Came home to... *update*-Post 9

op-just want to suggest looking into direct tv's insurance coverage. we have 4 receivers and the dish to cover but it's still no more than a few bucks a month. they will come out and fix stuff for free (no deductable or service call charge) which is realy worth it where we live (middle of nowhere-any kind of service provider charges us minimum $50 just to show up).

we just had them out yesterday because of problems with the signal-ended up being the wind shook the dish so loose it wonked out some of the wiring, then we found out that the way dd re-arranged her room suffocated her entire dvr (do not put a dvr on top of a carpeted floor and then set your dvd player on top of it). both were covered at no charge.

now i'm playing catch up with the shows that did'nt record last week so i can watch this week's episodes.

The worst thing we've ever woken up to is our christmas lights being trashed. The people who did it have never been caught. Also had a bunch of teens going around sledgehammering mailboxes recently. Were even caught but police supposedly cannot do anything.

OP - that's great that your DH got your dish working!

As for our pets...we only had 2 cats and one dog back then (2003) and we had left food and water out for them (we have one of those water "fountain" type things, so I believe they at least had water the whole time, but I'm not sure about food. There was food out when we got home, but that could have been done when the papers were brought in. I'm sure she didn't count on the family grapevine ratting her out). Yes, we were furious. No, we didn't pay her -not one dime. She never asked for money, and she's lucky she didn't...

They didn't suffer any noticable effects, and we HOPE they had food the whole time, but they were VERY glad to see us.

Since then, we have found a wonderful sitter who takes very good care of our pets and home, and even takes our Poodle to stay with her at her house, because he's very unhappy if he's alone. He's in my lap right now. :goodvibes He sleeps with my DD at night, and my sitter lets hiim sleep in her bed when we're gone. She's a friend from church, not just some random person from the yellow pages. Boarding would be too expensive since we now have 4 dogs and 4 cats, plus the lizard, fish, and chinchilla could not be boarded anywhere around here, so someone would still need to come look after them. So we're happy with our current arrangement. :goodvibes

As for the papers, you will laugh, but yes, we read them when we get back! :rotfl2: We follow several comic strips and we will go through all the papers, put the comics in order, and read one or two extra every day with breakfast. It's fun to get to read more than one strip at a time. It's like recording a show and not having to wait a week for the next ep. LOL. The actual "news" part, is of course, outdated, but only the state and national parts. The local news, we do still enjoy reading a week later. It's not anything we could read online. (birthday/engagement announcements, stuff like that).

I'm shocked to read so many accounts of vandalism! Cars set on fire, tires slashed...my goodness! What is wrong with people?!

The only thing we have had happen in our yard TP'd while we were in Mexico for Christmas. One of DD's friends was checking on the car every day and saw the mess when she stopped by. Thanfully she cleaned up the yard for us. :) I didn't pay her a little extra for that because she didn't have to do it.

Luckily this never happened to us but some kids broke into someone's house while they were on vacation and totally trashed the place. They were caught and it turned out that one of the culprits was a "friend" of one of the family's kids so he knew that they were gone.

We also had a rash of car windows being broken out for fun. And the scariest was the giant jars of sauce being thrown through people's windows. Some teens' ideas of having fun.

OP, I'm glad to hear that your husband got your Dish working - what a handy fellow! :thumbsup2

When I was in high school, my car got egged. But not just eggs thrown at the car, no - eggs stuffed into the gas tank as well. My parents were NOT happy. The whole car had to be cleaned out on the insides - yuck!! They never caught who did it - we called the police and filed a report but nothing. I was a good kid in schoo, well-liked and all, so we kinda figured they thought it was someone else's car (that make and model was VERY popular when I was in school). But someone could have had a secret hate for me and I didn't know it. :confused3

Oh, so glad your dh could fix your dish!

I am too lazy to type my "theft of decorations saga" suffice it to say, it stunk!
