Camcorder question.

Do we have to worry about our camcorder going through the x-ray screening at the airport ? Will it damage the mini-dv cassettes? Thanks in advance.

It's not like film. The x-rays won't harm digital media or the camera itself.

At the airport security checkpoint, be prepared to remove the camcorder from its bag, just like a laptop computer.

Be sure to take the camcorder in your carry-on. Checked luggage gets tossed around, and it's good advice not to pack anything valuable in your checked luggage.

on my last flight i had to put my camcorder, camera and laptop in seperate bins. in the other bin i put my carry on bag with the extra memory cards and there were not any problems with anything.i did have the same fear as you do but i was wrong

My husband returned from a business trip to Finland and while he was there he was given a VHS tape with training information. He tried to view it saturday and it was blank, it was in his carry on and it had to go thru several xray machines. I would'nt take a chance, can't they hand check it? We've done this numerous times with our 35 mm camera!!

Finland uses a video standard called PAL. In the US, we use a video standard called NTSC. The two systems are not compatible. PAL tapes cannot be viewed on typical VCRs and televisions in the US.

My laptop computer, my camcorder, my digital camera, and some of our VHS tapes have gone through airport x-ray machines many times. No problems.

I'm inclined to think this is the cause. I went this past September to WDW, I put my Cannon digital Video camcorder (records on mini-DV) and Sony Cybershot digital camera, memory cards and all the recorded tapes through the scanner at the airport going and coming and everything was working perfectly when I got home. I believe there are companies which can help you convert a PAL tape to one you can view on your american VCR. Try the yellow pages for Videographers, etc.
