seems like I wasted $100...

If the quality is that poor, I wouldn't hesitate to ask for a refund. Is there any exif data included with the images?

We've never had enough Photopass pictures taken to make it worth ordering the cd, but I'm just about to order a few 5x7's from our recent trip. I hope I'm not disappointed too.

Good luck.

EXIF info

NIKON d70
exposure 1/320 sec.
f number 5.6
exposure program normal
exposure bias 0
ISo speed unknown
lens focal length 18mm

It's certainly not impossible. Someone recently stated that the D70 was older and that the D50 has superior image quality - and the ist DL and D50 have the same sensor... so if you have a better lens on your camera, you could probably get a better picture.

What resolution are the photos? Full size?

The D50 outperforms the D70 at higher ISO's, but I don't recall any reviews which have claimed the D50's IQ is superior to the D70 in general (I've not read any direct comparisons between the D70 and the Pentax). Which is not, of course, to say that there aren't any because I certainly have not read everything on the subject, and my memory is far from perfect. I'd just be surprised if that were the issue. The OP said that there was "no way" s/he could get an acceptable 8x10 from the Photopass images. That sounds like something other than a "not the latest generation sensor" kind of problem to me.

Do you mean UPLOAD? I just uploaded one of mine to try it. I used the simple mode where you can upload up to 5 at one time.

i was impressed when i bought the photopass cd and found that in most cases the original camera images were used, including exif information. the resolution is 2000x3008 so there should be plenty of pixels to make excellent 8x10 prints. all of the shots are iso 400, which is an odd choice considering the bright florida sunlight.

with that said, the images aren't any better than the ones from my canon digital rebel (original).

I went last Friday and had a picture taken at the Christmas party. The pictures the photographer took were terrible. I have a D70s and I was taking wonderful pictures. I wasn't using a tripod either. It was amazing to see the difference.

Obviously it was operator error by the Photopass photographer.

Same here, DD and I were at MVMCP on 12/4 and some of the pictures that were taken of us were pretty bad, one or two had the castle completely out of focus.

This is the picture that I took with no tripod or flash. The lower photos are from Photopass. Too bad he didn't look at his display or he would have seen that the photos were blurry. Also notice the crooked castle. Next time I will hand them my camera also.

I am having this same issue. I can see all the thumbnails, but when I click to edit the photo it signs me out. Then I have trouble getting back in. When I clicked on "contact us" a strange ad came up. I am running my antispyware now. Maybe the site was hacked?? :confused3

I noticed when I was at Disney back in June that many of the Photopass Photographers had the same camera as I did (Nikon D50, a few also had the D70s). However there was more than 1 that really didn't seem to know exactly what they were doing. For one character picture I had them take a few pics with my camera. I accidently left the lens cap on. The photographer looked through the view finder and could see anything cuz he gave this weird look, which is when I noticed the lens cap. So I apologized for accidently leaving it on. He turned the camera around a few times like he didn't know what to do. I said, Its the same camera you have, then I had to walk over to take the lens cap off.

There were a few other small issues I noticed that they could have done better, especially in regards to lighting and placement of themselves and the characters. Many of them could use some time here on the photography board.

When I got home and viewed their pictures online they were no better than mine. Some I though would have been better because they use a better flash than the pop-up I was using, but nope, turned out just the same. I think that has a lot more to do with the person using the equipment because when I use the better flash my pictures are much better than the pop-up.

So to the OP's original question. Yes it is very possible that your camera could take better pictures than the PP photographer.

safetymom - Those are even worse then the ones they took of us, and I thought ours were bad!! Even though we rarely buy them, I've always been quite pleased with the photopass pictures (assuming I wasn't having a bad hair day!!) but I wasn't too impressed with the quality of pictures taken on this trip, especially the ones from MVMCP. Of course, they're shooting at night which is more difficult as we all know but these "photographers" needs some lessons!!

although i was pleased that the original camera images were on the photopass cd as i mentioned above, i was disappointed with the photographic skill of the photopass photographers, especially after hearing the enthusiasm here on disboards. it definitely varies with the individual photographer taking the photos. several of the photos were crooked or had the top of the castle cut off. the photopass photographers sometimes didn't wait for my 3-yo to look at the camera so we have several photos where she is not looking at the camera at all. we have a series taken in toontown fair with pluto where a large shadow (of the lens hood?) appears in the lower part of all the photos taken by that photographer. also the exposure varies more than i would expect from a camera like the d70. most of the photos look fine but once in a while one in the middle of a series is underexposed.

I think it was Handicap18 who said in a recent thread to a poster to avoid the D70 but get the D50 or D70s or D80 instead, as they have better image quality.

I deferred to the Nikon lover in that regard. :teeth:

Regardless, some of those are pretty disappointing. I didn't buy any of our Photopass pics but I did save copies of the previews and didn't see any issues, and the picture they took of us as we were about to eat at Cinderella's Royal Table turned out wonderful, so much so that I actually paid the heavy price for the print, which I never do! I'm not sure what camera they were using at the time but I presume it was one of the above-mentioned ones... this was back in January this year.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with the guy behind the lens. A DSLR is a just a tool and can be used for good or evil!

I have the D70s and it does a wonderful job. Many of my friends own the D70 and it takes wonderful pictures also. It depends on the user what you get.

When we went for 10 days back in February, I was highly disappointed with most of the Photopass ohotog's. Don't get me wrong, I met a few that seemed really into their job, but most others didn't seem to give a flip.

Anytime we had a Photopass done, I also handed the photog my D100. After we got back home, we compared the shots off of my D100 vs that of which was on the Photopass website. My pictures we almost always better. I don't think it was due to the camera per-se, but rather the fact that I took the time to make the proper adjustments. Many of the pictures that were on Photopass were totally over exposed and blown out.

I was really disappointed with the Photopass service. Great idea, poor photog's.

Oh, I am so glad you posted this! I have been grumbling for the past week to my husband at how diappointed I was with the photopass pictures. We had a lot taken and I was planning to buy the CD. But when I got home and looked at them on-line I was not very happy. Quite honestly, they stink. Most of them are over-exposed! My own pictures are better and that isn't saying a lot! I got my new D80 (first digital DSLR) two weeks before we went to WDW. So, to say that I am an amateur is quite an understatement. Unfortunately, I only have one picture of our whole family. I was relying on the photopass people for our family pictures since I had heard really positive things about them. And now I am trying to decide if I want to pay $100 for bad pictures just to have some of our whole family.
