hotel or wherever I'm staying I switch to the smaller Domke F5XB for daytime. It will hold my D200 with the 18-200 and hood. I can get either my 30mm or 50mm in as well but it's tight with all my assorted little gear.

I am so excited for my upcoming trip as it will be the first trip with a SLR. Instead of buying souvenirs I will be renting a lens for the trip- the 70-200 2.8 IS.

Now the question becomes how do I transport this beast. lol

My thought was that I will be using it primarily on rides and shows to get some better low light shots.

I will also be carrying my 50mm 1.8 and a 28-70 2.8 as my main walk around lens.

Does anyone know if it will fit into the Lowepro slingshot 200 if it's not attached to the body? I don't want to buy a bag just to fit this lens since I won't be keeping it and buying one is not anywhere in my immediate future.

Any suggestions on other bags that are big enough to hold it but not so huge that it will be overkill once I don't have to carry the beast around?

this might be a silly question but i like to carry a back pack with snacks and water etc and i dont want to carry both a back pack and camera bag what do you suggest is the best way im affaird to put my lens in my back pack with snacks and maybe my jacket

The backpack I got from Kata, it was actually suggested in another Dis thread and recommended by a fellow Diser, has a bottom compartment where you can fit a lot of gear and a top compartment that can fit other stuff. Now, I'm not sure you can fit a thick jacket in there but a windbreaker for sure. It also has a mesh on the side that you can zip up or unzip to hold a water bottle. It held up very well for me at the parks. (I wish, though, that there was a way to make the back cool so my back didn't heat up with it on.)

I can tell you that my 70-200 non-IS just barely fits side-to-side in my Slingshot 200. The velcro that holds the divider in can only attach at the very top. It usually comes undone in the bag, but the lens stays put.

In my bag I can carry the 70-200, a gripped XT w/Sigma 17-70 attached, and my 580EX II in the main compartment. The 70-200 lens hood has to go in the upper compartment with my nifty-fifty. (I can't remember if the Sigma can go hooded with the 70-200 in there, the 70-200 is usually in my other backpack.)
